ok, this may at first seem like it is off topic.......BUT, this is very important news. Clive Barkers new novel (the first in a series of four) finally came out. The series is called Abarat.

Now, why you may ask is this relevant to an art forum.........well a few reasons. For starters he created about 300 oil paintings to illustrate the story.........our 2D crowd is gonna LOVE the artwork in it......this book is FULL of GORGEOUS inspirational full color full page prints of these paintings.

The other reason this is important.....and this is the biggest reason of all. This series is going to be the next Harry Potter (in terms of popularity)........and Disney is going to insure that. The first movie is slated to come out in 2005 (and this one is gonna be chock full of groundbreaking FX) there is going to a series of video games.......possibly a show......and disney is even planning to open an Abarat section in the disney parks!!! This thing is gonna be HUGE!

SO, now you should understand why this is GOING to be VERY big news to this forum. So, go and get a copy now while the hardcover full color glossy edition is still available.........this is a good one....and it is going to be remembered :)

I know, thats what is so beautiful about it!

I mean after all isnt that what pixar did???? They rode the financial coattails of disney until they fullfilled the contract and made tons of $$$ then got out!

Actually, from what I understand, one of the reasons that we have never seen a Pinhead figure from McFarlane Toys is because Disney owns the rights to Hellraiser and isn't giving them to anyone.

I read that the other week, its a good story, quite tame in comparison to some of his other books like Imagica or Weaveworld - I guess its been Disneyed ;) The artwork is way cool, full colour printing on glossy stock all the way through - its about the same weight as a normal hardcover 4 times its size...

No, its not disneyed.......this is a story he's been working on for the past 5 years now........he decided to do something not as hardcore...and just more fun for once. And HE chose disney as his outlet because he wanted it to get into every medium possible. Imajica and Weaveworld are my favs by far.......but this one is really cool :) and if you really think about the content it is still really dark for disney.......i dont know how they are going to make a movie out of it.....prolly gonna be under mirimax :)

and yeah, the glossy stock makes it a weighty tome.....def worth having in the collection :)

Dont get we wrong, I really liked the book :) - I actually enjoyed the, dunno what you would call it, level of grossness I suppose, some of the scenes in weaveworld didnt sit too well with me! I'm looking foward to the rest of the series as well.

I think it could make a good movie, it would need a sh*teload of effects- probably be real fun to work on - imagine getting the brief for the big moth!

yeah, i cant wait to see what they do with the movie........most of the main characters would have to be totally CG.......Carrion is gonna be BADASS on the screen as long as they stick with Clive's paintings as the concept art.

I would love to see Tim Burton get this project as a nice comeback flick. It screems burton style!!! There are even a lot of stripes in Clive's paintings. I think John Mischief would be a LOT of fun to work on.......i dont think i have ever seen an 8 headed main character in a movie before......lol

Fanstasy and FX wise, if this is done well, it is going to make Harry Potter look like a low budget student film.......lol It will def be cool to see the coming in of the Sea of Izabella......will be awesome to see the grass start changing into water.

This one is gonna be fun...........would love to work on it!

ok, well im about 30 pages away from finishing the first book.....and let me say it has been amazing all the way thru!

I'm thinking (as of being nearly done with the first one) that this is gonna have to be an animated feature as there would be SO many FX in it it may as well be!

I think if this were done in CG in the style of say......The Nightmare Before Christmas, this could be one of the coolest animated movies ever made!!!!

I cant wait for the next one to come out!!! only about 6 more months!!!! WOOHOO!!!

oh btw, this one is 100x more fantastic than harry potter.....

kinda like Alice in Wonderland.............with magic
