i thought i had this all figured out but i guess not. so im just going to ask
Im trying to get a ambient occlusion pass with a scene lit by hdri .

Right now i am using the occlusion shader and setting it to sample the environment. However i have been informed im going about it wrong

Is fg my only option and if so why don't people just use a standard material

AO with Environement sampling is the way to go when you want simulate FG effect for cheaper cost.

I dunno why this guys said you were but I guess he don't really unsderstand what AO is. ( and it s not just a contact shadows pass )
