Is it just me or are character sets by default rubbish?
I've set up my character to have one main character, and sub character sets for things like limbs, face, head, etc and it's nice to be able to see and edit all the keys of the entire set, but the problem lies in the totally ludicrous system of acctually activating the character sets. When posing a character, switching between the character sets with that menu is simply retarded, surely that's not the only way?

The best way i've found to make character sets usable is to use zooTriggered so when you select a controller object it activates the related character set. It's handy but i have to have zooTriggered installed and loaded to be able to use it, and i've gotten some problems with the redos using it. Has anyone else came up with a better/another way?

I'm not sure if I understood the question correctly, but there are a couple of ways to select the sets...

1. use the Sets button next to the range slider
2. use the outliner
3. in the Trax editor, turn on the Autoload or Autorefresh, forgot what it's called, but any time you select a new set, or multiple sets, it will load them up in the editor without having to manually make it visible.

I personally use the Sets button and keep the autoload on while I work with character sets.

I'm talking about activating character sets, not selecting them. The only way to activate a character set is use the Set Current Character Set menu (also available near the range slider, the Set button you mentioned) and it is an atrocious menu. Esspecially when you have a character with multiple sub-character sets making up different parts of the body, having to dig through 3 menus and pick from 11 different characters/sub-characters (main character, left and right arm, left and right leg, left and right fingers, head, face, mouth and spine sub characters) each time i moved to a different part of the body, is an exceptional time waste and pain the arse. You can't even make that menu floating like you can any other menu.
As i said, i had to use zooTriggered to activated the specific character sets when you select controller objects.

I love maya, but this is simply terrible and hasn't changed since it was implemented (much like maya's horrible skin tools).

What's the command that gets executed whenever you select an item in the character set menu? You should be able to use that commands to come up with a mel script or at least a shelf button to activate subsets.

setCurrentCharacters( { "nameOfCharacterSet" } );
