View Full Version : New To MEL: Line Numbers! Help!!
stowaway0 09-05-2006, 06:13 PM How can you show line numbers on a script in the Maya 7 Script Editor?
I'm fairly new to MEL and I haven't written a lot of long scripts but I'm getting an error number on line 321 of a 3rd party script and would like to trouble shoot it myself.
I've seen on several forums that Ctrl+shift+L will show line numbers for selected text (and toggle bullets, etc) but it doesn't work for me. Any ideas? I'm using Maya 7 Unlimited on OS X.

Open the script in a text editor (such as TextPad (http://www.textpad.com/)) that has the option to show line numbers.
If it doesn't get you to the exact line number it should get you very close.

Or, you can go into Maya's script editor, copy your script into the bottom panel, go to the top, and start hitting the down arrow and counting as you do. That is, if you are paid by the hour...

Textpad is worth every penny. Register it and start using a real text editor!
good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion! I suppose this feature (Ctrl+shift+L) is no longer supported by the script editor?
Unfortunately as the use of TextPad goes I'm using OSX and it looks like they only have a Windows version available. Fortunately, however, I found a couple great free and commercial text editors that will show line numbers. (for those interested: Smultron (free), TextWrangler (free), and TextMate (commercial))

haha, thanks! Possibly the best Maya tip available! I'll remember that when I get paid by the hour.

Maya 8 has line numbers. Took 8 versions to get line numbers. Waow.
I NEVER use the script editor and all I do is code:

Ctrl+Shift+L only seems to be supported on windows for some reason.

I really like Notepad++, if you switch the language setting to TCL, it's pretty close to mel script.
