View Full Version : Anatomy and Sketchbook Thread of Heozart
Heozart 09-03-2006, 10:28 PM Hi,
I am relatively new to drawing, and just started digital painting. There is so much to do here, and I thought the heads were a good place to start. Hopefully I will get around all 100 heads eventually.

I did this on a 8.5x11 sketchbook with that 6B pencil shown. My drawings tend to be a little mushy because I am afraid to use bold lines that pop up. I didn't spend a lot of time on the hair at all because I just wanted to focus on the face for now. Critique & comments are much appreciated as I really want to improve my drawing skills.

Heozart,
Welcome aboard! :)
It's good to see you start with the 50 Portraits Workshop - it's a great exercise, and I highly encourage you to do as many copies as possible.
One thing I would recommend with respect to your shading is to smoothly shade along the contours of the form - try not to sketch, but rather shade with your pencil in a singular direction along the contour of the form as though you are moulding the form with your fingers.
If you could tell us a bit about your art background and training, that would be helpful. :) If you are a high school student, then I recommend working completely traditionally - colleges look askance at digital work, so I recommend focusing on your traditional drawing and painting skills. If you are beyond high school / college, then you are encouraged to work in the medium of your choice (though I still feel it is necessary to have a strong traditional foundation before moving on to digital).
Looking forward to seeing more of your work, and to following your improvement here.
Cheers,
-Rebeccak

Rebeccak, thanks for your comments, I will try to shade along the contour with my next head drawing.
I am not a high school student, but more or less in that category. I graduated from college last year with a degree in music and in psychology, but I am preparing to go to an art school next year to study some kind of design. As for art training, I have been taking drawing lessons since January this year from this guy who really believes anyone can draw with proper training. He always sees the potential in me, and it has really helped counterbalance my more realistic assessment of my current skill level.
I started digital painting on my own initiative a couple of weeks ago after I saw what some people have done with it. I just bought a wacom tablet too so I really don't want to stop painting digitally altogether. I have lots of free time, so I would like to work both traditionally and digitally even if my portfolio has to consist entirely of traditional drawings.
Well, that's it for my short intro. I hope to have another head up soon.

I had fun with the second head today.

First with pencil. When I first saw the head I thought, "hey this one's going to be easy - so little to shade." I was so wrong, lol.

Next I tried with charcoal because smudging is too much fun. The 4B charcoal I used was very different from the one I am used to, and I had a hard time getting darker values out of it.

As I was drawing I kept seeing :lightbulb: so I had to do this. Result of playing with different layer blending modes in photoshop.
Rebeccak, I have some questions. Could you show me some examples of shading? I tried to follow the contour, but I had trouble with some areas like the cheek where you could go many ways. Do you use straight lines or curves? Also, if you only shade in one direction, when do you use cross-hatching?

Thanks for those links, Rebeccak.
Over the last couple of weeks, I got started on some of the heads, but just couldn't get myself to keep working and finish them. Here is a WIP for heads 3:

I just started drawing horses. What marvelous creatures they are. I used images of horses I found on google as reference to practice.
