http://www.sheff.com/images/stories/art/lifedrawing/BodiesExhibit/SU06_Bodies01.jpg Theses are some drawings from the Bodies Exhibit at the Tropicana Hotel. Cadavers are put into poses and the water content of the body is replaced by a plasticized liquid that turns them into statues. It's a crazy exhibit.
http://www.sheff.com/images/stories/art/lifedrawing/BodiesExhibit/SU06_Bodies02.jpg It was hard to draw since I had gotten new contact lenses and people were bothering me. One japanese lady I wanted to punch her lights out.

Hey Sheff,
It's good to see you back here. :) As always it's nice to see your work.
I saw the Body Worlds Exhibit as well fairly recently in Philadelphia. It was definitely worth the visit!
One thing that I would love to see you do are more extended time frame figure drawings - I think that in some instances your facility is almost getting in the way, and it would be nice to see you explore more leisurely, expressive strokes that sort of take longer to complete - a la Carmean etc.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Cheers,
-Rebecca

I've been drawing smaller in my 8.5 x 11 sketchbook, with a 0.5 mechanical pencil, so at the moment, my focus is speed. I am trying to experiment a bit with drawing a little looser on my quick ones and spending more time on some poses. I'm also drawing all in graphite right now so there's a tendency for me to be tighter in the longer poses.
The last one is a combination of a life drawing with some photo scrap I shot that I didn't use.

I like the silhouette action in this one.
Awesome figures here. Great lineflow and the shading looks just the right way for a sketch. Trully amazing. I like the sheets filled with figures, great exercise. And a lot of done in the paintings in 1 hour (compared to what I would do in the same amount of time). I'll start a painting of my own on wednesday. Any tips you could share on painting with acrylics? Because I'm thinking of using it just like gouache, but still it's a different thing and more important, I don't really know how to use gouache too.
What more can I say, a great start of an astonishing sketchbook! :bounce:

Thanks for the compliments. With regard to acrylics, I'm not a big fan of using them exclusively. I like to use each medium to it's strength. In general, they say that acrylics are the hardest to learn because they stay wet when you want them to be dry and dry too quickly when you want them to stay wet. You can approach the use of them like you would an oil painting, painting lean to fat. Lean painting is less paint more water/medium. Painting fat is painting opaquely. However, learning acrylic is great because other mediums are easier to learn after you learn acrylic.
Gouache on the other hand, is best when used for small studies. Also, dried gouache picks up with a wet brush. This can be either an advantage, or disadvantage.
You simply need mileage to know what mediums are best to use and which ones will yield the best results. You need to learn edge control and value control. The quickest way to gain mileage is to do master copies. Do small copies in gouache, to get comfortable with controlling value and do larger copies in acrylic to become comfortable with making acrylic obey your will.
The technique I was using was transparent oil glazes over opaque acrylics. I was using acrylic for opaques because of the drying time is so much faster than opaque oil. I was using transparent oil for glazing because it lends itself to transparency so much better than transparent acrylics(at least without an airbrush). I separated the layers of oil and acrylic with Krylon Crystal Clear. Acrylic was applied with a cheap brush and oils were applied with a paper towel. My oil medium was liquin.
I hope this helps you.
Thanks for the tips and all the information. Will be very useful to me when I'll start painting. And that should be tomorrow. A great reminder to me about the small painting studies. I wanted to do these long time ago, but never made myself do it. I hope I'll find some time to do it now.
Looking forward to see more of your amazing stuff :bounce:

Thanks Rebecca. I got a Vilppu story to tell you if you PM me. That one I resorted to doing the darks with charcoal since the toned paper was so dark. I'm actually starting to dislike the toothy feel of canson.
I was looking through my cabinet and found a ream of recycled copy paper. I've started drawing on that and I like it a lot. The smoothness of the paper lends itself to the speed with which I like to draw.
Feels good to draw again for the sake of drawing.

Glad to hear you're enjoying drawing for drawing's sake. :) Am sitting in on a life drawing course this semester (both to observe the teacher and to get some drawing time in) - the good thing is that the basics that I haven't practiced in years are being reinforced, the bad thing is that there's not nearly as much sheer drawing from the model time as I would like. Don't know what it is exactly, but there is just nothing quite like life drawing.
Good to see your work, definitely post more. I sent you a pm as I am curious about your Vilppu story, ha.
I'm curious about that story too! Will I hear it? C'mon, I believe it's interesting to a lot of people here, since they've seen the work of this master or read his books, watched his videos.
Can't even tell how much I like your drawings, the style of it. Post loads more, please :scream:

Hi guys,
If you're looking for tips, etc., I have an instruction section (http://www.sheff.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=7&Itemid=41) on my website. There might be some resources there that might be helpful to you.

Hope this helps.
The sylabi that you posted are good. Judging from the emphasis on completing the homework it must be irritating to be a teacher at times. I wonder how you keep your A game for hard working students, when dealing with that.
I like the figure drawing homework that you laid out, makes a lot of sense and expands on something that Becca mentioned awhile back. Seems like a great way to develop your eye at the same time as getting exposure to a lot of great artists. Thanks for the link.

Anyhow, I'm trying out this watersoluble pencil. I bought them years ago, but I never used them beyond a project I got them for. I'm going to try them out on this new pad of paper. When drawing with them, the pencil just glides. The act of drawing feels very sexy on this yupo paper. I have yet to test it with prisma and turp, but I believe it will yield interesting results as well.
Anyway, below are some drawings and imaginative drawings based off the poses, before I apply any water.

I didn't get around to 'waterfying' that last batch of drawings, but I thought I would experiment with a big brush and some ink. These are done on 11 x 14 with a fat bamboo brush.

http://www.sheff.com/images/stories/art/lifedrawing/Males/WI07_Paul003.jpg
This last one a student asked me about why proportion is important. So I did this drawing purposely disregarding proportion. For this, I switched to an ink pen. I actually like how it turned out though.

Heya Sheff,
This is a great batch! Love the brush pen ones especially, I think those are the most expressive ones of yours I've seen yet and probably my favorite.
I've been trying out drawing with Berol Prismacolors lately and really loving it. You know, I've spent so much time drawing large on newsprint for so many years that I've sort of neglected drawing small in a sketchbook except on occasion. It's really been refreshing to draw with the Prismas. However I have a question for you - how do you recommend sharpening them? When I used them as a kid, I'd sharpen them with one of those little silver sharpeneners, but now I'm sharpening them in the same AC way as I sharpen charcoal pencils, with an exacto and sandpaper pad - and liking the results. I was curious to know how you sharpen your Prismas. :)

I have 2 of these electric pencil sharpeners. The reason I like the Panasonic is that the angle at which it sharpens reveals a good amount of lead.
http://www.temple.edu/instituteondisabilities/atlend/news/feb99/media/286161_Std.jpg
I will bring one to school/work and leave it in my car. The other one I leave in my studio.
Do NOT buy this one. This is the worst pencil sharpener. If ever you have a situation where the lead break inside the sharpener itself, it's almost impossible to get out. I have taken this thing apart and put it back together many many times. There is nothing worse than having this POS wreck whatever drawing rhthym you might have built up by constantly malfunctioning.
http://www.overcost.com/images/Standard/XQX00096.JPG
I haven't experimented with other brands of electric pencil sharpeners, but I generally look to see the lead angle and how much of the flat part is exposed. I've used Boston and they're okay.
After experimenting on YUPO, I'm pretty comfortable with giving up on the turpenoid prisma thing. I'd like to avoid chemicals if I can and the YUPO water pencil gives me the same feeling of freedom and looseness that I like. In other words, I can be tight and then loosen up later at my discretion. The only bad thing about YUPO is that it's so expensive.
In a pinch, I will sharpen prismas with an OLFA rather than a X-acto. Once you try an OLFA, you'll never go back to X-acto. At an art store, OLFA's go for about $6.38 and up. At Home Depot or JoAnn's, you can find the same or similar knife that uses the break-off blades for $1.50.
I don't use a sanding pad except for doing a graphite demo ala Chris Polenz(dont' know if you had him for rendering) with an Ebony pencil. I prefer to go the very back of my newsprint pads and use those last pages as a sanding pad. The texture of the cardboard comes up through those pages, so I never draw on them to begin with. It's much easier and cleaner than carrying a loaded charcoal sanding pad around.
Have you experimented with putting Canson through photocopiers? This is a method I've shown students that's great for figureative work as well as tech looking stuff.

Sheff,
Thanks for the great advice! :) I have a decent electric sharpener but have not used it to sharpen prismas. I'll try it though when I get back home.
Haven't tried the photocopier method in ages, but it sounds like fun. :) Thanks for the great tips!

More 20's. Not as crazy about these. Ran out of the hot press and had to do these on coldpress.

Not bad. I wasn't even looking for clients, but an old one called with an assignment, which I just got done. Expecting the second baby this week. I'm going to start working on some fine art paintings. Other than that, all is well. Just waiting for the kid to be born is nerve wracking. Vilppu is coming to do a workshop this week as well. I don't know if I will be able to go. Also, I dropped in on a faculty meeting, for the free food of course, and I found out they've created a new class and I'm probably going to end up teaching it. So I guess I'm not fully out of teaching, but I'll just have to see how all this plays out.
How's teaching in real life now for you?

Sounds like a lot is going on - congrats on the new baby! :) That must be crazy. Do you know yet whether it will be a girl or a boy?
Teaching is going well, I'm really enjoying the flexible schedule and my ability to just do *art*. It's taken a bit to get things going, but I'm actually pretty happy with how things are moving along. If you're interested, you can check out some of my demos and some of my students' work on my teaching blog (link in signature). It's been nice to teach a variety of age groups, I have mainly high school and college students, but a few younger students and have picked up an adult class, which has turned out to be fun. All in all, I'm pretty happy and am grateful that I've been able to stitch everything together so far.
I was in Vilppu's class for a bit, then decided to quit for a while since it was quite a drive, but will hopefully pick it up again when he starts teaching here again. It's amazing to me how much energy he still has after all of these years. I think that says a lot for doing what you enjoy. :)

@ Rebekka - It's a boy. And he's due tomorrow, but Alison isn't having any contractions yet. If nothing happens in the next few days, we're scheduled to induce on Monday. As luck would have it, Vilppu is Friday, so I'm not sure what's going to happen. Alison says I can go, because she doesn't feel like anything will happen till the weekend if anything. Our little girl was 8 days late, so maybe he's on Filipino time.
@ Kroman - Thanks! I take year long breaks from drawing. I sometimes draw in the classes when other instructors are teaching and sometimes I draw in the open workshop, it depends on my mood. I really only draw if I have a specific goal in mind. Lately I've started drawing with a new Meetup group. I'm drawing at the Beverly showroom, in the World Market Center here in Vegas. It's a really nice environment, kind of like the Pacific Design Center(The Blue Whale) in LA. They're still working the kinks out, but it should pick up quite a bit. Currently, it's only once a month, but again, I'm drawing there because it's more directly beneficial to me than it is drawing at the school.

In our school there is a problem with making sketches... There is also lack of groups like that you've mentioned. And if there are some, they are focused on study not even the anatomy but just a... body. Many people in my school, simply can't draw! I don't know why, but many of them thinks that sketches aren't needed to learn to draw, they think that if they spend 8 hours on one drawing and it will be like from a photo it is awsome.. But later, watching it closely, can see anatomic mistakes.
I wonder what is the level of people's skills in your school? Are they as great as you? If yes I ENVY you!

@ Kroman - I am/was a teacher of life drawing at our school. Some of the other instructors are at the same level as me.
Many of the students are getting much better. They are definitely better than when I started teaching four years ago. I was drawing tonight and saw a lot of really good kids.
@ Rebekka - I met Vilppu tonight. I probably won't go to the workshop tomorrow. Since Alison is so close, I really can't see what I have to gain from it. I'll decide for certain in the morning.

Alison still hasn't gone into labor. So I was able to go to the Vilppu workshop after all.
Some threes and fives. I didn't really get to do much other than warm-up a little bit. Three hours isn't much time to squeeze in any drawings longer than that. I would have liked to have done longer poses. I'm kind of getting tired of drawing such short poses.
