"The 20Gb debate
The second topic that has been surfacing a lot lately is our support of Blu-ray as a medium. Yes it is true - we are currently using more than 20 gigs. And yes, we do compress our level data. The fact that we store so much on disc is actually not that surprising when you look at the numbers. Consider that even with compression, each of our “levels” (or loaded areas) has more than 300 megs of unique data. And keep in mind that we’re also streaming data during level playthroughs. It doesn't take too much level data before you've gone past what can be stored on a dual-layer DVD. And between single player and multiplayer we have a lot of level data (over 40 different large loaded areas) – yes, more than will fit on a dual layer DVD.
We also include a lot of data in the form of game movies in both HD and PAL formats, high quality audio streams for all supported languages and some of those Insomniac “extras” that our fans have come to expect.
I realize that some people will still be skeptical unless we provide an actual layout of the disc. But for now I wanted to give you some better info. "

It will be funny hearing the "DVD is enough for x years into the future, Blu-Ray serves no purpose for games" type of people now.

yeah blue ray rocks! there's absolutely no down-sides to whole-heartedly accepting this minor transition storage technology! go sony go!

DING DING DING! we have a winner. HD movies at 720 and/or 1080 can easily be over a gig for one movie. add on "high quality audio streams for all supported languages" will also add some data to the disk.

only 1gig for 1 hd movie?isnt a normal dvd something like 2 gigs?
edit:nm,i see your talking about the in-game fmv's and not full length films.

Or you can pick up your calculator and type in 40*300 and see the results for yourself, movies or not. So remove the videos (why? videos are fun) and you still don't have enough...
we were having a debate about this at work the other day. I think a dvd might be fine in most cases. Look at oblivion that game is huge and it fit on a dvd. But I would not expect to see many fmv games like final fantasy on the 360, the hd content would take up to much space.

From what we're hearing about the BluRay/HDVD players currently, it would appear to me that the PS3 load times could end up being worse than the PSP, at least the first time its run.
It would surprise me the least if most PS3 games are going to cache their content onto the hard drive for faster load times. If this turns out to be true, I'd hate to be stuck with the smaller (20GB) drive.
There's a difference between huge and huge imo.
World of Warcraft is decent in size too, one problem, it looks the same at 50% of the areas. There's like one tower model and 3-5 cave models. This is extremely noticable and makes the game feel cheap, if bigger size lets dev make custom areas with unique models and textures then I'm all for it :)

not to mention the wear and tear to the hard drive.. I would be you would see a greater chance of a drive failing on the PS3 with its heavy use of the hard drive for caching. Especially if they use a laptop hard drive. If its not the drive failing, it would definitely cause a higher chance of data loss. Are they going to have a way to defrag the drive.. or is sony going to even consider that?...

What speed is the ps3 BR drive?

Sony announced that PS3 uses a 2x BD drive, which is 72Mbits/second or 9MB/second. The Xbox360 uses a 12x DVD, which should give it about 16MB/second.

Ermm, there are CD drives that are 52X, does that make them ultra super fast, moreso than a DVD drive, hence better and with less loading times? No.
EDIT: I removed the link to the blog entry cause some of the info is not totally accurate. Also if there is more space on the disc, wouldn't it be possible to avoid compression for certain type of data in order to make it read at a higher speed (sort of contradicting the usefulness of the BDR or course but I'm wondering).

Ho ho ho....he who laughs last laughs loudest. It seems that Blu-Ray isn't a gimmick after all and sony was 110% to use Blu-Ray in the ps3. It doesn't take an idiot (except for 360 owners) to know that HD next gen game data will easily fill a dual layer dvd, hmmm....it looks like 360 owners will have to either invest a HD drive or worse still swap discs!

Wow.. Way to be a troll. News flash the same company that is making your beloved PS3 just recalled 3+ million batteries. Says a lot for their quality control. :D
And I wonder what the purpose of having a 50 gig disc with low data transfer rates and spreading out the data to be 20 gigs. Enjoy waiting for your game to load. Otherwise the guys at 360 figure ways to send more data compressed with a drive that has a higher transfer rate. Not to mention, not a lot of 360 gamers like to play 10 min of games and 3 hours of FMV.
Its funny I even mention this, but I always find it easier to be creative when I am trying to work against certain percieved limitations.

ZOMG, Load times!
I guess that's why Ted Price mentions the data constantly streaming from the disc, huh? *gasp* Logic hurt brain... Sony evil bad thing...

OH NO, SWAP DISKS! the end of the world! because after playing for 5 straight hours, the last thing i want to do is get off my ass and swap a disk.
