Greetings all!

I am an absolute beginner in Maya, and as such I have two very basic questions:

1) I downloaded tons of shaders from the internet and they are now stuck in my cd 'cause I can't install them. I mean, it does not seem to be as easy as droping them in the right folder, as they will all have the default maya logo as their iconn. Could anyone tell me then what is the right procedure to install maya shaders so that I have browsable Icons in the Hypershade?

2) The same question on a different subject: PaintFx. Also downloaded lots of them and did not get them to work. Tips about installig?

as a beginner you should start off with the manuals of maya and not with downloading shaders and paint fx (btw.. to be able to use paint fx you will have to have a LOT experience in maya).

for the shaders: either drag them into maya or import

I did start with the manuals and did import the shaders. I have some 3dsMax background and the Shaders, the paintFx, the dinamics and stuff are the features of Maya that did really catch my eyes.

I, though, live some 100 miles away from where my pc is right now, only being able to use it on weekends. As I have a fine connection here, I spend my time between weekends on downloads of tutorials, videos and addons.

I was able to make some very interesting things with paintFx, even though I was so new to maya, and wnated to try to move on to the new brushes I found.

As for the shaders, importing is one thing i did not exactly think about... could you give me some tips about how should I proceed to import shaders?

Thanks in advance.

in the main window:
file->import and as option there best guess of the correct file extension if you like..

or in hypershade file->import as well
