Hello all,

I'm mostly a 3d artist but now that I've spent a week or two messing around in painter I'm really starting to like this way of creating images. Most of these started with me having more or less no idea where i was going:

quick 20 min sketch of the female form, some hit and some miss here i think

hour or so craziness:

dont know quite what i was trying to get across here, just a sense of a few figures:

RhysyngSun,

Welcome. :) Nice to see your foray into digital painting. I have just posted this Sticky Thread as I think that nearly everyone who is beginning to paint digitally should try the skull painting exercise linked from this thread:

New Anatomy Forum member Mychael has just completed the same exercise and I think his improvement is quite compellling:

Doing an exercise such as painting a skull in grayscale at first is a great way in which to not only help you familiarize yourself with new digital painting tools but also to practice your observational and shading ability.

I will be honest with you - working traditionally in 2D is best for a primarily 3D artist looking to use 2D to enhance their perception abilities. It's up to you, but I recommend trying both 2D traditional and digital media. In terms of traditional media, I recommend just an normal 2B sketching pencil or ballpoint pen on sketchbook paper.

If you choose to do this exercise, I look forward to seeing your results! :)

Cheers,

-Rebeccak

Thanks Rebecca!

I have had experience with traditional media such as figure drawing with charcoal, pencil, conte crayon, and ink. It was a required course here at my school as they believe (rightly) that we cant be expected to do 3d well if we arent familiar with the shapes of the human body. I'm gonna give that skull exerxise a go regardless since i know i probably need the practice :D.

RhysyngSun,

You might wish to post a few of your best examples of your traditional work here - it would give me and others a better sense of where you are coming from in terms of your training and experience. :)

Cheers,

RhysyngSun,

Ah, good timing! Thank you for posting your traditional pieces, that gives me a better understanding of your approach.

I would very much encourage you to do Master Studies in traditional pencil. Here is a great place to start:

Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031&page=1&pp=35)

Soon we will also be starting on the 2nd installment of the above Workshop series, where we will be drawing / painting the torso. I highly recommend you participate in the Workshop if you can, using traditional medium. :)

I recommend subscribing here if you have not already to be notified of when new Tutorials and Workshops begin here on the Anatomy Forum:

Sorry its been a couple weeks, but I'm finally through my initial semester burnout after being overloaded with assignments and generally not knowing what to do with myself.

I starting working on this tonight and I really want to push it through to a finished piece. What I can see that i have to fix as far as proportions is the right leg (her left), also her arms, especially her left one as it is substantially shorter than it should be.

Once I get through getting her proportions right I'll be read to move on to adding muscle detail. :)

I've been working off of Riven Phoenix's videos(http://the-structure-of-man.blogspot.com/).

Probably the best head I've done from scratch!
