View Full Version : Is Core 2 Duo stable for current motherboards?
IntoTheMango 09-05-2006, 03:28 AM hi everyone currently iam going to upgrade my ancient workstation to a newer one, for the CPU I may choose core2duo E6600, but people kept telling me core2duo cpus freeze quite a lot due to the motherboards, so its better to wait for a month until more stable motherboards come out, is it true?
I also consider getting quadro fx1500, but still i think the price is too high for me, can anyuone suggest a good performance card (apart from quadro series) price range between $300~$500??
(i mainly use this computer for CAID modelling, animation and texturing maya plus 3d renderings)

If you are worried about stability, get the intel 975xbx badaxe. It's the most stable out of the current crop of available boards, mainly because it was used for the development of conroe. It's not cheap though...especially because people keep selling their other motherboards and buying the badaxe.
This isn't an overclockers motherboard though. It does have some tweaking abilities (way more then the average intel motherboard), but it will limit your overall ceiling, unless you want to go hardcore.

Newegg now has these (rev 305).

Wow they keep raising the price...I got mine for around 220 =/.
It's also VERY important to get an extremely high quality psu for conroe. Conroe's are just like X2's and Opterons...if you skimp on the psu or ram, you're going to pay for it in stability.
So far the only crash I've had with my conroe is when I was trying to get over a 1 ghz overclock on it. Since I calmed down, and got it to a stable hertz, it hasn't had so much of a burp of instability.
In fact the E6700 I just built for dna and phelongy analysis for the dept passed a 120 hour dual prime95 stability test at 3.2 ghz. (Thats two prime95's, one on each core, one set to max ram use, one set to max heat/power use).
