i don't always find it easy to work on my laptop on the train with my little wacom, but during this week ends' trip back from switzerland, i actually managed to find a more or less comfy working position, and with the help of some good ole "disturbed"(the indestructible album is wicked!), managed to blend out my surroundings and worked on the grayscales for this one...still quite a lot of work to do, but here's a wip, hope you like:

09-01-2008, 09:17 AM
Nice jpedro that looks very promising. Nice scenery, and the values are well placed. Maybe you should putt in a stronger shadow for the girl. I'm looking forward to the colored version.

09-01-2008, 12:11 PM
hey Roman, swiss guy living in germany...i know about that:)
nice to see you in here. agree about the shadow, i am giddy about coloring it as well, but first i have to get the overall values right. still many areas that need work.

09-02-2008, 07:47 AM
colored mr. "this is sparta" last night.

hope you like:)

09-03-2008, 10:51 PM
a doodle from last night in my sketchbook, and a sketch for yet another CHOW.

09-04-2008, 06:06 AM
Just amazing stuff as usual man!
Keep 'em comin'!

09-06-2008, 09:00 AM
damn man. amazing sketchbook. do you have one at CA as well?

09-14-2008, 10:19 PM
NR43, thanks buddy, appreciate the encouragement.

michael, thanks so much man. about the CA sketchbook, i don't, no. i was thinking of having one over there as well for a long time(still am in fact...), even at the time when i opened up this one here.

i love CA, but back then at the particular time when i decided to have a thread, it took me ages to view threads on there, at least it seemed so. i think it's much better now again, since i am looking through a lot of the sketchbooks there frequently, without having to wait forever. love the place, but i'm glad you found your way here :)

i'm without my pc atm, so it's back to laptop for now, hopefully i'll get it back soon, i fear my mainboard went up in smokes...for tonight, i did this for a topic on pixelbrush:

09-17-2008, 06:44 PM

coloring wip of above pencils:

hope u like...hope to finish this one this week end the latest.

09-23-2008, 02:49 AM
Jpedro! Your stuff just keeps getting better every time i come back to it!
The sketchbook stuff is awesome! Would love to see even more of that!

great work as always, and always getting even better! :)

09-30-2008, 05:08 PM
Jan, did you ever finish your CHOW entry? I didn't see it over at CA? It seems like they are really strict about the rules on that, i'm sure yours would have done well. Nice SB additions too.

10-02-2008, 08:14 PM
redfrog, thanks, always gives me a boost :)
the following posts are all SB work, and almost everything plain 2B pencils...some have minor digital paintover or cleanups going. nothing special, just practice and fun.

Rabid, i take it you mean the CHOW with the alien and the girl playing cards...unfortunately, i have not yet, but i will, i must finish those CHOWS. i had to send my GFX card in this tuesday though, since i could not get it fixed....still have my laptop, but i used the time to do some sketching at least ;) appreciate your comments!

here come the sketches:

10-02-2008, 08:14 PM

10-02-2008, 08:19 PM

from life...

10-02-2008, 08:21 PM
and more from life drawing last tuesday night:

thanks for checking!

10-09-2008, 04:37 PM
another small life drawing update, these poses are all fairly quick, 5 minutes to 10 max.

10-10-2008, 04:56 PM
a quick painter and CS2 overpaint of the last one after work:

10-15-2008, 09:24 AM
here's a wip of the girl pilot and her co-pilot:

hope you like where this is going...
thanks for watching folks :)

10-15-2008, 04:43 PM
I just can't believe you are not getting more response with all these amazing works!

Really digging those life sketches Jan
The last painting looks nice. It's obviously just a WIP so my only comment is "keep going" heh

10-16-2008, 01:25 AM
Amazing style you have!

I enjoyed your pencil drawings, such a clean and full of life line!
And your painted works are simply great! From the choice of colours until the style...really cool!!

10-23-2008, 12:44 AM
alice! grazie, grazie! thanks for the kind words, pencils will always be my first love i think :)
glad you like 'em. maybe i can respond in more italian next time, i am taking beginner classes atm..hehe. thanks for stopping by!

NR43, thanks man, glad you appreciate some of the work in here :) i'll keep going on the painting, but some more pencils first: these first faces are from ref(facial expressions, by mark simon), second portrait is from life and the last one is very loosely based on a ref from the same book.

10-23-2008, 12:46 AM
and then some doodles from imagination(second is a sketch for a topic on pixelbrush:death):

10-23-2008, 11:18 AM
Oh!! Really really nice foreshortening on the girl's sketch!
And your line...I love it!!!

Good luck with your italian lessons, maybe soon we will be able to chat! :p

10-25-2008, 12:02 AM
Always great to check out your thread update, Jpedro!
The girl and her co-pilot piece is coming along a treat!
Fantastic work!

11-02-2008, 01:03 AM
thanks for the kind words alice. a conversation in italian...wow...i've learned "ciao, mi chiamo Jan" so far...hehe. anyways, thanks for stopping by again ;)

redfrog, thanks a lot man, always appreciate you stopping by.

here is some Painter work on the previous "death"topic pencils,
and the second is a quick digital sketch(CS2 for that one) for another event on Pixelbrush....will need to hurry on that one.

11-05-2008, 11:52 PM
worked a little more on the last sketch:

11-06-2008, 07:30 AM
You make it look so simple again ^^

Love the color scheme... tranquile mood, yet... for how long?

11-06-2008, 01:44 PM
Hey Jan, nice updates bro. I like the progression on this last one, its cool to see how you built up the color palettes for both the character and the background. Those spooky owl eyes again!! Just one small critique for you, that girl seems a little off balance, right from the first sketch. She seems just slightly titled to the right (her left), maybe she is in stride i dunno? Anyway, good updates. You still coming up with CA concepts?

11-06-2008, 02:37 PM
very nice forms and colors! Good work.

11-06-2008, 04:05 PM
guys, thanks again for having a look in here and your comments.

Rabid, you are right about the ballance thing, i did adjust it a little, but it's still a bit off. i' going to fix that.

about the owl, here's another problem obviously, cuz i just drew a spooky catface and then compostionally found that it best fits quite scaled up there, behind the figure. similar to that owl pic, (maybe looking at both of them too similar actually....but i still think i'm just going to ride with this, )

with so little left of the cat except its eyes, it seems to not read as cat, or cat eyes....i havent looked at reference for this pic at all, so i think i will do that before i repaint them.

back with more soon i hope, until then, take care folks and cheers to ya!

11-06-2008, 08:00 PM
Ha ha, sorry man, i didn't even realize the 'cat' part, but now looking again yes it does appear to be a cat (although similar to the owl). I think compositionally the placement of the cat face is good, it sort of reads as an animal spirit and does create strong directional cues. Since eyes are probably the strongest focal area of a character, having a large set above the girl is a strong focus point. So this is the Cat Lady then? Very spooky and cool looking foward to more!

11-06-2008, 09:31 PM
no worries man, and you werent the only one who seems to have seen an owl there. and since i am going to put some more time into this one anyway, it's good to know where to invest some of it.

this will be for an event over at pixelbrush. you can find the topic here (http://www.pixelbrush.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3692) in case you're interested. about the CA concepts, well the girl-pilot with the alien and the scene with the aztec like priests were from CHOWs, i'm trying to finish those first before taking on too many new "bigger" things. except sketchbook fun, that's just a must ;)

here's some more i had done in my SB before i went with the digitals above:

11-11-2008, 09:43 PM
okay folks,
a mini update before i hit the streets of wellington NZ :)

this is the final for this little contest on Pixelbrush:

11-12-2008, 01:48 AM
Stunning job! Good luck with the contest.

12-06-2008, 01:12 PM
RAbid, thanks a lot dude :)

time for a small update:
been scanning in some pencils that i did during my time in Wellington, at the CAworkshop, which was a blast, was a really cool experience and worth the long trip. sme of the sketchbooks i saw there were sick! awesome stuff...

the following is partly straight scans my SB and some of it comped togehter a little bit. mixed from life and imagination...the trip out tho the seals(well, we just saw one, but mission accomplished :) ) was really cool as well, it even waved to us at one point :)

12-08-2008, 12:11 AM
some from ref:

and a doodle from this sunday, pencils then painter and cs2.

12-10-2008, 12:13 AM
some fun stuff for tonight:

thanks for watching folks ;)

12-10-2008, 03:41 AM
Wow, I think I just gagged a little. That's a disgusting looking alien :)

I really dig the guy with the baseball cap, it's very grabbing.

Great work!

12-11-2008, 07:06 PM
First, i agree with Dan, that last chick is Ugg-tastic. Dripping nipple = gag  but she's got a lovable face.

Nice updates man, you've been really pumping these out latley! So you went to one of those CAworkshops? That must have been really cool, who were the main instructors/event hosts? What did you take away from that experience?

12-12-2008, 12:29 AM
daniel and rabid, hehe, thanks guys, if i find some time, i'll design a nice costume for her ;)

the workshop was sweet, for someone not accustomed to long plane trips, it was a real adventure just to go to the other side of the world(i really used to hate flying!), but it was an experience well worth the trip. i'd say i just most enjoyed watching the guys paint, from Noxizmad(definitely one of my favourite artists), to JasonChan, Wes Burt, Whit Brachna, basically the whole Massive Black crew are just crazy talented. was really good to see some original sketchbooks too, with the pencil work in there. it's just really an eye opener to see how much time needs to be devoted, dedication is key, and they all live it. you know, it's not really new stuff, but when you're there and are able to suck up the whole atmosphere, it kindof intensifies everything. and the best thing about it is being active there as well, and of course meeting and chatting with people who are wired the same way.

12-12-2008, 03:33 PM
That sounds really cool and very inspiring! I've seen one of their videos from a previous workshop, and it looked crazy intense...non-stop art action or like 48 hours straight! Man it would be cool to see some of those guys' sketchbooks and line art in person, and of course, watching them paint! Those guys are very passionate about their craft.

01-06-2009, 12:59 PM
time for a mini update with some random stuff, mainly fun and practice, the face in the middle one is from reference, the rest is doodles:

happy new year all!

01-07-2009, 04:34 AM
I really like the last two portraits. The colors are a little less saturated then some of your other stuff, which I happen to like. Plus, the visible brushstrokes are a great touch.

--Oh, and Happy (belated) New Year to you too :)

01-11-2009, 09:54 PM
I don't know if I posted here before, but I love your pencil sketches >:)

01-12-2009, 03:34 PM

01-15-2009, 08:03 AM
Amazing stuff, Jan!
Every time I come back the quality of your work has progressed even more.
Absolutely amazing!
Hope you had a great christmas and new year!
All the best for 09!

01-16-2009, 01:49 AM
Craig, it's always cool to see you in here, thanks for the encouragement and the same to you of course!

for tonight just a little sketch to get my mind off pandora and my steampunk entry:

01-26-2009, 10:45 AM
hi, beautiful pencil sketches, needless to say!
and nice style all over;
and - thanks for sharing your process, enjoyed!

01-26-2009, 01:54 PM
That last one is very cool :) Nice textures and the cool blue shirt really contrasts well with the surrounding warm temperatures.

02-09-2009, 10:10 PM
daniel, thanks a lot. it was a good little warmup, or cooldown :)

alenah, great to see you in here and thanks for the compliments.

it looks like my host is having serious troubles, they've been down for quite a few days now, kindof shuts my whole thread down atm. ....sucks.

02-12-2009, 09:59 PM
geez, okay, my host is still shaky, if it continues like that i might as well think of opening a new thread...anyways, here is a small update on some work, i hope you'll be able to see any images:

wip on the sacrifice picture:

wips on the Faerie image i added to my gallery:

thanks for watching people!

02-12-2009, 10:03 PM
oh yeah...and a small digital pencil sketch to round this one up ;)

02-14-2009, 12:37 PM
small update:
this is a sketch initially done for a small private commission:

02-14-2009, 01:50 PM
You are ****ing awesome man

02-14-2009, 02:40 PM
Lovely comand on stroke you have ...love yur sketches...keep going..

02-16-2009, 12:16 AM
submit127, cheers mate! much appreciated. :D

naresh, welcome, and thanks for the kind words, i will....with a little progress shot of the BabaYaga piece:

02-16-2009, 08:30 AM
Oooh long time since I visited this thread and there are lot more nice pictures too :)

Love the punk girl with the green hair... very expressive.
Also love the new year update with the faces. The bottom one looks better than the middle one of which you say you used reference. Is that something that comes because you are too caught up in the reference? I have that sometimes.

The sacrifice image does not work that good for me... it seems that only the boy and the knife are really though out and the rest was added as an afterthought. Composition could be much stronger there.
Looking forward to the colour on the babajaga piece. I have two hopes, one that you will be using a little more daring colours and two that you will work it out in brows and greens (would be great for ink style) like the swap setting the story has.

But I'll wait and see. Cheers!

02-17-2009, 10:24 AM
matsman, thanks for checking back in. not sure i was too caught up in the ref, it's just a different exercise i guess, and the result wasnt spectacular i agree :)

bout the sacrifice picture, i'm still reasonably confident that i can pull it together if i push this further, but i think i see your concern. and...it's a girl....lol!

here's a step on the baba piece, still a lot to do and directions i can go with this.

02-17-2009, 11:22 AM
How do u do the colouring, human?

02-17-2009, 07:46 PM

02-20-2009, 07:55 PM
submit127, not sure yet...could go with human flesh tones or even something more alien.

NR43, thanks dude, cool you dropped by :)

02-22-2009, 08:05 PM
another portrait:

02-23-2009, 10:35 AM
and a speedy before it's back to work 20mins, CS2:

02-23-2009, 01:55 PM
Ah, nice color on this little composition :) the subtle pink clouds and the pinkish sands are great. Oh, I just notice the figures! I also dig your last portrait, keep posting :)

02-27-2009, 10:45 AM
daniel, thanks a lot :) cool you dicovered some of the small stuff going on ;)

here's another portait. 25 minutes, CS2.

and i started this one for the Dominance War, General Portraits.

ihopeyoulike. thanks for watching :)

03-04-2009, 08:16 PM
guys, i decided that i am going to ask for this thread to be closed. the images that i linked in almost all of the previous pages are on a host that just keeps giving me trouble, and i hate having people take the time stop by and then there's nothing that shows up in here.

i have moved on to a new service that should take care of my hosting issues, so i really hope to see some of you good people who have been kind enough to stop by in my new thread that i am hoping to open up soon.

best to all of you and see ya round ;)

03-04-2009, 09:16 PM
Jan, i understand your issue and i look foward to seeing your new stuff whenever you put up a new thread. Your latest work has been really engaging in both technical execution and the themes presented. This thread has evolved just as you have...into something great.

03-04-2009, 09:34 PM
and i started this one for the Dominance War, General Portraits.

Too bad you didn't have time to finish, great start on that one. Will you have time for the main challenge? Would be fun going to war with one more familiar face. :buttrock:

03-05-2009, 12:37 AM
Rabid, thanks a ton for the words, means a lot to me. it kinda breaks my heart to abandon the thread, but as i said, i hate having all those dead posts, and fixing all the links would be really awful(first the diggin up of the images, then the whole re-uploading, the finding out what images go with which post....and then editing all the posts). i was really down tonight because of that shit, but you made my evening, so thanks :)

and Iz, thanks i appreciate the comments. i agree it would be cool to go to war together :) this whole DW thing is really new to me, so i feel a little shell shocked already.....but with a veteran by my side ;)

03-05-2009, 07:26 AM
and Iz, thanks i appreciate the comments. i agree it would be cool to go to war together :) this whole DW thing is really new to me, so i feel a little shell shocked already.....but with a veteran by my side ;)

Hehe, I've only joined once so far, and I didn't have time to finish. I felt really bad about that since I was really happy with my idea and concept. But this time!
