View Full Version : Blizzard Art Contest: starcraft 3d environment
Matroskin 09-04-2006, 11:56 PM Hi everyone,
I am working on my submission for Blizzard Art contest and I decided to take "starcraft 3d environment"
I want to make a replication of Reaver (with Scarab Drones, all 5 ;) ). Cause I just love protoss :)
It is slow, heavily protected and deadly if it launches it's drones. It needs to stop in order to fire Drones. For this purpose it opens :) like self-propelled guns of ww2 :)
I do it mainly for my portfolio, so I'll add it's animation later on, but for contest I could post only still images.
I'm at 4978 tris.

ok, here is more progress.
I finished modeling and gone for texturing :)
Almost finished front part and side shields. Still need to draw stuff for rear parts and interior.
I also added some subtle dirt on side shields, just to see what it gives in terms of starCraft style. Well, I guess it fits it :) Gonna add more of it a bit everywhere ;)
Render is made with simple GI setup. The reason it is not in realtime is that I`ll bake GI effect into texture itself (and reduce it`s darkness for interior parts, otherwice it won`t be beleivable when Reaver opens).
I already did a test for it and figured out that it works good!
Generally, I was referring a lot to those rare screenshots of SC Ghost that r available on e-net, so I hope I am close to in-game style.
What do u think?

ah, btw, final result gonna be diffuse, illumination and bump. I hope to have time to make specular as well (which i`ll do anyways, just not sure if will be in time for contest)
* I applied some temporary self-illumination map here to make lights more bright in shaded zones.

I really like the textures you got there. They add a good since of depth, structure, and illumination.

thanks Mind Traveler.
Yep, that what i aim for - to have visible sence of depth with no matter what kind of lightning in the scene.

ok, finaly here is my final submission for the contest.
Later I`ll post all texture channels, since there r diffuse, bump, specular and self-illumination used.
Render is made without global illumination solution; however, subtle effect of it was baked into the texture.

Now the funniest thing :) I AM NOT SURE IF I SUBMITTED IT SUCCESSFULLY :)
As many of u know, blizzard`s site was almost unfunctional at least from Sunday noon.
I got that submission page several times, but did not succeesd in getting the confirmation.
However, i like what i did, and I got pleasure doing this model.
All kinds of critics r welcome ;)

Awesome man. I think this is a really really strong project (love the battle mode). Great work. Did you put the polycount on your final submission and did you get in in general? I heard alot of people where having issues with submitting their work.
None the less ... great work!

thanks guys:)
yep, I did put polycount in "comments" section (which is 5066 tris).
and I received confirmation email, but it was send Monday morning, so I am not sure it that was just automatic responce, but I am not accepted because of late submission, or it means that I am really accepted...
gonna see how it turns out

so, I`m happy - finally my submission is accepted :) !
Btw, they extended deadline till 20th due to tech problems ;)
here i got couple of wips.
Tesxtures (originally they r 2048, since no limitations were mentioned, but they work fine in 1024).
Diffuse, bump, specular (not very accurate, cause was done in huge rush, but still works not bad I think;) ) and self-illumination.
Plus a view of interior of Reaver.

Tahnks, El_Pube.
I don`t htink so. It was initiative of some people to post works on cgtalk.
But I hope Blizzard will make some kind of gallery of submissions later on.

Wow, great work! Are you in Maya? If so, can you tell me how to plug in the self illumination stuff in a shader (irradiance channel???)?
Cheers

hi guys !
thanks, cool u like it :)
dbsmith - nope, I`m in max. Although, I don`t know exactly material setup in maya, but in max u have self-illumination channel (like for bump, transparency etc.). In that channel u put an image created in some painting app and that`s all. So, black - no self illumination, white or other bright color - self-illum. using that color, plus everything in-between. I guess in maya it should be similar thing.
