Which one do you guys prefer and what do you use?

I'm not sure what I should buy for my new computer.

I know AMD is not qualified hardware on AW's site, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work, right?

I'd love to hear what your specs are :D

Thanks!

Tyan Thunder K7
2x Athlon MP1800+
GeForce 3 Ti500
1 GB ECC RAM
2x striped IBM Ultrastar SCSI 160 36GB drives

Maya smokes :)

I think that almost exclusively AMD offers more value for money, however there are issues with drivers and combinations of hardware that requires a bit of tweaking to get everything running smoothly. If you're willing to do that then you shouldn't consider anything else.

1.7 P4
GeForce 2
512 Mb Ram

Maya runs fine except on very large models. The Hypershade conks out occasionally (loses text + images), but that's most likely the GeForce.

Phssssh.... dual MP's? Non-sense. I'm talkin a 486dx (33mhz) with a 32mb hard drive and a whopping 2mb's of ram. My "workstation" SMOKES!!!

2 dual Athlon MP's will kick any dual P4's ass any day of the week.

Dual Athlon MP's are fast especially for rendering comparable to P4's. But they have heating problems and stablity issues if you don't customize it right. Unlike the P4 which is rock solid for stablity. At the moment no announcement was made from Intel regarding dual P4 system board. So it remains to be seen which dual processor set-up is the speed demon. For my money, a dual P4 XEON 2.2 Ghz. will kick a dual Athlon MP any day. If you have greens to afford it.

I use Maya on a dual Xeon 1.7 GHz and 512 RDRam and it's works perfectly

Screw Intel, what have they done to earn your money lately? They're just another on the list of uppity and complacent corporations that don't think they need to push the envelope anymore. Support AMD, they rock.

Up until today, the things in the world of Pc Hardware are as followed:

- First in the list comes Pentium 4 2,2Ghz 0,13M because it's the fastest and most reliable so far.
- Second comes AMD 2000XP 0,18M with a smaller difference in speed but a significant difference at cost(Athlon is much cheaper).

But if you wait a while AMD will produce the new 0,13M proccessor which promises higher speed and much lower temperatures.

The next chipset for Athlon will be much more stable for custom built PC especially cooling issues. At the moment, P4 is just as fast and you don't have to worry your system board melting or being fried due to heat.

I'm running the Tyan Tiger MP with:
2 Athlon 1600's
512 RAM
Geforce 2 GTS

Maya runs really nice, although I have some problems with other programs occasionally. Namely photoshop
