View Full Version : Character: Hillbilly facial expressions
Just started on this little project for fun. Itīs supposed to be a hillbilly-character, sort of an ex-hockeyplayer or something.
Just playing around with the expressions for now.
What do you guys think?

Iīm modelling the meshback-cap at the moment. Iīll add it later.
thanks

he seems more like a redneck than a hillbilly to me. :p i usually think of the stereotypical beard and straw hat. Anyway, I see your model deforms well to get that broad range of emotions. I'd like to see maybe a big smile and a laugh expression in there with those sneers and snarls. The only thing i see that kinda rubs me the wrong way is the dimple in his chin. It's a little too pronounced. Maybe shallow it out a little bit or elongate it to make more of a "valley" on the chin. I'll keep checkin' up on ya partner (that's redneck talk ;) Yeee-haw!

It's a great start and a cool design. I'd like to see a push for more broad range in such a big face. The lips are well constructed and seem capable of a very broad range of expression. So I'd be interested in seeing how far it can be pushed. Also, the cheeks under the eyes aren't bunching up very much on the smiles. That makes his smile seem insincere. The difference between a sincere smile and forced smile is that flexing of the muscles around the eyes, specifically in the upper cheeks raising up just below the eyes .
He should be fun to animate, but probably tricky. Big mouthed characters can flap really badly if you're not careful. I'd love to see a test animation. Nice work!

love it! nice character!! nice expression!! cant wait to see the finished product. How about a wireframe?
I like the stylization a lot, and the texturing is really good...
to critique, i would definitely agree with Mr. Lango about the expressions, cuz his face can be a lot more exagerated... and for the texture, the lips could use a bit more detail, maybe some color variation and bump mapping. I dont know what you have planned as far as animation goes but i'd like to see it move.

good model. im getting more of a crazy german guy though. if you want to go hillbilly give him some sterotypical traits. straw in his mouth, some dirt on his face, overbite, spitin tabaco. you know crap like that
Thanks everybody!
First off, since english isnīt my native language, I sort of mixed up hillbilly with redneck.
Redneck is of course the word I was looking for. Iīll correct the threadname.
psyop63b:
Iīll be sure to check out the dimple. I think part of the problem lies in the texture map, thatīs why itīs so pronounced.
keithlango:
I will definitely try to push him as far as I can. Youīre absolutely right about the cheeks and Iīll fix that right away.
3urd:
I see what you mean... I had too much detail on the lips at first, and pulled back a bit. Perhaps it was a tad too much.
lordmachuca:
German? Hehe, when you say it... Or british hooligan? Iīm adding a capīn beercan as we speak.
Thanks everybody for the excellent input. Iīll try to post some updates and wireframes later today.

Hey!
Since this is a sideproject for me I havenīt had as much time to update as I wish.
But I finally looked into the changes you guys suggested and made some modifications.
I also came around and did the body. Still have some detailing to do, but you can see where itīs going.

I decided to put my favourite redneck in a scifi-enviroment. No big changes really, I just couldnīt resist modelling the cyber-boots. But he still gonna have the beergut and all.

I also made a short lipsync. You can download it here:

Great character! Loved the model, textures, and the lip synch.
The only thing I didnīt really like are the eyebrows - they seem a little thin. In such a face, I would imagine big, broad ones - or no eyebrow at all.
Anyway, good job! :buttrock:
Forgot to tell!
I havenīt done the eyebrows yet. Iīm fiddling with paintFX right now trying to get some decent results.
So I can understand that they appear to be a tad bit thin...
Iīll update as soon as I can.
thanks

hi great model
waiting to see a full animation test
yo expressions are in a good way but you can play alot more with the face
yo have to move down and up teh mandibule you can do this with moprhs or bones
play with the corners and the middles of the superior and inferior lips
And with the middle of the cheeks of the eyes can give the face more expressions
hear you have a website with lot of morphs telling you what is need to arrive to good espressions

really nice work rob.
too many people with too much talent here.
as an after thought though he looks more "urban thug" than redneck to me.

Finally updated my redneck! I changed some of the things you guys pointed out and gave him some more cybernetics. I updated the image in an earlier post above.
Iīm still texturing, but I couldnīt resist animating a little sequence to test the rigging. Below are some frames from the clip and a download link.
The audio is taken from the brilliant movie Casino feat. Joe Pesci (includes some profanity - youīve been warned).

hahaha he makes me laugh good job man cant wait to see more stuff from you
Thanks for all the kind replies. About the eyebrows... This is a tricky thing. At first I just used paintFX as I always do, but they turned out rather thin and hard to control. So I then I painted the brows in the colormap, but that looked way too flat...
Now Iīm back to PaintFX, trying to get the right settings. This is what I got so far...
