View Full Version : Gemini, Soa Lee (3D)
09-06-2006, 04:45 AM
Name: Soa Lee
Country: Korea (South)
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s, Photoshop
This image of the Twins constellation describes the friendly kinship between two brothers.
This image was based on the setting when they were playing hide-and-seek with friends as kids.
They traversed over the deep woods and hid themselves among the shrubs that no one could find. As their mates turned away after failing to find them, they started singing and playing harp.
As the dusk sets in the late afternoon, their bodies start to emit shining lights and large stars appear over their heads. Angel’s wings then come out of Pollux’s back as he possesses an immortal body. This symbolizes and sheds hint on the storm accidents at the ship was to be named Argo and their destiny.
Lemon inside the basket held by the brothers are the fruits of Gemini, Iris in full blossom in front of them are the flowers of the Gemini.
As I working on this project, I have for the first time implemented a “sub surface scatter” shader (aka SSS), which is a semitransparent skin material.

Front page, for sure !
Another cool work you have done !
Just one question, how did you make the hair ?
09-06-2006, 03:19 PM
This is not the sort of art that I use for inspiration yet it is so beautiful I had to save it a to my favorites anyway.
09-06-2006, 03:49 PM
How beautiful of the twins!
You can be better!
09-06-2006, 03:50 PM
 .most your works are wonderful.Any thing are very detail .
5 stars for your works.
09-06-2006, 03:54 PM
That is amazing. Very lovely and soft.
Just beautifully rendered.
09-06-2006, 03:58 PM
Wow, this is absolutely amazing. I always love to see "painterly" 3D work, but this is definitely the best I've seen yet. Wonderful use of colour and lighting, and superb modeling too (except for one or two small problematic areas... like the hands and knees... but these are pretty small).
Possibly the best work I've seen on this site all year
09-06-2006, 04:02 PM
3 stars? 3 stars?.-...
i love it!..
5 stars from me :)
09-06-2006, 04:09 PM
This is absolutely stunning!! wonderful work!I love how magical it is..
09-06-2006, 04:16 PM
this is magnificent!!! what a materpiece!!
Great work again Soa~ lovely angels :)
If I may add a crit, I'd say the skin looks quite plastic especially on the body / legs. I think you should play a bit more with specular/glossiness variation, and maybe add a bit off faloff diffuse to simulate tiny white hair on the skin.
09-06-2006, 04:24 PM
Really great work Soa...
No crits... only great!... 5***** from me!
How did this work only have 3.6 star rating? Anyone voting less then 4 stars for this should be immediately banned from cgtalk.
5 stars from me, keep them coming Soa.
09-06-2006, 04:40 PM
Wow. She is one of the best character modeler in the world.. Top 3. I think..
let's bring her to "meet the artist" section...
09-06-2006, 04:53 PM
hmph, he couldn't even fly with such little wings
09-06-2006, 04:58 PM
We didn't wait to long to see it in front page !
So, congratulations ! again !
Maybe some cool award, coming next
Wow , this is pure art , Amazing

Amazing how you got it too look like a painting!
09-06-2006, 06:45 PM
very beautiful work you have there! The only thing that bothers me somewhat, is that closeup picture of her face, the left eye has no highlight in it, so that eye looks lifeless or something. Great job though on the atmosphere!
09-06-2006, 06:46 PM
nice work. the fabric is gr8. and the grass looks kind intresting too
09-06-2006, 06:49 PM
You've created another beautiful piece, Soa. Looking forward to see what you come up with next.
How about "Capricorn"...my zodiac symbol? :D

09-06-2006, 10:38 PM
Really is a work very nice, that incredible the textures and colors..
09-06-2006, 10:54 PM
perfekt. very very nice work.
09-06-2006, 11:44 PM
Again a great artwork from you !
Resembles the "Polar Express looking", kind of 'plastic' or 'painting looking' at same time so vivid in color. I know it may sound silly but I feel a sort of 'Christmas' mood in there.
I see the many 'codes' you represented on this picture, as well the great balance and composition.
Looks lovely !
5 stars ! No less.
09-06-2006, 11:47 PM
Incredible image! I think the hands could be refined a lil more but otherwise, really superb.
09-06-2006, 11:56 PM
I too thought this was another Enalya creation when I saw it on the Front page.
The atmosphere is beautiful. You've really built upon the style you had going with your "Europa", pieces. The faces are beautiful and the whole feels like an oil painting. I do feel that the shape and posing of the hands, feet and knees detract from the overall feel. Most noticeable is the left hand of the left twin. The way in which the hand is flexed at the wrist seems very unnatural. You seem to have the bend point at the process on the radius (the forearm bone) near the wrist. The bend should be about an inch further towards the hand. The left foot on the same twin also seems odd, whereby the outside edge of the foot is arched, as if the arch of the foot extends all the way across the bottom the foot.
However, I only noticed these things because I really interrogated the piece for form. My main attention was drawn away from these points.
09-07-2006, 12:04 AM
So detail and so beautiful work as usual!!
09-07-2006, 12:08 AM
Very beautiful as always! 5 stars
09-07-2006, 12:28 AM
A very beautiful artwork. I am amazed at the soft feeling you managed to get with 3d. It certainly looks like a painter image! So very nice. I'm curious though... how did you manage to get such beautiful foliage? Does Brazil help with that?
09-07-2006, 01:11 AM
Seeing work like this makes it worth it staying late after work fixing bugs, and testing software, so that you can make miracles happen....
09-07-2006, 01:24 AM
you people from Asia, you people are lunatiks to detail!
ffs man, this is awesome piece!
09-07-2006, 01:28 AM

09-07-2006, 01:30 AM

09-07-2006, 02:30 AM
good work the skin is so penetrate
09-07-2006, 03:29 AM
I like it a lot. Awesome.
09-07-2006, 03:44 AM
If I were Soa, I will remove the image 1/4 to 1/5 and remove the two sparking fireworks from the top so the main focus will drop on the Gemini.
09-07-2006, 04:57 AM
Damn, girl, you just keep getting better! I love your sensibility for idealistic beauty--we're on the same wavelength in that regard. Your latest works feel almost like what Bouguereau would do if he learned 3D. :)
09-07-2006, 05:27 AM
wow.canvas style.......nice work.
09-07-2006, 06:00 AM
09-07-2006, 06:39 AM

Absolutely brilliant work !!!
beautiful characters and great textures, lighting looks great too..
09-07-2006, 07:03 AM
Excellent work!!!
09-07-2006, 07:28 AM
It's a nice overall effect, but I think you were a bit lazy when it came to the character modeling. The anatomy is pretty smooth and basic, and not very accurate in places. This sort of neoclassical style concept requires consumate display of anatomy skill and knowledge. The lack of figure skill shown turns it into more of a sweet chocolate box image.
09-07-2006, 08:15 AM
I just love your work! it's so detailed and soft. :applause:
09-07-2006, 08:15 AM
Truely a nice render! Very nice! Great colors, theme, composition, everything is pretty much top notch!

09-07-2006, 09:04 AM
very impressive 3d work, overall the image feels very good
I'd agree with previous comments about the anatomy.in particluar the legs could use more attention.
the faces though look straight out of a Boticelli painting, they just look stunning!,amazing work!

09-07-2006, 06:00 PM
It's a nice overall effect, but I think you were a bit lazy when it came to the character modeling. The anatomy is pretty smooth and display of anatomy skill and knowledge. The lack of figure skill shown turns it into more of a sweet chocolate box image.

09-08-2006, 06:56 AM
Thanks for the the replies soanala! It takes some serious time to keep up with a plugged thread and you do a great job!
About the foliage- I understand the teexturing aspect, it is really the geometry that eludes me. Did you manually place the geometry or did you use something similar to xfrog?
Congratulations again on a beautiful piece!
09-08-2006, 07:54 AM
hoho very well.:)
But this boy's left leg looks like a little the question.
This is my some individual suggestions .
09-08-2006, 10:58 AM
The tone is very nice, but I feel as though the gold and cloth materials (in particular) are letting the scene down a bit.. The material makes the cloth look too thick to deform the way it does, and the gold just looks.. off.
It's a pity, cause it distracts from the rest of the scene for me.
09-08-2006, 04:47 PM
This is absolutely stunning!! Great job Soa :) 5*
Beautiful. I love the skin tones, so soft and suit the style so well. Congrats, another amazing piece to add to your collection :P
09-11-2006, 02:33 AM
hey~ haven't seen you post for a while. how're you doing? ^^
love this one, it's all very real other than the texture on the legs being a little too smooth. hope you post more :)
09-16-2006, 03:22 AM
I'm proud you for my country.
09-26-2006, 11:50 PM
Incredible. I always love it when artists can create something that looks like a painting but in 3D -- it really shows that just because you work on a computer it doesn't mean that you're any less an artist than any painter!
09-27-2006, 02:23 PM
... awesome kitsch ...
09-27-2006, 03:48 PM
09-27-2006, 07:21 PM

10-04-2006, 12:47 PM
I love your modelling as well as texturing works. How the subsurface scatter works in 3dsmax.
10-06-2006, 01:38 PM
That's incredible! Really tremendous work.
10-06-2006, 04:23 PM
details are beyond comprehension...
(I am in no place to actually crit this work but complements are not really useful so... 2 things, left characters wrist angle could be a tad steep, left characters foot, in the middle, crease looks a bit sharp.)
mind blowing work.
10-06-2006, 04:55 PM
That's, Really is very beautiful work.
10-07-2006, 03:25 PM
Your work is spectacular. Your image makes me think of the images of William Bouguereau (a French painter of the end of XlX century but i suppose that you know this painter).
10-07-2006, 08:05 PM
10-09-2006, 05:02 PM
It's beautiful, very nice. The only thing, I might say, the skin shader looks a little bit plasticky, but this is really being picky as your work is lovely :)

이 사이트 뉴스레터를 구독하는데 낯이 익은 작품이 있어서 타고 들어와 봤습니다.
이미 여러 국적의 여러분들이 너무나 좋은 말씀들을 많이 하셔서 별다른 말은 필요없을거 같네요. ^^;

Just can't find any words that can describe the elaboration of Soa Lee's works :)
10-30-2006, 08:48 PM
the corners of the mouth and the skin complexion and facial structure of the angel to the right really make this something special. Great job overall but A+++ on the things I just mentioned

11-04-2006, 04:05 PM
I am astonished by your work, as a 3D artist myself, I am always trying to find time to create fine art like what you have done. How long did this work take and on average how long does it take to create your art? Also, do you do work like this for clients, and was this for a specific project? It's AMAZING!
Nice touch with the sparkles too...
11-08-2006, 04:58 AM
