How does such an awful movie make so much?
Although, I'm probably going to buy the dvd to see Davey again. This way I can at least skip thru all the crap and get right to the awesome vfx work.

The other day we were looking at films to watch on cinema, there really isint anything good, so we just end up watching crappy stuff

But adjusted for inflation, it's still not even in the top 40 all-time (at least for US sales):

Sitting at #45 currently.

Not sure what you're on about with the sour grapes comment - personally I thought it was a great movie.
I'm merely pointing out that comparing grosses without adjusting for inflation is somewhat misleading. Hardly controversial, I think?

a valid point brought up my martinw. I hadnt even considered taking inflation into perspective. makes sense though. Its like comparing an economies GDP over years without adjusting for inflation ( and making it real ). im suprised that these box office websites dont already make the adjustment. It is actually quite misleading as mentioned.

I'd like to see a site list these movies in terms of "tickets sold". That would be a good measure of how interested people were in it.
Maybe not interesting to the people who are just in it for the money, though.

Here ya go:

Then you have to adjust for population too to gauge interest. One interesting statistic is that on average everybody in the US went to see Gone With the Wind more than once. (1940 population 130m, ticket sales 200m)
I didn't like it. I was watching my watch all the time and nearly cried when I saw Cpt. Barbossa again at the end. I thought there will be one more hour to be watched. :S
I really liked the first one, but not the second. The VFX was amazing but the movie... it was boring, at least for me. Anyway... I'll watch the third one of course.;) - mainly because the VFX -

I would argue that looking at the "adjusted for inflation" numbers is somewhat misleading as well, seeing as how home entertainment didn't really exist until VHS, and didn't really affect the industry until DVD. I'm sure if there would've been a Gone with the Wind DVD back in 1939, then it wouldn't have been re released theatrically in 1947, 1954, 1961, 1967, 1971, and 1989, all of which count towards the inflated gross.
I find it impressive that these films hit the big money marks so quickly. Pirates has done in 10 weeks what took Titanic six months to accomplish. The DVD will already be out 6 months after Pirates orignal release.

Box Office Mojo is listing Dead Man's Chest unadjusted gross at 416,000,000, a far cry from one billion. It needs to be updated.

416 million are us domestic only, and the 587 million left come from overseas. ;)
