Gisaiagami, thanks a bunch! i will ;)

A lot of the faces are skewed. You should turn the paper away and hold it up to the light, the mistakes will be more apparently and you will be able to fix them earlier in the sketching phase. The style looks nice, but the skewedness of it is murderous.

jpedro
09-27-2006, 01:00 PM
hey eishiya, thanks for your comments. you're right, the flipping and turning of the canvas is a good technique for sure. i use it often on longer illustrations.
in the case of the drawings i've shown so far,one could argue that the face of the lil lady with the sticks in her hair could/should be more symmetrical. however, in a real quick sketch like that, i think it's good to just let it flow for 2 minutes ;)

but again, thanks for checking by, i'll be careful :)

thanks for stopping by Bryst. been to your blog quickly, is there anything in particular i should see? i saw you went to angoulème. great town, been there once for the comic festival, it was amazing because i saw one of my heroes, Massimiliano Frezzato, draw live.

right, for tonight, a little painting exercise. spent 50 minutes on it, all in Photoshop. started out with a blue canvas with nothing particular on my mind :) hope you like.

i look forward to another life drawing session tomorrow night, it's always on tuesday night, wish it was more often than just once a week.
unfortunately, there is not that much feedback given there(i suppose i should be asking more too...*scratches his head*), but hey, there is a model and it's great exercise.

if anyone from Regensburg happens to see this and is also looking for a place to go to life drawing once a week, drop in at the Andreasstrasse 28 in the Künstlerhaus, it's from 19.00-22.00, 10Euros, which isn't bad i think.

comments are very welcome, thanks for stopping by folks!

respectfully,

Cris and Keleandra, thank you both for stopping by and taking the time to comment. i appreciate it.

@Keleandra, i drew that directly in Photoshop CS2, some texture brushes a simple hard round brush and then i also used an unsharp mask in the end.

okay, time for some more drawings in this ole thread:

some more life drawing sketches, a quick gesture sketch to begin with:

A really nice set of sketches, Jan. I saw your entries in both the Hellboy and Zombie threads. Really cool!

You really show a sensitivity for the human figure in your life drawings. I really love those.

11-03-2006, 06:15 PM
thanks so much for the kind words Cris.

great motivation to hear that from you, i just looked through your own sketchbook thread again, and also looked at your own site. great work (great head studies and the childrens book illustrations are awesome), and reading what projects you have been invovled in is just really cool! Giraud for example was such a big influence on me as a kid, i loved the Blueberry comics.

i really enjoy the DSG sections, i'm glad you liked my entries.

hey Cris, thanks! i'll try and do that for you, although i will have lots to do with work and a small illustration job next to it. still, the DSG stuff is great fun, so i'm hoping to squeeze a couple of minutes out for that. i'm keeping an eye open for your monsters too! good stuff, loved the eyes!

more:

and these last two are DSG doodles i recently contributed. i think the black rose lady is sth. that i will invest some time into, mainly because i feel i really need to practise painting fabrics, and the dress she is wearing presents a good opportunity for that. comments and crits most welcome, thanks for checking in,

Daniel, thanks for stopping by. i go to this life drawing class whenever time permits. unfortunately, it's only once a week on a tuesday night, and tere's no real teaching there, which is a bummer. but it still helps tremendously and i really enjoy it.

Vahn, thanks to you too. i liked the last creature sketches in your thread, and the "chicken thing" cracked me up ;)

Maladie
02-19-2007, 10:42 PM
Hey Jan, first of all your sketches are awesome, nice flow and linework. I've just browsed your thread and I particularly like the lifedrawing ones.

For a crit I think you should practice women's faces (life or photo ref). I've noticed they have two looks: the sexy dumb elvish look, with the eyes very tilted and far apart, tiny nose and triangular face, or the mean, menacing look with squinted eyes beneath an exaggerated brow. Both okay, but I find that your careful body sketches show much more depth and love for the subject. I think for example the black rose would tremendously improve with a less crudely comic-style face.

Anyway you got the skills down, just describing the emotional effect those faces have on me (sounds more serious than I mean:)). Keep drawing man!

jpedro
02-19-2007, 11:12 PM
heya maladie,

first off, really cool you took the time to browse through my humble little thread, and also for giving a crit. i have really strong comic-style influences though, therefore i don't think i will ever go the completely realistic route (except for practicing, which you're right, i need to, i'll always have to...;) )
i probably won't change the black rose (style wise )much though, since i am quite happy with that one concerning her face and expression. as far as realism goes in the black rose pic, i think i will want textures and costume to be very detailed and somewhat realistic, but not necessarily her facial features.
heck, i'm just hoping to finish the damn thing at some point;) as far as expressions and my ladies faces go in general, i've got more going to be sure, it just so happens that i like that lifted eyebrow-thing a lot, as well as tilted eyes....so yeah, got me :)

best,
Jan

Maladie
02-19-2007, 11:44 PM
Hehe, gotcha!:) Hey, I didn't mean your faces should be realistic! That totally wouldn't suit your style. I'm just saying the faces make your females a bit one-dimensional as characters. If you want that: great!
I should be picky about it, since my profession is writing. So maybe I do fuss too much about 'characters'. If so, just ignore me:). Looking forward to more material!

jpedro
02-20-2007, 10:21 AM
maladie, no worries at all. it's great to get some feedback, i shall keep in mind what you said. i totally agree that "character", emotion, expression, gesture and all these things are important, both in a face and in the stance and pose of a character.

btw., what are you writing?

okay folks,
i finally got around to work a little bit on the black rose picture. doing some coloring on the costume, i'll keep this red and black for her i think. still not too sure what to do with the BG. i'll also work on the thorns some more, maybe add some leaves and branches.

http://jpedro.250free.com/wips/black-rose6.jpg

let me know what you think.

i have been doing some drawing exercises for the last week every time i got home after work. i split up the session into 10 minutes of 30 second drawings, five minutes of 2minute drawings and two 5minute drawings to end the session.

mostly i used reference pics that i played in a slide show in adobe bridge with the images cycling at the respective speed. i think it is quite a good exercise to get poses down a little quicker. i want to be able to get the gist of the poses down faster, and look at the whole thing more and not get excited about some detail too soon, which i hope this will help me with.

here is a scan of some 30 sec sketches:

your pencil /pen work is really good. shame about the shading, to be honest. i think it needs to be cleaner to justify the quality of your original art.

look at this guy for a style that would suit your line art -

http://pacman23.gutterspaced.com

see how it is much cleaner? if i hadnt seen your colour images i would have guessed you would have gone for a cleaner, stronger painting style...

HOWEVER - YOUR LINE ART IS INSPIRATIONAL - better than me! haha

highside,

thanks for your opinion. i also checked out the link, shame most images are so small. i do like that clean reduced coloring style a lot actually. it all looks very confident.

for myself, it's something i definitely want to try in some illustrations later on.

shading...coloring, dAng! yup, gotta work on that stuff ;)

thanks for dropping by and glad i could be of some inspiration.

 Love the work on the pencil sketches. You breath life into the faces expressions and anatomy.
Maybe you should concentrate on how to keep that in the colored versions. They are pretty good but it seems that you lost something between the sketch and the final work. Know What I'm talking about because It happens to me to, sometimes.

Anyway, It's a great thread, keep posting, already subscribed.

Welldone,
The face is strong and the hands and feet are the best parts.
Why don't you meke some shadows on the ground just to give it more gravity, his shape is so massive and the rest pose needs some shadow to render his weight.

Anyway, this is very good.

Jan,

Glad to see some study! Your "from lifers" are showing a lot of promise. Watch your contrast in values. I feel you can push the spectrum further by making the darks as dark as possible, and lighting up those grey highlights. Sometimes, it helps to nail the spectrum down by focusing on an area of the model where the transition from light to dark is as short as possible. Then place your other values off that point of reference!

Watch the balance of your characters. I recommend drawing the weight supports right after the ground plane. ie: legs, or chair shaft etc etc. In parellel, study of the mechanics of the body, ie bone/muscle would help bring out a deeper understanding of these complicated machines ;)

Post more!

Hey, I'm just getting into CG work myself, I been a fan of it for awhile now. But I will have my first tablet this week if all goes well, I did my research ect.. So I'm not ending up with a bamboo or grafire, no worries. But you is there anything you would have liked to know at the begining, that you could hook me up with ? Like, brushs and custom things like that, some info about them, that a noob wouldn't know. little tricks and stuff, you know.. I draw plenty, but CG and Tablets is another world. I'm not new to PS, but if you have anything, these ears are listening. Cintiq 10dw the little one xD

Thanks, Cheers

I always follow this thread and I can't see enough of it. Great work and looking forward to see more!
The pic in #123 is a sweet character! And one question: Are you going to work on #125 - it holds a lot of potential to a very nice piece - I really would like to see this completeley done :)

at AmDiv: I'm a beginner, too. So I suggest you use the "search engine" of CGS - you'll find a lot about tutorials, brush settings and even custombrushes to download - it depends on which software you are going to use. I bought PAINTER and I'm very satisfied with it but still for a lot of things you should have PS as well. So for those two main programs for 2D Illustration - you'll find a lot of stuff here...

jpedro
01-20-2008, 06:03 PM
thanks for dropping by guys!

@AmDiv: thanks for your comments;)

about your question, i can sign what VISEone said. many of my custom brushes are from the net or from the Photoshop presets. many of them are good to go as they are, but just play with the brush settings a little bit to make you own variations or even totally new ones. shape dynamics and other dynamics are very important settings because of the pen pressure controls, but scattering and texture are also great to achieve texturing or add some randomness to the brush strokes.

the brushes i use most though are a simple hard round brush with only other dynamics turned on(control: pen pressure turned on) and another hard round brush with both other dynamics and shape dynamics turned on (control: pen pressure turned on for both). the latter i basically use as a pencil, and the first is for laying in colors and rendering.

in both cases, i use shortcuts to influence the hardness of the brush as i need it and i also change brush size on the fly via keyboard shortcuts. keys 1-0 to change opacity, for example when you need to blend between two colors.

i put the increase and decrease brush size on "a" and "y"(it's a swiss keyboard in case you wonder why the "y" is there...), "q" and "><\" increase and decrease hardness of the brush. "x" for changing between back and foreground colors, "e" for the eraser tool, "b" Brush Tool and i put the pencil tool on "n".
as illustrated here, i recommend putting the most commonly used keys all in proximity to one another, so you can comfortably reach it with your "non-tablet" hand and press them while you draw/paint with the other:

http://jpedro.250free.com/wips/keyboard-shortcuts.jpg

i think a good starting point are definitely very basic brushes like the ones i mentioned, and just paint a little with them while changing the hardness of the brush.

@VISEone: thanks! 125 is far from finished and i definitely want to push this one further.

AmDiv
01-20-2008, 09:35 PM
I am excited to see 125 pushed, I like his left leg, nailed it pretty good.

Thanks for the input from both yea, I plan to muck around with the basic things for awhile to get the feel of it, I have only used a few rental Intuos's from school, with CS2. I will be using Photoshop for the most part, but am curious to the perk of having Painter aswell.. I am sure there are differences, but am thinking it would be like having CS2 and CS3 installed...

btw, I cant get enough of that swiss keyboard.. I never really put much thought into Europe having different boards.. Funny...

@ picture 125, the victim under the main character. Is he going to show abit more of the barbarians wrath ? A nice Gash or something of the sort ? I just figured he looks pretty intense, maybe you can see it in the things around him too, not just his face / pose ? You should bust out some billiard effect, with the things around him. frame the rage in corpses and allies. I bet you already thought of this, and are getting to it, but none the less. Lets see more! =P Just jokes, no pressure..

GL, thanks again.

Cheers.
Am

jpedro
01-23-2008, 02:25 AM
AmDiv, thanks for your input on 125. you're right about his intensity, i'll keep that in mind since i do want other things in general to feed off that more. i for example am also thinking of showing it more on the other characters. i think the tension of the girl needs to be different once i get to it, and the guy crouching looks kinda way too relaxed as well, even at this rough stage...

about the keyboards...hehe, i thought so. i currently live and work in germany, and it even differs from theirs too ;)

anyways, here's sth. for today, a DSG topic. pencils and then CS2:

thoughts and comments appreciated, i hope you like it so far;)

Great work Jpedro. :) Your sketching skills are really amazing!

On the previous page you asked for suggestions and thoughts and such. You may experiment by using the murky background color behind the giant as a cool halftone on the girl. Lightly in areas where the form recedes from the light, such as the thighs, arms, neck, etc. Even in the hair. It would just harmonize things a little more.

Rabid1
02-05-2008, 05:41 PM
Very nice work J, i just voted for your White Owl piece as SOTW on the DSG. I too am amazed at your sketching, and ability to transfer the heart of those sketches into the colored versions. And such a remarkable ability to draw the female figure, do you ever use references, or just do a ton of life drawing?

jpedro
02-06-2008, 12:25 AM
@Daniel, thanks man!

about your suggestions, i will definitely try and do that. as mentioned, i am kindof also a little up in the air in terms of adding some content into the image...right now i am still unsure where to go with it in terms of that. one thing i had in mind was adding a few more really small pets that are sitting on the arm or shoulders, to have a little more going on..i dont want to ruin the "tension" between the two though....

@Rabid1: DSG-> i appreciate it, thanks a lot!
hearing you say you like the translation from pencil to colors is especially sweet for me to hear, since i felt that this was definitely sth. that i wanted to work on.

i do use reference sometimes, i think it is great for practise. life drawing is really helpful too, just to see sth. in 3d and translating it into 2d(didnt make it tonight again...arrrgghh:) ), but i love doodling and sketching from the mind. all three are really important i guess and are connected. the more of each, the better!

This one is looking good so far, really nice color choices. One suggestion would be to give her right hand a bit more contrast or detail. Right now it gets sort of lost in the brightness of the background and causes her overall balance to seem off. This is going to be another great piece though, good job.

Some really amazing work you have, just went through your whole thread and the amount of style you can get through your forms has just inspired me to start practising anatomy! One question on the digital painting though, do you paint most your work in grayscale and then colour it or straight to the colour palette?

keep up the posts

You have an interesting style.
I really like the use of colors in that wolverine. There's also a girl you posted before, kind of asian with a big hairdo, in that one I liked how you did her hair with the purple highlights, it went really well with the red in the rest of the picture.

jpedro
04-18-2008, 02:09 AM
hi trent,

i go to straight to color sometimes, but it is definitely easier to go from a grayscale image to a colored version, beacause you only have to worry about value in a grayscale image.

glad i could inspire you, thanks for dropping me a line.

Strife, it took about 45 minutes i guess and i did it cuz i saw some cool techniques that Koshime is using which i wanted to try. a lot of re-using of the same shapes, flipping and transforming them. just more of an exercise really.

ocarian amd michael-olszak, thank you both for the kind words:)

been feeling quite wasted after work recently, but i managed to get a few exploratory sketches done for a pinup topic (got carried away on the girl withthe bat...), for which i am hoping to fisnish sth.

I really like the last two sets of b/w girl sketches. They seem cleaner and more well drawn than previous I've seen from you.

I think you should balance your style, I think sometimes you go to far with it and that hurts your quality, to be honest, looking at these I think how could you make other images that lack this quality. Specially when going into color it seems your style is too loose, things seem almost out of place. I think you should hold back a little and not get carried away. Sometimes your sketching style doesn't match your coloring technique.

Your style is great but I'd suggest when coloring doing it more like Aly Fell (look him in the portfolio area of this page), his painting technique is very clean and tight. Something like that would improve your images a lot, and you'd still have your own style.

I'm saying this cause I think you can pull it off.

Also, be careful with proportions.

Many people will flatter you cause you draw pretty women and funny images. But when I give a critique I try to give input that will help someone become a better artist. I really hope this help.

The girl with the flag looks amazing... it makes me want to color it. :)

jpedro
06-13-2008, 06:55 AM
hey ariel,

it's a bit hard to understand what you mean by balancing my style, but heck, painting like Aly...he's one of my favourite artists for sure ;) , so obviously i know his work, and achieving a similar level is certainly a goal.

there's hardly any finished stuff in this thread, specially when it comes to coloring, and you're probably right that the sketched work often is still a notch above the colors, but i think the few more worked out pieces have a fitting style of coloring and palette, e.g. the amaterasu piece or the aboriginee huntress in my portfolio.

about you wanting to color the girl with the flag, go ahead! appreciate you stopping by, greetings to mexico.

This is amazing I really like it, you should post the step on how you did this... if you can please do :)

jpedro
06-15-2008, 01:13 PM
ariel, thank you.
unfortunately i havent kept early versions of this. i did it without any particular idea in mind, from imagination and just started with rather broad blobs, the only thing i kept in mind from the beginnning was to be aware of atmospheric perspective, and to try and define foreground middle ground and background by making things in the front dark, and less saturated in the BG.

some copy and transforming techniques were also used, actually, the branches in the middle of the pic look it, which bothers me now that i came back to this image a day later, but i think i'll just leave it....for now.

i haven't used any screen capturing tools yet to record the progress in a movie(any recommendations?), but here's a small gif of another one i made last night:

Ataulfo and exStatic1, thanks guys, good to hear that a gif is helpful as well.

arielmedel, the green jungle scene, i think i was done with that one at around 1,5h. been experimenting with some brushes in between, and since i don't do these so often, i'm quite happy with the result in that time.

i bought a book on Mucha this week, and the guy is just so inspiring...here's a piece i did this week end after having looked at some of his amazing stuff. a little art deco touch:) :

Hi, Jan.

You are a nice artist and has special talent to draw human body.

All your work is nice, but for me your more important work is about your sketches and pencil drawings. Your sketch style gives an almost perfect representation of intuitive idea common people has about trace, stroke, noise, chaotic filling, shadows and beyond.

I'm a Computer Graphics researcher and one of my main areas is about creating digital effects to imitate art made by human hands. Looking at your strokes I can get a lot of intuitive information, and I always try to transform this information in math models in some way.

I hope you keep giving us the chance to see your sketches.

Congratulations for your talent.

love your CHOW work (what am i saying...i love your work, period;) ).

hopefully i'll end up with a good illustration for the bloodmonk topic. it amazes me how you manage to go from a sketch with so few lines that say SO much all the way to a fully rendered image, without losing a beat it seems...sheesh...one day when i'm big...;)

redfrog, same to you my friend, you're doing great, the latest ink work is really strong! hope to see you back in here.

i was well chuffed that my 'Song of Friendship' piece from my gallery won Image of the Day yesterday, over at ImagineFX. i love howling wolves:)

okay, for tonight, just two quick sketches that i may (or may not) paint later on, the girl is intended for a DSG topic and the guy would get a lot of tattoos running from the belly all the way to his outstretched arm, because the topic would be...tattoos:) over at pixelbrush.

here it goes:
