View Full Version : Bad anti-aliasing behind glass

Hi guys,
I thought this would've been asked before, but I didn't find anything through search so...

I'm setting up an interior scene, and apart from the ugly GI-stains (I'll get rid of them later ;) ) everything looks pretty good, except for my glass table: the frame underneath it looks very poor, and apparently has no anti-aliasing or whatsoever. I have this problem all the time with windows, but most of the time it doesn't really show, only this is a different case. Am I doing something wrong? The glass is the default glas004, which I darkened a little. Refraction index = 1.5. When I look at other people's C4D-renders with transparency-materials, they always look.. perfect

Can someone help me? :) Version is R9.0...

Change your AA settings to best:)

it is :) (by default) I guess I could set refraction to zero, but isn't it possible to have a nice refracting transparent object, with decent anti-aliasing behind it?

You can force higher AA settings on certain objects by using the compositing tag.

Hope you get it sorted.

Ok I'll screw around with it some more, thanks :)

I guess this is one of Cinema's weak spots?

not that I'd noticed, with best anti-aliasing instead of geometry.. transparency renders work just fine for me

That's strange, I always have AA on best, and yet I always end up with this problem. Could it be the version, 9.0?

try increasing "ray depth" and "reflection depth" in render settings > options
maybe that'll increase the quality of the output

hmm, doesn't really work.. I could set it to very high values ofcourse, but I work on a simple centrino-laptop, and I'd like to render within a day time ;) I'll just use a non-transparent table for now, maybe I'll find another solution...

this is correct. you'll need to put a comp tag on the glass object and force the aa setting up to say 2x2 4x4 or something. just setting to BEST wont always solve the problem.

that's what I needed! ;) it's still not 100% perfect (looks like there's some noise on the frame), but it's _much_ better than before... thanks steve!

oh right, sorry, thanks sjcrompo & steve! :applause:

ps; what does minimum & maximum do, really?

just google "adaptive antialiasing", you'll find a ton of resources

You can get a free update on Maxon's site. Just go to downloads and click on updates and then Cinema 4d R9.1.

Cheers,

you can just add more antialising with a comp. tag not lower it
so just select best min1x1 max 2x2 and set comp tags to specific objects to add some extra Anitalising

the dvds from janine are coverering this techniques in a exelent way.
www.3dfluff.com
i highly recomend this tuts even for 'experts'

cheers belushy
