hey guys. I'm trying to combine normal maps and a bump map in maya. I got normal maps out of ZB, but my machine's to weak to handle high frequency details like pores etc, so i decided to put it in bump.

I got normal maps working in both maya software renderer and mental ray. Since normal map takes over bump slot, i'm kinda stuck.

Help anyone?

As long as it's a CG render, apply the normal map as a displacement map and then use a regular bumpmap.

what do you mean apply normal as displacement? In maya they're totally separate processes, if I want displacement I'd need to set up displ. approximation node, and the object would get subdivided during rendering...

Best/quickest way might be to add the bump map into your normal map using the nvidia plugin in Photoshop.

What version of Maya and how do you have your shader setup right now?

if you're using zbrush 2 you can plug the bump map into the normal map with a plugin called zmapper. you can download it off of zbrushcentral.com or pixologic's website. the plugin's documentation describes the process in detail.
