So, I recently bought Jeno Barcsay's "Anatomy for the Artist" 'cause I need some real help, people. :) It's been a few days, though, and I'm just picking it up. Here's a study I did from it:
http://myku.org/pics/Anatomy1%20%28small%29.jpg
I was feeling a little ambitious and found a simple tut for coloring greyscale pictures (which I've always wondered how to do). Gave it a shot- here's a quickie:

Mychael,
Welcome. :) The following links I think will be of great use to you. The first is a summary of a Workshop based on the grayscale to color painting method that I recommend beginners to digital painting to use:

This is Stahlberg's excellent step by step tutorial:
Stahlberg Grayscale > Color Painting Tutorial: (http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html)
http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html
I recommend viewing these tutorials and either trying painting a skull as with the first exercise, or applying the principles to your figure.
I look forward to seeing your progress! In addition, it would be nice if you could tell us something about your art training and background.
Cheers,
-Rebeccak
@ Rebecca: Hey! I am so thrilled by the impressive little collection of information you've put together here. Thank you so much. Any plans I had for this evening are officially cancelled ;)
As for myself, I've had no formal art training/schooling. I began teaching myself when I was a kid, stopped (except for the occassional doodle on the back of an envelope) for a long time, and have just recently rediscovered my love for art. Because I feel that I have lost many years that could have been spent building/refining my skills as a draftsman/painter, I am currently practicing quite seriously in an attempt to progress at a little quicker pace.
I have just started (as in about 2weeks ago) my 'career' as a student at the University of South Carolina, majoring in studio art and am an intern at the State Museum.
Frequenting this site has become one of my little daily pleasures. I love dropping in and seeing the work that everyone is producing. I also feel it is neccessary to surround myself with people who are more skilled/talented/experienced than I- what a great community!
Forgot this one. I did it yesterday from the same book...........

Mychael,
Thank you for the info, and good luck with your studies. :)
There will soon be a Workshop on the forum which I'm pretty sure a lot of people will participate in - the first installment of this Workshop series had 200 participants, so I am hoping the same will be the case here:
Coming Soon - The Anatomy Lesson Series - Body Part 2: The Torso (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=401086)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=401086
To receive email notification of when new Workshops and Tutorials (such as the one above) officially open, I recommend subscribing here:
Notification of New Open Figure Drawing Workshops / + TUTORIALS - SUBSCRIBE HERE! (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379951)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=379951
Looking forward to seeing some nice grayscale studies. :) One thing I highly recommend is filling your background with a dark gray. See the first tutorial previously posted - it outlines a simple working method which will greatly simplify your workflow when using grayscale.
Good luck!
Cheers,
-Rebeccak
Well, I stayed up late going over the great tutorials that Rebecca left for me and then painted this skull last night and today in between studying for a test I have Monday. I know there's some stuff wrong with it, but I just couldn't work on it anymore :).
http://myku.org/pics/Anatomy3%20%28small%29.jpg
Then, I used the tut on coloring greyscales by Stahlberg to do this......

Thanks a million, Rebecca! Any tips/tuts/comments/critiques are very very welcome. I need to learn!

Mychael,
Good lord, enormous progress here! :) The leap from your previous pieces to your skull rendering is commendable - nice work!
I highly recommend, if you have access to such courses, to take live figure drawing classes. If, however, you are unable to do so, the next best thing is to do master studies.
See this link which is a Sticky Thread at the top of this forum for useful links regarding master copies:
Master Copy Resources (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=354836)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=354836
I would encourage you to check out this recently concluded Workshop:
Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031&page=1&pp=35)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031&page=1&pp=35
Where participants were asked to draw / paint 50 heads (from provided reference) in one month. As I mentioned previously, we are soon to embark on the 2nd installment of this Workshop, where participants will be asked to draw / paint 50 torsos in one month. I would recommend trying at least a few of the portrait master copies from the above Workshop, as the 2nd Workshop won't be starting for around another week.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
EDIT: Actually, posting these links to your thread has encouraged me to be more organized - you can find the same list of links more or less here in case you need to reference them again, or to point them out to someone else, which is always helpful: :)

Rebecca,
More organized? Looks like you've cornered the market in that area already ;). Anyway, thanks so much for your guidance and encouragement. The great tutorials helped me straighten out some things that I was doing backwards (I haven't had any drawing classes yet, so I'm just winging it now). I'll surely pass the link along if I have occasion to do so. As for the workshop you posted, I'll definitely give it a shot. (And sorry about the cheezy '50 eggs' thing- I love Cool Hand Luke :D.
Peace.

Here's a study of Head #01 from the draw 50 heads workshop. This was loads of fun, but I finally got tired and gave up . Learned a lot, though.
:EDIT: Sorry about the marble block at the bottom- It really looks bad. Guess I should have spent a little more time on that.........oops.

Wow! Am I happy I dropped in here to have a look?! :) :) this is great work Mychael, I love the scull :bounce: , the head is great too and some nice hand studies earlier... keep it up, you have the passion for art and there's no limit where it can take you as long as it's something you enjoy doing :)
I will be back here for sure and hope to see you doing the torso challenge (as well as the heads that you are working on at the moment ;) )
take care
a. :)
The head #1 looks like a photograph. And the skull study before is just amazing. Post more perkele!
Mychael
hi there
saw your head study at the head challenge thread earlier today... now I know who actually made it :)
that is darn well done man! don't worry about the marble... sometimes it's the small imperfections making a piece that much better ;)
your skull study is very impressive too I must say... very inspiring... I might give it a try as well tonight
Very curious about what you'll bring next and I hope you'll join the torso challenge Rebecca was mentioning
Wow. Thanks so much, guys, for stopping here to check out my little scribbles and for leaving such wonderfully encouraging comments. I was actually so swamped yesterday that I didn't even have time to paint (well, except for six or seven studies I did of an ashtray........don't ask ;)), so I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to reply here.
@Rebecca: Thanks for the info you've left here and all the time you've spent. You're so incredibly talented, so any complements from you are very highly regarded :). Also, thanks for making me feel so welcome here! Cheers.
@Frejasphere: Such kind words! I'm so glad you like what few pics I have here- I have quite enjoyed looking through your thread as well.....'Mother Earth Will Carry Me Back to the Sea' blows me away (but I've said that before ;)).
@Jho: Thanks for your comments; they are much appreciated. Looks like your anatomy studies are coming along pretty well too; the last torsos you did in particular .
@NR43: HaHa. Well, I'm glad you like the head study IN SPITE of the muddled marble! BTW, your work is very inspiring too- an enormous amount of progress can be seen on your thread. You must really put 110% into your work.
Well, I need to get to work, I have a couple of hours before I've got to be in class tonight (ART History! yay!), so I'm going to see if I can (finally) get down to a little painting.
Peace.
I started this during my break between classes today and finished it up tonight. Not much to say about it really. It's just a study from a sketch in the "Drawing from the High Art School" (http://veda3d.com/edu/anatomy_drawing_book.htm) book. I took a bit of artistic license with it, though, using my own shading technique. I learned from doing this sketch that I need to refine my brush technique more in order to pick up more subtle ranges of value.

Just kidding............ *please, don't hate me *
Anyway, nothing special here, just a quick sketch of my hand- playing around with painting directly to color.... yikes! :argh:. I went for a rougher, more unfinished look, and primarily used a textured brush. It was fun being all sloppy and scribbly.

Hi Mychael, very good progress you make.. just keep on rocking :))
Well, things have been crazy at school with tests and projects and all kinds of other good stuff, so I haven't been working as much as I'd like . Poor me, right? Anyway, thanks so much to everyone who's stopped by and encouraged me.
@ Cris: Thank you! I've been following your thread and am really into it- you're really quite a fabulous artist. I could learn a lot from you........ ;).
@ Frejasphere: Haha. I'm just slow, but I'm working on it. I wish I could whip out pics as fast as you! I was really impressed with how quickly you attacked those torso studies!
@ SpiritDreamer: Thanks for the kind words, Glen. I'm really just trying to practice and improve my basic skills so that I can approach some more personal/creative projects with more confidence and freedom......... like you seem to do!
@ Talaria: Glad you liked my skull! I don't know why, but something just clicked when I was working on it. It's true, I really have learned a lot from the few pieces on this thread and from studying great threads like yours.
@ Rebecca: Thanks for pushing me! I really admire you for the work you put in here :applause::applause::applause:.
@ mazalo: MMMM. I think when I get to torso #3, you'll be on like #30??!! Oh well. I'm really enjoying your great painting style- your step-by-step you posted in the torso workshop was helpful to me. Thanks!

Amazingly beautiful work here! You've got a real eye for detail and a lot of patience, and it pays off! Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
@ mynti: Hey! Thanks for checking out my stuff. You've discovered my secret- "patience." Don't tell anybody (haha). Really though, I have to be patient; some people here can whip out master works in the time it takes me to select a palette and figure out what brushes to use, but that's not me... not yet. Working on it, though. I noticed you're off to an excellent start as well. lots of great stuff in your thread- you have a nice touch, which could develop into something really special.
K. So I've been sick recently and couldn't sleep last night, but was too groggy to work on anything serious/technical so I drew this little cartoon @ about 4am. Very silly and sketchy, but I had fun experimenting with a brush that I've never used before........
http://myku.org/pics/S3.jpg
How could I forget? This was also done yesterday while my wife was on the phone with her mother- used the same 'dry brush' as the previous little cartoon. No ref used........

Hi...Mychael...:)
Just enjoying your latest works....like the combination of referenced studies, and creations
from your imagination....seems like the right approach to learning and then applying bits of
what is learned to your own new creations....copying can become a trap, and can rob an artist of thier true voice, if taken too far I THINK....but the way you are going about it is the right way I THINK...The results speak for themselves...like on that last one you posted...great job there....nice mood created...
Really looking forward to seeing where this learning journy takes you....looking GREAT so far..:applause:
THANKS for stopping by my thread by the way...and for the kind words...keeps me going, and means alot... to me..:)

Hi....Myku....
Really like your method of learning with that night shift piece...captured the mood nicely...:applause:
Notice how Picasso uses colors to unify the paintings elements...to get that ONENESS
I wonder what would happen, if you put a light transparent orange tint over and into the background..the green sign, moon and all...that orange might creat a nice harmony, and act like a unifying element in your painting, plus creat color balance of purple and orange.
.....just a thought
REALLY looking forward to seeing more experiments like that one from you...
WAY TO GO...Myku...

@ abyss103: Hey, thanks a lot! I enjoyed stopping by your thread as well. Glad you thought the Picasso thing was fun- it was for me too....... please check me out again.
@ SpiritDreamer: Thanks so much for the comments and advice, Glen. :lightbulb I tried to throw an orangy transparency over the piece this morning when I got up (before my coffee even- that's how serious I take you!), but I couldn't get it to work at all . Everything just kept looking so washed-out even though I tried multiple levels of opacity, multiple settings for the layers (color, screen, overlay, etc. etc), and playing with the lightness/contrast........ No dice :arteest:. I'm totally in love with the idea, however; I think you've hit the nail right on the head with the unifying element of color. So, I'll probably go back later and try to over-paint it and see if I can get the result that way.
Now, I've got to go study for an exam :argh:............
PS: Everyone seems to really like the skull! (haha) Guess I'll have to do something else of that calibur soon..........
Peace, guys.

Hi....Myku...I am very impressed with the mood you capture in your paintings
I hope you don't mind my little paintover...just easier for me to show what I mean, than to tell with words.
Took about ten minutes...just used the colored spot lights in painter # 9....they act like stage lights...can move and aim them where desired....used a couple of orange, and a couple of purple lights....brought out the complements....orange / green, and purple / yellow.
Goal... to give it color harmony....color balance and ONENESS...:)
Great painting Myku.....really like her face and gesture , and like I said the mood is captured perfectly.
Hope this helps in some way, with your journy into color.

http://artbyglenngallegos.com/images/Nightshift2.jpg
Hey, Glenn. Anytime you want to pop in and do a paintover, you go right ahead- I'm always honored to have your input, and if I ever happen to protest, it's just the booze talking.......
Anyway, I just sat down and started messing with this pic again in Painter, and realized that my Photoshop file is somehow an older version of this painting that's missing several key anatomical adjustments to the face and hands!!! I think I originally saved it as a jpeg, put it online, then saw it and quickly went back and made a few revisions, overwriting the jpeg file without updating the file in Photoshop (if that makes sense) :banghead:.
Oh well, you gave me some great ideas that will enhance my digital painting, and that's enough for me! So, since this painting was just a quicky done for practice anyway, and since you were kind enough to give us a paintover showing a nice technique for reworking the colors, I'm just going to walk away from it- we can just call this one a 'group project,' eh?

09-29-2006, 10:16 PM
Mychael, been there, done that. ;)
I've learned to give things unique names. In Painter, I do iterative saves.
Painting is looking good. The variations in image adjustments (Photoshop) is a good way of playing with colorations. I do it on a copy. Sometimes only a part of my painting ends up with an interesting effect. I apply it and use a layer mask to use it. Variations can be very useful.
Cris
Well.

I really have to say 'thanks' to Cris and Glenn for being so gracious as to share your wisdom and knowledge with me.......... not popped in here (or anywhere) for a while (inundated and had to finish work before I could play :D) lots of great work! I like your humour too  The nightshift - modern Absinthe drinker has a great feel about her... I actually like the drab green and coldish light, but maybe that's me - absinthe is green
and the surreal model with the cute painter - just keep the ideas flowing it's working and as long as you are enjoying it  :bounce:
take care and cheers!

Annette: Sorry to hear you've been tied up. I know how that goes; I haven't been as active here lately as I'd like to be either . Now that you're 'back in action,' I'll head on over to your thread and see what's new. Oh, and I won't ask about the absinthe thing.................;)
Now, I'm not sure why the fascination with hands, but I like to draw/paint them. I find it fun to sketch out hands without reference and just try to 'feel' my way through them. Sometimes I manage to get something that looks natural, sometimes not......

Hey there again :)
I really like your thread  2 main reasons.... mmmm make that 3 LOL:
1: you go places fast :) as in your passion for art show through in your experimentation and obvious progress.
2: great work, always exciting to see what you're up to :)
3: sense of humour :) I like that - in life, in art.. it's a good thing to get you through life on most days ;)
and no.. we won't talk absinthe any more :D
hands... they really are fascinating aren't they! someone told me they see hands as the most expressive part of the human body - even more so than the face... I do believe that most of us tend to talk with our hands (more or less) and for those of us who use our hands to create, mould, paint, make things.. the hands become such a central part of who you are...
I think I'll quit waffling while I'm ahead :D
great work Mychael - keep it up :)
cheers and take care

I really like the skin color you got on your Winter piece. The first recommendation I would make is to take look at the head...check the anatomy. I tried to base my paintover on what I thought you were doing.
Blowing through your lips is a difficult one to do. Take some photos of someone doing this...or have them take them of you. It will help for you to have reference.

I look forward to seeing you continue to develop this.

Well, this is the first that I've had a chance to check in here for a while. School is all over me, and I've got project after project after project breathing down my neck right now. I will try to post some work soon, as there's nothing I'd rather do than a little painting ;).
Annette: Flattery will get you everywhere! :scream: Just kidding- thanks for your comments and thoughts. I really look forward to checking out your thread and seeing all that I've missed!
Cris: Thanks a million for the help. I needed someone else to step in and give me a little perspective because I knew it was off, but couldn't put my finger on 'why'. I'm so swamped right now, but the winter painting is going to the top of my list. Cheers!
Just thought I'd check in so people wouldn't think I'd been in a boating accident or killed by dinosaurs or something. Will get some work up within the next few days (?).
