Thank you sir but sorry for me because I said it in a wrong statement. What I like to know is how did he do the layers in the render layers. Sir do you have any idea how to make the fog layer? And how can you composite the shadow layer in AFX? Thanks in advance for the reply...

Funny, the avi played fine on my mac. Maybe you don't have the right plug-ins. Try "flip for Mac" or if that don't work get the vlc player.

ssebastienn your demo reel is awesome. I agree with Ville it belongs on the front page.

I use the VLC player and it plays some QuickTime movies more smoothly than Apple's own QuickTime player on my old out of date Mac, so I'll second the recommendation.

This thread is an inspiration.

When you have all your layers rendered (for instance, your Color Pass, Ambient Occlusion Pass, etc) you could try to blend them together by multiplying, overlaying (etc…) them in After Effect.
As for the fog layer, what I do is render a ZDepth Pass (that displays pixel that are near the camera in white and pixels that are away from the camera in black). Then with this black and white image, you setup your favorite compositing software to interpret what’s in black as foggy environment, and what’s white as non-foggy! :o)

Wow what a nice trick in making the fog. I thought you used the built-in fog on lights in maya. I didn't knew that.hehe One thing that also confusing me, is your volumelight layer literally a scene with volume light/s with fog on in it?

Done in Maya and rendered Maya Default Software Renderer (Wow its so fast).
Sir, I think the famous GI Joe mel script is a good treatment in faking GI in outdoor scenes.
I used it here in this scene and it was great...

I wish i could ask some more explaination about the fake Gi. I am sorry, i did not understand every thing ^^

How exactly do you use your occlusion pass to light so well the final image? Dont get this result in home ! héhé. Did you used combustion special capacity or is it also simple in photoshop or else? Maybe you can explain in french i'll get better ;)

Yeah how did Mr. Sebastien do the zDepth pass? Recently I asked Mr. Laban how did he do the Fog Pass in his scene and he replied that he used a zDepth to simulate the fog and I'm amazed that it was a good technique. In my sample scene, experimented something and I think its not bad. In a render layer, I put a preset called Luminance Depth (in my version of Maya 8.5 has it, I don't know if there's in Maya 7.0 and 8.0), then I set the camera's DOF to somewhere I'd like to be focused and to be blurred and finally rendered the image. Here is an example...

Then I exported the pass in Photoshop and made it as a layer mask. I just inverted the image because I think it's better to have focus on the floor. If this trick worked in PS, it might also work in AE or Combustion.
It was just an accident on finding how to render a zDepth pass. I just played around and look if there's an alternative and I think it was a good faked one. Tnx...

Sir just want to clear it out if you're pertaining to me or to Mr. Sebastien? Just a little bit confused. But to help you out in faking GI what I've done was I downloaded a MEL Script called GI_Joe. You can search it on the net to download it. Executing the script will tell you that how many lights will it produce. I dont know if the script I downloaded was the very recent but in my case the script gave me options to add 16x2 lights or 64x2 lights in a dome appearance. For example, the upper part (skylight) has 16 lights that cast soft depth map shadows while the lower part (groundlight) has 16 lights also without casting shadows but brightens out the scene. In my case I turned off the shadows in the skylight because the result was not good. I just tweak all the lights to my desired illumination and added another light to with shadow simulate the sun. May it be a directional light or spot light. Then the AmbOcc was the one who detailed the scene and casted the soft shadow. I was lucky that Mr. Sebastien had thought me on how to control AO in Maya using MentalRay and all the credit was to him. Sorry I dont speak in French for me to help you but I hope you understand.

Hey everyone! :o)

Big update today, as we are proud to show you the second character of our short film.
It's a little creature nicknamed "Chaussette" (french for “sock”).

Rendered in Maya Software, the fur is made with “Maya Hair”. I’ve created 7 hairNodes (one for the tail, head, body, moustache etc…).

For my creature/animal, I first tried "MAYA FUR", then I tested "MAYA HAIR" for one day. I returned to " MAYA FUR", but kept thinking about where I was able to bring "MAYA HAIR"... so given the constraint of my shortfilm, I finally came back to "MAYA HAIR" and made everything with it. :)

It takes about 40 seconds to render 1 frame.

Chaussette is a mixture of a squirrel, a mouse, a rat, and a pika :)

Great animation for the beast ! You have very good capabilities !
To my mind, you don't need animator for the next. Just do it by yourself and you'll keep your precious style for the short. That's for sure.

awesome man! i love the hair setup, it makes the model look way nicer and more complicated than it really is! the model looks alot more diffrent than i pictured it from the other images lol.

and i looked at ur website...as i havent worked on a full fledged animated movie, i was wondering some stuff..how do u put those glowy effect on ur renders where the light falls with high intensity.i mean do u render it or render it in another pass and composite it or do the glow in the compositing software itself....cuz i think the glow shaders increase the render times very high and its not quite possible for me at least to render complete animated sequences with all that stuff...im asking this as im not into much compositing stuff and it wud be great to learn how its actually done with deadlines other issues popping in...

Your pulling off great looking results with such low-polygon counts. It's very impressive, and I'm impressed with how consistant you are with your style. I would have problems making so many 3D assets feel like they belong together.

I tried to model the base mesh as simple as possible (just the main curve) and sculpt the final shape with the hair/fur.
I’ll try to post some screenshots of different setup I’ve done in Maya later.

01 | we're working on the the final render of the main/first sequence (our film will by "cut" in four parts) with all the meshes with there textures!
02 | we're also doing some finishing touches on the Meline Character! I've done a little animation of her, playing with the orange butterfly ! :o) I cant't wait to show you that !!! :p

We might start the production of the first shot very soon (This month or the month after :)

With Mental Ray? Sure you can make FinalGather/SSS/Occlusion very easily on a very simple scene, but when you work on a little more complex scene with things that interacts with other things that is animated with that, and you have to do render passes of your animation etc............. that's something TOTALLY different...:eek:

... unless, of course, you have 10 programmers working on your issue!...

I'm trying to render an OBJECT_1 , with some part behind another OBJECT_2 that has a USEBACKGROUND shader applied to it. (So that there is a mask of the OBJECT_2 on the OBJECT_1)...
That, that works...
BUT ! ... I would like to disable OBJECT_2 from the finalGather computation (so that there is no finalGatherShadows on the OBJECT_1, made by the OBJECT_2).

I tried the "finalGather Cast" option under the "metalRay tab" of the "ObjectShapde Node"... of course that didn't work... Maybe i have forgoten another step...

So, How do I tell an object that it should stay out of the finalGather Computation. :)

Unfortunately I don't know anything about Maya, but I worked on something similar in 3dsMax recently. I would imagine Maya also supports features such as calculating finalGather solutions and freezing them after? I simply hid the object I didn't want in my finalGather computation, saved the finalGather map, froze it (set to read-only), unhid the object again and re-rendered the image.
I don't know if this applicable to Maya too or if I have misunderstood what you are attempting to do :)

Anyway, stunning work! I have been watching your thread for quite some time now and am amazed! :)

Hi,

First of all, it's amazing to see how this short developes in front of our eyes.

Second, Mental Ray is a very flexible rendering engine, that is not as complicated as it may look. You should visit MyMentalRay.com there are plenty of informations about shaders, optimizations, etc.

I myself working in XSI, and it utilizes MR as its core rendering engine, so every object in a scene has properties connected to MR, like rendering visibilities, for example Shadow Caster/Reciever, FinalGather Caster/Reciever/Visible in Samples, etc. Maybe there are similar properties in Maya?

About optimization I found an excellent document about the BSP, it helped me a lot, my render time went down from 3 hours to few minutes. This is here (http://www.bernardlebel.com/wiki/index.php/3D:XSI_tutorials:BSP_Explained_To_Artists)

As for my issue, it seems like I found my way out by messing around with the TRACE+SHADOWS MentalRay flags of my object! Indeed, I need to set both of them to "No" (I don't really know why I have to set "Shadows" to "No" too since i'm not using any light.. just final gather... :) if anyone here has an explanation, i'd love to hear it! maybe the awnser is at mymentalray.com :o)

We've been quite busy this month working on something else!
But, I told you that I made an animation of Meline playing with the butterfly ... so here it is! :)

(right-click on the image, then choose "Save Target as...")

With this animation, when Meline is doing some sudden/fast/quick moves, we were able to tweak the cloth and hair dynamic settings and also find the character of Meline (how she moves etc)! :o)

wow wow wow that really is coming together nicely! My only comment with that animation (and I am aware its still in a test stage for you) is the camera seems a bit too wandering so it seemed to affect the viewing of some of Meline's animation but still looks bloody fantastic! She definitely looks cute and playful in the sequence!

I'm not gonna dive up this project! :o) it's too much fun! So many interresting things to do, to try! Even though I animated that test shot, I really feel that I need an true animator. It's such a complexe and important job, to give Meline a cute character etc. We have so much this to do aside :o)

hey,
i reeeally like the test animation. not only does she move like a little girl, she also "thinks" like a little girl. you can almost feel her thoughts while watching this and that's what makes the character alive! i love the reaction when the butterfly escapes her hands.. really believable! keep on the good work you two!
can't wait for this movie to be finished.. looking great! :applause:

the animation is looking great so far. my one big crit is that
it lookes like the animation is too fast. maybe 2 times the speed it should be.

Just a quick note to inform you that we are still working on "Meline" ! :o)
We've been extremely busy this past 2 or 3 weeks as we moved from one place to another (in our real life :)) As you can imagine, there are a lots of papers to take care of! :o)

We've been working on the introduction shot, that takes place in a separated set from the main set! :o)

I was looking at Meline's cloth test and I have to ask if you "enveloped" (XSI equivalent to Maya skinning) the bones to the cloth, and paint the weight or you just let the cloth go along for the ride using the body for collision? because I am trying to figure out what i am doing wrong...

Great news guys!

Just so you know, we may have found our animator. He is a guy I used to work with, who is an animator by profession.

We invited him yesterday, and he saw the complete Previsualisation, some test animations of Chaussette and Meline, the almost complete render of the Introduction Shot, and the WIP render of the interior of the barn set.

He was very impressed by the look, renders and feel the film is having right now and he definitely wants to work on the project with us. The day after, he told us, that when he got back to his house, he was so eager to animated Meline, that he already tried animating her, trying to feel the character! :)

So lets cross our finger so that he has the time to share its talented animation skill with us! :p

Sounds like a sweet deal...i have been working on the cloth of my character and i have been using the lowest subdivision to get good calculations....and I love the results...

And congrats on getting another animator... i will keep watching this thread...

Of course, these renders are still a work in progress. The title is temporary, Meline is not animated, Some color correction/tweak has to be done... but that's pretty much what we are aiming for! :)

This weekend, we've printed a lot of concept sketches, test renders, the entire storyboard etc and started pinning them all over the room again! :o) ... I'll take a picture of our Meline Room, it's quite nice! :o)

Can you explain your modeling issue for the big tree? Did you use zbrush for it ?
Did you use paint effects for the leaves?
And what about the background? matte painting with photos or full 3D ?

But to answer your question, I didn’t use any Zbrush or stuff like that, I don’t really need to. That would have been way to much time/cpu consuming :o)
The leaves of the big tree are first done with PaintEffects, then converted to polymesh to have a great sens of volume with correct shadows etc :o)
And the background is a mixture of matte painting and 3D models! :o)

Three years after seeing your student project you're still the best lighter (who uses comping at it's optimum) I've ever seen, I have only seen a handful few who were close but still not good enough. Love your screenshots but I noticed one thing, Meline is blending too much with the background color, not her clothes but her skin, your early tests made her more lively with redish/blushed skin, either that or maybe the animation will speak louder than that (I might probably get hanged or imapled for saying this especially since you guys are more experienced :) ).

I honestly admire your commitment I sarted working nearly a year ago in the industry and when i come back home I don't have the energy to work on my personal projects how do you guys pull it off?.

How do you distribute the paint FX on tree? You paint right over trunk geometry? Or on hidden live object? Or any other technique?

OMG so much! are the leaves copied and pasted all over the place or what? is the grass hair? why is the butterfly the only thing colored? how long did the tree and house take? great use of focal blur! what was intended with the black area in the third image of the second image? so the trees in the background of the shed is an image? what did you do for textures? about the setup of the room, how did you map out the setup, was it all just "i think this should go here" or did you have it pre determined? do you use only maya and phoroshop?

sorry for all the questions, its just that when i see wired frames alotta thoughts pop up ;P. and oh yeah my grades are doing good, i'm not letting my mom win this one!

Great stuff, you really have a nack for being one of those few people who are jack of all trades at everything!! I'm working on my character right now in 3ds max. I see that your using Maya. Their cloth simulators are nearly the same. I was wondering how you want about doing your cloth on her dress. Did you model it then simulate it, or did you use splines and garment maker then simulate it?

I place a dummy that roughly has the shape i'm trying to get, then I PFX some branches and leaves on it. Then i Hid the dummy :o)

Isiac, I'll answer the question not in order :)
The grass is made with paint effects, The butterfly is the only thing colored just to make the preview more interesting. The tree was modeled/textured in like 2 or 3 day, the barn 1 day. The black area is Something that is not modeled yet :) Every objects is placed according to the previs that we've done (we have the complete film done in a previz formet :)
I'll post more pictures that will answer more you questions :)

It goes like this :

I though I could give, for those who are interested, a little update! :o)

Don't look for any picture right now, since every thing is very wip, but I want to tell you that I've wrote a little script (thanks to the "Echo All commands" feature within Maya and NelsonTeixeira) that helps us a lot in our production!!! :)
It's a script that sets up, in one click, every pass render that will be required in compositing!!! :o)

It will probably sound dumb, but Scripting, for some of you that might be afraid of it, is such a powerful thing, even though like I do, you don't know much about it :)
You can learn a lot by using the "Echo All Commands" in the [Script Editor], menu "History" ! For example, create a cube, move it in space, then assign a map to it and see what Maya did, what kind of command Maya used! :)

That's how I started scripting, looking at the history lines and saving to the shelf... just amazing!! Even if you don't intend to be a scripter guy (or girl! :)), like me. It's really worth learning a tiny bit of MEL.
By the way, in Brazil MEL means honey. And MEL makes our 3d lifes a lot more sweet!! :D

Truly amazing workl, i remember comming upon your thread a couple of months ago and then i couldn't find it till yesterday i stumbled upon it again, and all i can say is truly amazing work and progress since i last saw the thread, im speachless. Your texturing and lighting and modeling is all superb! I really cant wait to see more.

Have to agree with you with the MEL scripting its super powerfull and command line rendering is also amazingly helpfull when rendering multiple scene files and an assortment of frames.

yeah the lighting really is tasty - I think what works so well is that really lush almost lime green in the grass - it contrasts really nicely with the interior environment.
great work - itching to see more (really must do some more work on my character animation too!)

Hi!
I'm having a little issue with the Maya Character feature.

I have a scene that contains my character (body.mb).
I've created a clip in the "Trax Editor" and exported it.

I have another scene "hair.mb" that contains my file "body.mb" imported as a reference.
I import my previously-exported-clip to my character (body_character)

=> My character reads every "translation, rotation, scale" values of my clip, exept the values of the Blendshape node.

(note : In my original "body.mb", when I re-import the clip to my character, the blendshape are properly imported.)

So my question is : Does the "blendshape node" works with a "Maya Character" imported as a reference?

I should say first that I've only browsed through the last few pages of this, and it's beautiful, all of it, great job so far.

Tiny problem with the animation, though, she looks too fast, like she doesn't have a lot of mass or something. Her movements seem a bit too 'snap-to-a-stop'-ish. I don't know if that makes sense.

Anyway, the rest of it looks wonderful, so keep up the good work.

Hi Sebastien,

As far as I know and, as a matter of fact, my quick tests showed me. BlendShapes work fine on imported or referenced scenes. And if it does´t work, what would be the point of referecing, isn´t??. First thing that came to my mind was the possibility you had forgotten to add the blendShape node to the character set, but if thing work fine when you´re only importing to the scene, it must be something else.

I hired a model, a studio, some lighting equipment and shot every thing with an HD Camera!
That was such a fun experience to do! From the very pre-production with the research, making some lighting plots etc, to the final compositing, and through directing the model and placing the physical lights and other setups! : AMAZING EXPERIENCE! :p :p :p

Hey, I've been quietly following this project as I absolutely adore the cute little girl, but also I think your work (both of you) is really awesome. I have one question concerning your workflow which been bugging me for a while now. If you don't mind could you explain just quickly (if it's not confidential :P) what you do at the Integration, Pre-rendering, pre-editing and 3D layout stages?
I've been comparing different workflow methods for my own projects and try to create one that fits me and my needs, and the more info I have the better I can make it.

In the Integration part, what I do is put every elements together (like Characters, Sets, Background, Fur, and other PaintFX stuff) … so that the setup of the scene is done and the the shot is ready to be render (And when there is a new version of the animation of the girl, for instance, I don ‘t have to setup the whole scene again, I just change the clip in the "Trax Editor" and everything will be setup properly.) :)

In the Pre-Editing part, I make a rough edit of the complete shortfilm, with testRender shots, final shots, and Previz footage. I also have a soundtrack, with basic sounds like footsteps, and other foley noises.

The Pre-Rendering step is just some test renders. I use it as a sketch book for 3D elements. I can easily see what technology will work during the complete shortfilm, and what won’t. That step is also used to check what kind of layers the compositing will require.

The 3D Layout step is a little more than a story-board. It’s the entire short-film in 3D, but with very lowres models of the characters and sets, and very simple animations. It’s there to validate the cameras, compositions, timing etc…

I don’t think it’s necessary for 2 reasons.
1 - We are only working on 2 laptops. I think that speaks for itself :)
2 - Most important : It’s not the HD format that will make the film itself better. It’s not the HD format that will make "Jaws" scarier, It’s not the HD format that will makes the end of "The Shawshank Redemption" even better. :)

Wow I've been here quite sometime and the film gets better and better. Just a quickie question. I'm just curious about the specs of your laptops because I'm surprised that you can do things like this in your equipment. You know, desktops are more powerful than laptops in 3D things but for you 2, you've changed it. I was a Maya user but doing for example those paint effects and combined with polys will crawl your system.
Another thing, how did you optimize your scenes for better performance? Thanks in advance and more power...

Hey Raymond ! We’re doing the best we can! :o) As for the spec of our laptop, I have a P4 3Ghz laptop. And Virginie, a DualCore 3ghz laptop.

Optimizing our scenes: we work with the previz that helps us to check stuff like: "Do we really need that much polygons here? Let see the previz… No we don’t, the object is going to be in the dark" and "What about a 1024x1024 texture on that table? Check the previz. No it’s going to be very far from the camera, let’s go with 128x128 texture map" etc…
So in the end, we end up with a scene that is quite light, you just need to "think/plan" your shot ahead before rushing into it ! :-)
In the end, when the scene is properly optimized, I just work till 2am, launch the renders on our 2 laptops and when I wake up at 8:00am, and entire shot is rendered (with the color, occlusion and every other render layers)
I check them, restart some (because of tweaks, second versions etc) or launch hires renders that will be done during the day (while Virginie and I are working on our day jobs :o) )

I’m trying to have in maya, the softest shadows I can, and place the colored lights in strategic places to makes the color bleed and mix with each others. That way, every objects are “linked”“. And then; I add a little glow that will push the effects a little further.

Hey nelson, Yes, for the tree, I started with a preset of tree in Maya just to get all the branches and leaves. I just tweaked it to get the result I wanted (random, color, selfillumination etc) :)

The volume lights are done within Maya. Just select you light (works with spot lights only) then under the Attribute Editor, click on the “LightFog” Attribute button. A lightFog node will be created. And that’s pretty much it! :o)

Hello!

I've been following this thread quietly for quite some time now. It's an amazing project and from what you've shown us it really captures a warm and magic spirit. I truthfully hope you two continue to work on this project. Took the time to read the whole thread through once more this morning and still found lots of interesting things :)

I myself am a first year student, studying 3d computer animation and visual effects. I just had my mid-year assessment and my teachers were really happy with me. The only point of criticism was that they didn't really know what in 3d got me really excited. And when I thought about it, I couldn't really think of something that _really_ got me going, except the Warcraft 3 animations from way back. But now that I've visited this thread again, it's become much clearer what I want to get out of my study and 3d in general. I still have 3.5 years of this study ahead of me and really want to commit myself to it.

really nice work. the renders are pretty amazing and the quality of the test anim is just great, maybe a bit fast but great overall. I do think she doesn't look that young also. I hate to be insulting but there really seems to be a creepy connection to your character and some sort of sexy older woman. I'm reading some sort of sexual identity much much older than the character. just a thought for believability.

Everything is very nice. After I saw your work I found a encouragement inside me that I can also do something.

The rendering is very nice... the main thing is bloom effect which you have given. its looks so nice...

I have few questions in my mind that: 1) which renderer you have used. 2) Is the bloom effect rendered from Maya or it is composite effect. 3) What is the procedure to achieve so nice bloom glow effect.

It's worth scanning through the whole thread and at least reading ssebastienn's replies - he gives out a lot of info. I believe he uses the Maya renderer, Mental Ray on the occlusion pass, and does the glow in post-production compositing.

Thanks again for your support Raymond! Means a lot! :p As for the tree, you’re right, the trunk was modeled and textured by Virginie in Maya. She made enough detailed so that the tree look good from the point of view of the camera. The leaves though were in the first place paintFX effects. Then I converted it in mesh so that I could control more easily the volume & shadows.

Yeah we made it to highend3d.com! that was great! We were also featured on 3dtotal.com and 3dvf.com. that was fun! :o)
I really like when people says that they are encouraged to work on their own short film etc! That’s a nice compliment I guess! :)
As for your question, I render everything with Maya Software, except the occlusion that is made with Mental Ray! Every postFX is done under combustion. And to have that overall look, I work back and forth between Maya and Combustion to mix everything together!

Hey Jonas! The animation is a big part, we’re working reeeaaaaally hard on it!!! That takes a lot of time of course! :o) And the quality of the render here is not optimal as everything is render without antialiasing or texture filtering etc as we are trying to optimize the render as much as possible. (We will of course re-render everything in high quality :o) plus the picture is jpg-compressed a lot… so that doesn’t help :o)

My favorite shot would have to be the clubhouse, or whatever from a
distance. Then, I really like the tools; their specularity really adds realism...
As far as the little girl - Is this a characture of the girl in your profile pic?
Anyhow, your character is modeled, really well (I'm not worthy). I'm not
too sure if you're shooting for photo realism on her or not, but I see it as
more of a level where she's in a video game cinematic...

im making a short film as my final project and i looked at the making of "AWAY", which is extremely valuable for me, to learn how to manage a short film.

We have some shots right now, but in a very WIP state. We would like to have the entire rough film for this summer, and then go back to the first shot and polish them one by one :o)
Cant' wait for this summer! :o)

I'll try to post some test animations and wireframe renders of the set, as 75% of the sets are laied out :o)

ok, i must admit that normally i hate majority of stuff done in 3d.
its either toilet cleaners, or supermens *(adds or super duper hero stuff)
but that doesn't make me hate 3d, in fact i love it. and even though only minority of stuff is not only visually interesting to me but has something more to it, i must admit (looking at the shots U posted) U might have done something really ... promising (you and your G-friend)
so congrats to bouth.
*(for others, i love superman (and adds, i worked on them for a year) and have nothing against it in terms of 3d, and cg but the story, sorry i am not American and this is not something i have read while i was child, so U must understand i have no obligations to love it :) but here we enter to much of philosophy then the matter which is on topic, so sorry,)

Big update today! :)
Virginie and I are proud to present you, 2 WIP pictures or/and behind-the-scenes! :p

The textures are Lowres here and there's no Anti-aliasing. We do that to have the quickest test renders as possible.
When working on early test renders, these kind of parameters are not very important (it's like a bonus!). That can slow your renders by 4 times or more! ... And you don't want that :)
This way we can tweak/setup the overall look of each shots easily.
So, that's when you need it, in the end, that every frame will be re-render in HIRES, and the final touches will be done.

I put a screenshot of the script on the first behind-the-scenes composition. I always find it funny that a single line on a script can create that many work! And that's a frame you're looking at. There's also all the animation work that we have to consider. :)

Also, as you can see, the previz helped us a lot. Since a lot of the timing & composition was done during this step, we could jump into a shot and start working with a clear vision of the complete shot, its constraints, what can be done on comp, what wont etc...

Hey I wonder, if you don't mind, how do you do your wires? They look really good. I've tried many ways of doing mine, but each way has it's own bad fault. I either won't get all edges or my wires get smudgy and clumped together unless I'm really close to the objects. And with lots of stuff in one scene that's just messy. Yours seem both smooth and accurate even at larger distances.

As for the wire, we're trying to model all of the objects with the same definition. Try to optimize the modeling of your objects, put details only when requiered and you'll get a nice averall wire :o)

As for the real news, at the moment, we are working on the biggest shot of "Meet meline". It's not that there is many details, hair interacting with water, crowds and epique battles in it. No. It's just a very long take that last 62 seconds where we follow our little girl Meline (The second longuest shot is 45 seconds long and the third longuest shot last for 32 seconds). Animation. :)
It's a very important shot and if we manage to put all our ideas in it, if we manage to place all the important keys that will support the story, this will be a fantastic shot that we will be very proud of as for the 25 other ones.:)

Can't wait to show you! :p

Another great thing is that almost all the modeling is done now! Yeee! :scream: What's missing are some minor details here and there that will be done after the first pass on the complete shortfilm.

I promise we will post more stuff like screenshots, behind the scenes, making ofs after the summer, after the first pass is done. It's just that, right now, there is sooo much to do, we dont want to tackle too many thins at once. :p

ive followed this thread since the start and i absoloutely admire your dedication and attention to detail its stunning. I think the pre renders have a real advent children style to them but 10 times better. Its really atmospheric and it works with the character so well.

those last couple of wip shots are fantastic - I love the subtle depth of field you have on the 2nd one - is that a post effect that you added with a depth map Sebastienn?

I love all the bits of matter in the air - thats something I'm working on with my own animation wip (link in my signature) which I'm doing in post effects - if you get a spare couple of minutes Sebastienn I'd really appreciate your thoughts on my project and where it is so far :)

The name "Meline" comes from Virginie. She always liked that name. She told me about it in the very beginning of "Meet meline", and I say "why not, that's a nice name" :o) ... Six months ago, Virginie noticed that there is a strange link between the names of her 3 nieces (that are Melanie, Aurelie, Marine) and "Meline".


Have you noticed? MELANIE + AURELIE + MARINE = MELINE !!! :p


Weird huh? :o) I guess there some Freud theory somewhere here... or that's just a coincidence (because if you put a number to each letters (A=1, B=2, etc...) and you multiply all the numbers by 10, minus cos(value.meline), you get 1588.2.... and 1588.2, translated in letters, is "WALL-E" ! Amazing hu? :o) )

Now, it’s Post-Production time which includes retakes of some animations & renders, compositing, sounds, music etc!!! and make each shot as readable as possible! :o)

So even though Production is over, the Post-Production will ask a lot of effort too for the next 6 months! :p

BIG NEWS!
Today, Virginie & I are proud to present to you, “MEET MELINE” … FOR REAL! :p

Oriana GOYONS (Virginie’s little sister) made the first set of “Meet Meline” as a maquette, a scale model using FIMO past (Polymer past). The beam and the ground are made with real wood painted to give it a more natural/old/used look! :p

She did an incredible job molding every little object that is on the short-film! :)
