Hi folks,
After sharing MEL-Scripts, how about sharing Shelves?

Here is one of mine. I use it for my lousy Character Setup Kung-Fu: :wip:

-The connect Buttons work as follow: select source object first then destination objects, press and done;

Thanks for the shelf....
I was thinking of posting this as a different thread, but thought maybe you could just answer it for me.
I am just starting out in Maya and have it at work and at home. I just installed it at work and the layout seems a bit different (ecspecially the shelves). Is there a way to take the preferences and bring them home so my layout is the same in both places?

If you are using Windows you can copy it out of you profile floder. It would be under:

Documents and Settings/your user profile/myDocuments/Maya/4.0

Just copy and paste it on your other computer and you should have the same setup on both machines.

My shelves are very simple:

1)defult shelf

2)UI manipulation shelf(changing background color, fake image planes...etc)

3)Power Poly Tools(I'm still on 4.02, so I don't have them implemented)

4)MJ Poly Menu

5)Bonus Game Menu

6)Edit Polygon Menu + mel scripts like Clay Magnet, Make Planar..etc

My intention initially was, that people would share custom shelves that were made for special purposes(rigging, texturing, workflow and the like) or shelves that have more complex functionality(Melscripts).

Maybe i should learn to express myself better. :rolleyes:

but, I'm trying to use these shelves to learn how people set up their workspaces a little more, but I don't know how to make this .mel show up as a shelf. I opened my script editor and opened the script, selected all and chose "save selected to shelf"...but i get one .mel on my new shelf...and i have a feeling there are more. I also tried to execute on of the mels in the script editor and didn't get anything either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hm - never thought of this, because i usually, when i put a shelf together use standard commands and icons. You know, dragging out of the script editor into the shelf and assign a icon to it.

Well, if you use other scripts in your shelves, downloaded at Highend for example then you should mention them (scriptname, author) so that people know what to search for.

I love my prefs, I bring them everywhere on a floppy.

All my poly tools and frequently used modeling tools are up on the North marking menu,.. including GI_JOe, Quick Selection Set Wizard, Center Picot, Delete History, Lattice,... etc,...I have to make an animation menu set for theSouth Marking menu now.


Then I have hotkeys for:

Render new image
select contiguos edges
grow shring selection
toggle between hiding UI elements and restoring UI elements.
toggle X-Ray
toggle wireframe on mesh
toggle push pull for artisan


Marking menus rule, they allow you to get the maximum size desktop and my hotkeys have the hide and restore UI elements so its really helpful.

hey people, this doesnt refer specifically to shelves, but it does relate to them: shelf buttons. I made a few custom shelf buttons for maya, but for some reason they only work when theyre saved on the desktop. Ive already updated the image paths for the buttons to the new folder theyre stored in, but now maya refuses to recognize the files. Maya only seems to recognize bmp's when theyre on the desktop.

i dunno what version my teacher has... it's on his computer. I'm doing it just for fun and so far I've learned polygons the HARD way... i still dont' know everything of course but I get by by just tinkering around with the shelf buttons and everything else in the menus. But I find some buttons more used than others and some good menu buttons NOT in the shelf. But I'll take your word for it and tinkering around with the current buttons on there.

Hey man...how the hell did you get a hotkey to get into X-ray mode???...Please let me in on that secret because chasing that down through the menu isnt' fun. (I know how to set custom hotkeys by the way, I just cant get that xray mode one setup)

Hey Abominable,..

This is the string I use as a hotkey in Maya 4.5, prolly the same in 4.0 aswell:

// get last panel that recieved focus
string $panel = `getPanel -wf`;
// toggle xray mode
modelEditor -e -xray ( !`modelEditor -q -xray $panel` ) $panel;


Not all of that info is needed but it works :)

Hi, i've tried downloading the scripts " lightGirl, rockGen." but whenever i install it , i get a syntax error.
After viewing the source it says it's for Maya 3.0 and 4.0

Do you know where i can get Maya 4.5 versions ?? :)

Open up the .mel script with wordpad or something and check the spelling of the name of the .mel file compared to what the name of the procedure is called. Ex... lightGirl.mel could have a syntax error when it doesn't match the procedure name in the script...say....lightgirl, all it takes is an upper case when you need a lower case to bugger it up. Maybe i'm just blowing smoke out my arse, but that may be the problem with the script for ya, im not too sure. Take a look anyway. Hope it somewhat helps. Later.

Mostly just general ones like for the different windows. Like connection editor, graph editor, that kind of stuff. I have alot of buttons I made myself that I need icons for like dulpicating in the different directions by -1. I have some realy bad icons I made for them right now. I am pretty bad at making icons so if anyoe has any tips for making them, or just keep posting good one they made here that would be very cool.

I don't know if there is one already or not, but heres a quick icon for a shelf I find useful for slapping my checkered grid to faces for texturing and UV layout. Just make a mel command to assign your checks (if you use them) to your selection.

if you want to find out where to find things like Wireframe on Shaded and Xray.
Got to your Script Editor and choose Echo All Commands and then select the X-ray or whatever and the command will appear.

Shelves are hard surfaces usually mounted on a wall via brackets for use in setting items apon for appearance or usage.

I use many shelves in my basement for collecting models, books and coins.


No really, you probably already know what Maya shelves are by now- so sarcasim on my part is purely innocent typing practice.

Hello everyone,

I think selection masks are really important in maya so I turned them into a shelf and then made a marking menu out of them (ALT+X),

Then comes a shelf for different tangents which again is not handy to change the tangent from where it is,
I also turned it to a marking menu (ALT+T),

I saw sample images of a tutorial that showed the Maya interface with icons of tools in a group on the left hand side. The shelf was on the bottom just above the timeline. Where and how can the Maya UI be set up like this? I haven't seen any threads on this.

Ok this isnt exactly a shelf button, but it makes life so much easier, especially when you use the shelves alot and ur in a hurry.

What it does is basically go to the next and previous shelves. i basically binded hotkeys to them. I dont know how to post pictures or files so im just going to past it in here... hehehe

Is there a Mel out there that will reverse normals from the majority selected from a grope of normals facing the right way? Like if you have 40 normals facing out, then there are (let say) 15 facing in, having the ones facing in change their possession to the majority of (Hope that makes since). So if not, could some one make one. It would make reversing normals a lot faster to fix then going in and doing it one by one. You would be a Mel script God to the forum.:)

Like if you have 40 normals facing out, then there are (let say) 15 facing in, having the ones facing in change their possession to the majority of (Hope that makes since). So if not, could some one make one. It would make reversing normals a lot faster to fix then going in and doing it one by one. You would be a Mel script God to the forum.:)
If I get you right your looking for a mel script which flipps all the normals in a specific
direction!

What I do is:
select Objekt, -> Revers Normals (All normals are on one side)
-> flip normals again -> all normals are on the other side

i beleive what your after is the "conform" function...

anyway heres my shelf im building up.. with anything proven trialed anf true ends up on.

10. creates a nurbs HUD that tells you spans/UV paramertisation (no need to have AA open)
11. Comet renamer..renmaeing tool without the maya bugs
12. allows you to zoom in/out without changing camera settings (handy for some image plane techniques

I have many more goodies but these live in hotkeys as im not much of a shelf user.. but these here are more so shelf item things than for hotkeys..

feel free to hunt down this scrpts and cut up this image for icons..I use a grey windows theme so all icons are made to blend in to 85,85,85

maybe off topic but..
i get the same problem as maymore, except that it happens for all my environment files (ie all preferences). i have one untested theory that if i change the location of these scripts it might work, http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/info/maya/manual/UserGuide/Overview/EnvVariables.fm.html#110411

I find it quite handy to have a few 'Sculpt Poly' tools on the shelf; one for pull, push, smooth, erase etc..

Been trying to figure this out since Maya3 - I think it's because 'My Documents' is on a SEPARATE partition (ie. C: contains Maya, F: is target for my documents). I have a major overhaul coming up in a couple days and I'm going to test this out....

For all you Mac users.
I found that the PC version, of a friend of mine, had
more presets as shelves than the Mac Maya.
A shelf with fur presets, a hair preset shelf, cloth and fluids shelfs as well.
It was just to copy them over to the Mac version and they works fine!

Well, that's not how it's working over here, the normals just reverse, as the command says. You need the "Conform" option in the Normals menu. But Conform works best (only?) if Maya knows what is the in or outside of your object. This means: it works on closed shapes (but you can often temporarily close your shape with the "fill hole" tool).

Here are 5 I use.

colorpicker - For finding rgb values for mel scripting -bgc #'s.
pmframecounter - adding frame # in view and playblast
bluemelstudio - mel scripting plugin
timewarp - modify timing of selected objs with 1 timewarp curve
cometrename - rename/# multiple objects, etc

My setup is simple since I deal mainly in just modeling and texturing.

1) Poly-modeling (simple poly functions, bevel, split poly,etc.

2) Texturing (UV layout, projections, face selection)

here's my set of icons for custom scripts that i use ( which are not included ) and for some standard maya operations which don't have it's own icons.

there is also a tempate button so you can make your own if you need some other.
just open template in pshop and put some text or picture...

all icons are with background that match maya's background so they fit nicely on shelves...

Which one? I can not find it. I did a search for his name and I found one that he posted a while back but there was no group icon in there.

Ninja Speed Box is a context sensitive tool box that changes when you are in different modes.
The modes are: No selection, single object, Multiple Objects, vertex, edge, and face.

The different modes contain functions mostly used in that mode.
When you only have faces selected it will change to face mode.
When you only have vertices selected it will change to vertex mode.. etc.

you can also add your own buttons to each context shelf
