Because of the phong angle, the angle along the edges it low enough so that it doesn't break the phong shading and it smooths around there. you can either a) select the phong tag and change the tolerance angle till the edges are correctly broken, or b) use my free phong select plugin to select the sharp edges on your model (or manually select them), and choose "break phong shading" from the rmb menu on the object or from (from memory) the functions or structure menu (can't remember off hand which).

i dont belive its all the phong, been messing around see if i get the right result but still....
those curves on the "E" are not from light errors

you have HN weights set on some of the points, which are pulling the mesh and create those strange creases.
