And they regained their crown in Photoshop. I mean just look at the graph. The bars for the Macs have the numbers 3 and 2 or 2 and 3 after them plus a modulus operator. There is nothing after the Dell's bar, AND the bar for the Dell is gray. We can only conclude these Power Macs are the bestest computers ever.

Misleading benchmarks reach a new low . . .
The only reason to be impressed by that graph is if you spend more than an hour a day running radial blur . . .

Yeah, benchmarks are sketchy... they look great and the numbers are loud, but if you do the math based on the Lcache charts:
500MHz Original PG4 = 1
1GHz PG4 = 1 + .54 X 1 = 1.54
1.25DGHz PG4 = 1 + 1.76 X 1 = 2.76
1.42DGHz PG4 = 1 + 2.04 X 1 = 3.04
Ok, so there are their relative speeds. Then we examine that the speed increase from a 1.25GHz PG4 to a Dual 1.25 GHz PG4 is equal to 1.54/2.76 = .55 or that the 1GHz is 55% the speed of a dual 1.25. This is good, but is nothing special as duals usually gain about 30% performance increase juse from being duals, and an additional 10% for the extra 2.5GHz... putting an estimate at about an expected 40% increase in speed. The increase is percent is a little lower than expected, which is absolutely normal in such setups, but nothing to brag about if they are claiming a revolutionary Lcache.
Could this nicely optimized system be worth the outrageous price tag? Time will tell... :airguitar

Hey, do you know if these come with adapters for the dual heads on the vid cards? They say that they have a DVI to VGA, and ADC to DVI, but what about ADC straight to VGA? Does such a thing exist?

yeah, I found it. I would apreciate any info on it, anyway. My roommate is looking to buy one of these powermacs. So the post is for him.

This is sweet but I dont see any 15000rpm drives anywhere?
Is 7200 atas is all macs can handle or is it all they sell?

gilgamesh, afaik, they don't come with both adaptors, i use a dr botts adc-vga adaptor for my dual head gf4 card, and i use that screeen as my secondary, the quality seems fine to me. but you avhe ot buy the adaptor seperately.

I'd take apple's benchmarks with a container full of salt/:rolleyes:

ummm mccronin, the reason theres nothing next to the dell bar is because thats what theyre comparing the apple specs to.. what are they supposed to print, "0% faster than ourselves"? and wasnt there a freeze around here on the "what software should i use" threads - i believe the admins made it a sticky with all pertinent info; couldnt we do it with these things so we wouldnt have to see these trite threads every time apple news hits the board? drunken cripple reports it and thats cool, but then pillow heads start in with the whole smack down routine and the wars begin; its really old....

Wow my first slap on the wrist!
the powers that be must be Mac users.
Maybe the reply to my post (pre edit) received the same!
comments like pc's are POS (but I'm only stirring.)
My issue with Mac's relates to last yr I had experience with a network that was constantly down. We had constant issues with compatibility if something worked on my home p.c you could damn well count on it NOT working on the Mac's. Or working in a half arse way. Crashing!, and just generally being heaps o dung.
The way the file system works. Klunky! oh where did that file go?
the MICE! man need I go on!
they are just crap.
I think they are Overpriced! and they underperform.
There you go! I'm all worked up now...
I tried to block my interlude with Mac computers. but you brought
it all back.
This is sweet but I dont see any 15000rpm drives anywhere?
Thats SCSI.. ATA maxes at 7200, match that up with special edition 8MB cache drives and performance is the same if not better.. and cheaper.. I for one never noticed the speed of the drive no matter what I load.
Nice to see some improvement for macs... but they still cant seem to get over the hump GHz wise.. Maybe if they used active cooling instead of that big honkin HSF on the procs.. Or get rid of motorolas crappy chips altogether.....

I didn't realise Macs used passive heating for their chips. Man, that just isn't going to fly these days. With the fierce competition between AMD and Intel, you have to leverage whatever you can to keep up. And cooling is one of the biggest hurdles when it comes to CPU speed too. Apple could just use some very quiet fans or something, I don't know.
Akuma

Hmm,, wonder why noone has made these chips with a built in refrigerant? or maybe an attachment for the tower the brings the entire insides of the computer to near chill so it can be overclocked with little worry? maybe its to expensive to maintain?

I don't hate Macs or Mac users. Apples are pretty cool but I can't afford one. Even if I wanted to 'Switch' I couldn't afford to buy new licences for my all my apps let alone the cost of the hardware. I'm just enough of a computer geek that I can build my own PC's for cheap and deal with any problems that Window's throws my way.
The one thing that does bug me is how Mac fans will actually say you're stupid for using Windows. I know they get that too from Mac haters but I'm just an animator geek trying to make cool art. I'm not going to put anyone down for the tools they choose. It's just elitist nonsense.

Dodge! No Pontiac!
Macs! No PCs!
Bulls! No The Nicks!
Democrats! No Republicans!
Communism! No Democracy!
LOL, notice any kind of pattern?
Humans are just stupid like this... or rather, intollerant like this. No matter what happens.. if there are 2 apposing sides people will hate the other... but the truth is if there was no "other side" then people would wonder "why?".

I just want to reinforce a point in my original post that got
nuked... I admitted I was being a bit of A one eyed Bigott
when I made my earlier opinion known and really my opinion
is my own. And it is one I thought I had to share.
stupid as it might seem!
I should try to give credit where credit is due and
if it ends up benefiting us the users then I can't bag em.
if they are finally lowering their prices and releasing better
machines then good for them and us!
As I've said my opinion isn't derived solely in my " fords are better than..."
mentality. But from experience, and I was not alone in
coming to the same conclusion.
my p.c on the other hand(pats old betsy)is another story.

Seeing no difference is as simple-minded as seeing diferences in black and white. Opinions arent stupid, just the way they are expressed sometimes. And no one should be called stupid for having one.
I am personnaly tired of hearing "its all the same anyways". Which i find is as dumb a remark as "mac's are crap". I always hear "its not the tool"...
Yes, you can hammer in a nail with a hammer or a rock or your forehead, but at the end of the day i am pretty sure the guy who used the hammer will probably have done higher quality higher quantity work that day.
Don't forget, there's also a huge price-cut on the Apple LCD's.
They cut the 22" LCD in favor for a new 20" LCD. Looks really nice.
Hopefully I can save up a bit and get one.

I also have experience with both macs and pc and must say that my time in front of a mac was both wasted and irritating. something might be said for the network that the machines were running on but even when removed from the network they failed to stand up to the test.
I have a similar spec machine at home, pc that is, and i admit that it crashes once or twice a day. but in the race for incompatibility and user unfriendlyness the macs are way out in front.
Even the simplest of tasks involved more hassle then it was worth. trying to work on files in both a pc and mac platform was just not an option, even when compatability was supposed to be there for it. file corruptions and other random errors where frequent. and yeah, those mice that ship with them. ha, they are laughable, not only are they to small and have no shape to help point them the right way, but they resposiveness of them is absolute rubbish.
Give me an average built pc anyday before you sit me in front of a mac.

Gee, I always thought the Moderators were supposed to be above petty platform wars...
Guess I was wrong, or the quality of Mods around here is slipping as of late...
As for your Anti-Mac sentiments:
Aside from the mouse issue (which I wil address in a second), you need to reverse Mac & PC in the entire paragraph, and THEN you will have a true statement!
As for the mouse, well, obviously Apple learned that folks did NOT like the 'hockey puck' and they moved on to a better design...
Pity you cannot realize that the only problem you had with a Mac was a short in the Floor-To-Keyboard interface, and moved on...

Stop this fuc**ng war please, some people love Mac, some people love PC ? and other people love Solaris.linux.BeOS.irix_?
Don't says Mac can't connect to a Network, that's not real, all our mac at work is connected without any kind of problem. (NT server)
Sometine that doesn't work fine on a complex network, but they have always a solution for connect, and this is the same for a PC, sometine it couldn't connect to a network.
Don't says Mac corrupt files, that's the poorest argument i have read ! :shame:
Also NEW IMAC are here: 17" 1GHZ.

This thread has been restored at the request of users.
I'm closing it as there is no requirement for another Mac vs PC debate which results in flames.
Kindly work with the mods in a sensible manner rather than bash them.
Thanks
