Hi there..
this is a characer which im using in my implementation for my thesis at Uni.
He's supposed to be an elf, but ended up looking more like a greek warrior instead.

base mesh created in Silo
displacement in ZB
render in maya

stil have a ways to go, and have begun texturing now...

Very Nice Modeling and details!

i don't know if it's due to the view, but the thigh seems really fat and the foot a little bit too small.

Look really nice! But his legs seems too short

VERY Impressive work. The work without any texture is just GREAT. I can't wait to see the one textured + light.

How many hours of work it took ?

Thanks for the comments guys.

about the legs... according to my reference, and measurements, they are the correct size and shape... perhaps its the angle that is giving the illusion? i try to be very well versed in anatomy... but thanks anyway.

i am workng on the skin textures now... will have another progress shot soon.

Nice work man! I really dig the attention to detail, especially on the breast plate. I can't wait to see it fully textured.

I'm featuring your work on The 3dBuzz's The Daily News. Sept 4th edition.

Awesomeness.

Looks nice man, really love the detail. Couple little things, might want to make his hips a little more narrow, lengthen his legs, and maybe make his calf muscles a littel more thick, right now they don't seem to be even as thick as his arms. Keep it up, looking great

here is an update of the skin texturing... still needs some work, and there are no spec maps here.

Good work so far.

I have to agree with the others regarding the legs. Perhaps you could lessen the mass in the legs to make them look longer. As of right now, they seem too short.

awesome work there!
great base modeling and great detailing.
very promising start on the shader as well.

his legs do look awkward, but I don't think it's a mistake; those bodybuilder guys really look like that LOL :D

i'd lose the elf ears, they look totally out of place imo, this guy doesn't look like an elf at all

Baker17
09-05-2006, 11:05 PM
@ jedi-juice - about the legs again... i agree that around the knee area could lose some of the width it has at the moment, but the general shape and mass is how someone of his muscle mass is built... im kinda sorry this looks akward, but check out some body builders reference photos you will see what i mean. thank you for the comment though.

@philip - thank you for the comment, and yea, the definitly are built like that... all the bodybuilding mags i've looked at for reference... some of those guys are just plain scary! :0

@ third-eye - i agree about the ears, and have considered making the helmet more full before i texture it... ie. covering the ears, like a traditional greek style helmet...

thanks for the feedback though guys.. i will be tightening up the legs especially around the knee area. but i really believe they are the right length.

This looks awesome, I agree the legs should be longer, or mass reduced. Though I say you should keep the ears, elfs don't have to be fragile peoples ya know. :)

Nice work.

Could we have wire of the guy and armour?

By the way, did you modelised the armor decorations (lion, etc...) ot it's displacment.

Baker17

here are some wires...

@ dagann - the detailing was all sculpted in ZB, some using alpha's which i made... but its rendered with displacement in maya. thanks man.

corinthian style influence on the design... so now he's more a greek soldier than anything... gonna be crankin out the textures for everything now!

Looking good, the shin armor rope needs to be tighter around the calve muscle, no?

dagann
09-07-2006, 02:44 PM
Thanks for the wire. It's nice.

yes it's really looking more like a greeksoldier than a elve.
But this is a fantastic greek soldier, not historic.

tha'ta a very impressive work.

I can't wait to see it complete.

I love the style on this character, the whole old school armor and helm work great :D My only suggestion is to brighten up the scene, the lights are too dim and don't really help us see the texturing on the armor. Take him outside for some fresh air ;)

hey guys... another small update... we've had leave, so havn't been working on him full on, and also started my next character for my reel too... she will be revealed soon enough ;)
but some of the textures and materials still need work... esp the leather straps on his skirt... looking too plastic at the moment... so more to come.

The scabbard is a bit too clean.

Hi all...

long time no post on this guy.. took a break from him for a while, to start another character for my reel... and now getting back to this guy... need to decide on a background for the reel, and also what he's standing on... got a few ideas... but any suggestions?

still got some work on the fine tuning of everything... but nearly there!

Firstly, it's very impressive! But one thing bugs me, the sandal on his left foot (from the angle of your most recent post) looks really loose - like he could just step out of it...?

Baker17
10-01-2006, 11:09 AM
lol... yea, thats a bit of that fine tuning i was talking about... good spotting! :)

Baker17

does anyone have any suggestions for the BG? or any good links to some nice roman wall textures? that was a suggestion over at ZBcentral. :)

Another upodate... built his stand now to get with the finishing touches. tried a composite render here with a z map and ao... but render needs more refinement. :)

Love it!

I would may be put one or tow arrows in the ground, and why not adding him a shield?

NyneDown

Nice character man, putting him in a solid strong pose will definitely sell this model. From what I've read, everyone pretty much already pointed out the minor critiques and what not...so no use in me reiterating them again. For the background, I'd have something with 50% gray in it so it'll make those textures pop more so then they already do. Keep it up...it's lookin' fantastical ;)

btw, are you using SSS or any other skin shader...or are all of your skin textures strictly hand painted?!? I'm really liking the softness of his skin...haha

Baker17
10-08-2006, 10:28 PM
@daggan - thanks for your comment! much appreciated!

@Nynedown - i'm using the MiSSS shader, for mentalray and i do paint my textures in Zbrush. im quite fond of this pose... i think its grown on me... a sort of pre-battle, just drawn his sword type pose... so im not sure i will change it... but thank you for your feedback... perhaps he could use a little more dynamic in it....

NyneDown
10-08-2006, 10:50 PM
You're welcome...even just putting his hand on the sword case (cant think of the technical term of it), would add a little more to the final product. It's already a very strong piece, IMO, so it's no biggie really.

Thanx for sharing how you approach the texture setup!

SeanJM
10-09-2006, 01:16 AM
Very nice. It is very clean. Could use a bit of dinging up... unless of course his armor is freshly made. It would give it a dynamic to pose him very dramatically. Perhaps coming at you, gritting his teeth and holding his sword menacingly.

Baker17
10-21-2006, 03:03 AM
ok... so this is his last transformation.. i swear! he's now officially roman!
still got some refinement on the shading, and some area's still need texture, and some geometry needs to be placed still. hope you like the NEW soldier. won't be too long until he's complete

alright! great to see kiwis on here!
man if i can be totaly honest with you, i prefer the armor of the second to last image more than the latest one. BUT that is just one untrained eyes opinion, i just thought id put it out there ;)

where are you studying? down here at CPIT we've had notices up everywhere saying WETA is recruiting a whole bunch of peeps for modeling, texturing, lighting, compositing etc...they're looking for graduates i guess. Im hoping you've heard about it too becaue i think you got a great chance! you should send in your reel asap, that is ofcourse if you WANT to work there...

anyway, good luck with everything, are you in your final year?
