View Full Version : Things that just won't work on WinXP x64

Don't know if anyone else had thought of this, but it's probably a good idea, at least until Vista hits and everyone is forced to make 64-bit drivers and installers. Here's what I've got so far:

Canon Digital Rebel XT Drivers
HP's 64-bit drivers (anyone care to explain that one? :p)
XIII (the videogame--pretty recent too, I was surprised.) The install only gets so far before saying "do you really want to delete all files associated with this program?" then no matter what you choose it does it anyway.
Max Payne (the sequel works just fine)
Windows Media Connect (it's the program that allows you to stream music to your Xbox360

Yep, I too was unable to get my HP inkjet to work on 64 bit windows. The thing with HP drivers amazes me, I would never have thought a renown company such as HP would allow such a mind-boggling screw-up to happen.
As for Max Payne 1, if memory serves, it didn't work on plain 32-bit XP - I only saw it running on Win 98 (think it works on 95 as well). As for X3, I'm not surprised - egosoft always seems to release half-finished games on the market, and X3 was no exception. Poorly coded, insanely hardware-demanding, buggy, and with a copy protection that makes your DVD drive just want to die, this game managed to turn me completely off in about half an hour. I'm a Sci-Fi fanatic, as such I always adored any elite-like space "sim", and am willing to forgive quite a lot to such games. But X3 was just too much screw-ups in a single product.

The original Max Payne works on regular XP I'm sure...

Itunes 6.0.5 won't install in x64, 6.0.4 is needed, but not hosted on the main site as far as I can tell.

I can't recall any other software now...although my epson perfection 610 hasn;t got drivers..or didn't - havn't looked it up for months,a lthough it was listed as never going to have support...hopefully epson has come thorugh :) I'll amend this if the drivers are there.

Edit: Nopes, will never have support for that scanner...although considering it's age, a new one is probably in order...

My scanner is not so 'verry' old (4 yrs) and HP won't be supporting any x664 drivers for it. Thanks HP!

Yeah, the HP thing pisses me off.

Max Payne and XIII both ran just fine on regular XP. XIII, I thought was a cool concept, so I was giving it every chance. I definitely agree on the coding though, I had SUCH problems with glitches, specifically during training for the grapple hook. I'd press the right key and nothing would happen. after a while of that I ended up rolling back to a previous save. Since then the grapple hook worked just fine. The equipment selection controls certainly left a lot to be desired. Max Payne I actually finished, but I might someday like to go back and do it on harder difficulty, because it sure was a beautiful game ;)

For iTunes, I was lucky and bought my iPod when 6.0.4 was still the standard. So, I have it on a disc. I'll shoot you a PM later.

Is there a printer brand you guys recommend for the x64 (sounds like HP is a no-no) I plan on buying a printer sometime soon for my x64 and I want to make sure it will work.

Valkyrien,
I assume the Itunes thign was directed at me - I did get myself a copy, it's just an extra hassel to go googling for old versions because they made a point upgrade incompatible.

EDIT: My Canon ip5000 has drivers, althougb canon was a little slow releasing them at first, but they should get props for doing that much, it's more then others.

Head on over to www.planetamd64.com despite the name it's pretty much a general x64 forum, with areas for linux x86_64 versions for example. Of course the majority of users are still windowers. You should be able to find out there some things to stay away from.

Yep, that was directed at you. Glad you got it :)

All those games that end up not installing, for the most part, dont work because of thier CD protection. The makers of these CD protection softwares you see on many games did not develop "decent" code, or put any effort in to 64bit development. Thus 64bit Windows has a hard time using them (especially if the protection schemes require some sort of system driver) X3, for example, is a game that suffers from this.

The best I can say is to avoid games with such encryption schemes. You probably wouldn't want them anyway ;)

XIII I don't care about as much as Max Payne. Man, that game was the s**t like 5 years ago :)

About the HP printers not working they do work in X64, just there isnīt an "official" driver from HP. I have been using my HP Photosmart 2710 for more than a year in x64 and everything works perfectly, even the scanner. There is a driver for most Hp printers and All-in-one in the above mentioned page (www.planetamd64.com) just register, go to the downloads page, and search in the windows drivers. IMO this modded driver works even better than the real thing running in 32bit XP, at least the installer was a lot quicker than the one from HP.

You can find a lot of workarounds and modified drivers in that web page, until now the only thing that I canīt get to work in x64 (other than some games with stupid protections like Splinter Cell) was a Belkin Usb WiFi, there were work arounds but not for my specific rev. Also I have some random problems with my Blackmagic Design Decklink HD Extreme running in x64, thatīs the only reason why I still dual boot to XP.

I wrote Zbrush an email today and I guess Zbrush doesn't work on the X64 system, either. They're working on something right now actually to fix that.

Sad, I wanted to use Zbrush on my computer....

I am in the process of speccing a new machine and have to decide on Windows 32 or 64. This is a work only machine though so games don't matter. Are all the major DCC apps working? Maya? Adobe CS? After Effects?

Maya - yes - the latest version is also a 64-bit version is it not?
PS-CS - Yes, although not 64-bit has support for the OS, and takes advantage of some of the 64-bit features, from how i understand it.
After Effects - not sure, sorry.

After Effects? Of course it works in x64, as well as most apps, only ones that donīt are as stated earlier some games (caused by copy protections) and in DCC to my mind only comes the already mentioned Zbrush. BTW the problem with Zbrush doesnīt come from the x64 but from the fact of you using 4gb in Windows, if you have less than this it will work fine, most be some sort of problem with the way Zbrush make use of the memory (which is also the problem that I have with Black Magic Design drivers with 4gb ram in x64).

That sucks for me then, I have an x64 and 4 gigs of memory. They said they are currently working on a patch (or something or other, which will be free when it's availble they told me) so I hope that comes out, soon.

I finally beat those HP drivers into submission...all it took, oddly enough was to avoid the self-extracting exe and use the "found new hardware" wizard...just told it where to find the drivers and it took care of it :P Now I can use the card reader to read pics from my Rebel XT, too :)

***Edit***
Got it to work. Maybe this is crazy, but I uninstalled MS Internet Explorer 7, and voila, Premiere Pro 1.5 Works now. Go figure.
***End Edit***

Hey folks,

I am having a heck of a time installing Premiere Pro 1.5 into my XP x64 system, although I see a whole bunch of people have been able to do it.

On install, I get a "can't install DirectX 9.0b" error (although I don't care - I have 9.0c already installed), then it hangs on the windows media 9 component. I reinstalled via safe mode, and got by all of the errors. But now when I start the program, it hangs on the splash screen. Tried installing the Premiere Pro 1.5.1 update without success - it still hangs on the splash screen.

My system:

Dell Precision 690
Dual Xeon 3.0 GHz Processors
4 GB RAM
nVidia Quadro FX 4500
Windows XP Pro x64 SP1 Running all 'latest and greatest' updates.

I'd like to try to get this running in x64 - I use Maya with some extremely hi poly count models and would like to take advantage of the x64 Operating system and the Maya 8 64 bit upgrades.

Any help will be much appreciated

Thanks, and Best Regards

i ran premiere 1.5 way back when on xp64 with no issues. 2.0 works fone as well.

adobe apps have the tendancy to be hinged on specific windows features. you probably didnt have one, or it wasnt configured in a way that the installer knew about it. ie7 prolly just straightened it out. ive never had ie7, and have had no issues with any adobe stuff (that was windows' fault) although i sometimes got the message "this program needs xp or higher" which is easy to get around.
