Always a good place to start:

Pick up this book.
The Animators Survival Kit.
It is the best book for referense and understanding how to begin animating. I personally use Pose to Pose, and www.keithlango.com has a wonderful tutorial on how to start with that in 3D.
Good luck with your rig and animation!

ivo D,
Do you mean what's the best way to setup for animation, as in rigging? Are you talking about the technicalities of using max to animate or are you talking about the (for lack of a better word) "artistic" part of animation, timing, mood, emotion, character, etc.

"Whatever get's the job done"
A vague question generates vague answers
nah i want to know this too. Sure its an "how long is a piece of string?" question, BUT: opinions are roads to knowledge.
Personally, i like pose to pose.
And i also like the Disney book "the illusion of life"
That book is fantastic!! And it covers not only animation but every part of making a movie. (well at least an animated one)
Also if you can manage to get into one of Richard Williams masterclass´s theyre great mindfood too.
But rigging, i dont know. i hate rigging. I think i mustve misunderstood something about it. But my guess: practice.

I havnt done much of it myself, but my best guess for you is slap some bones in the model and go from there?
Not sure if that helps or not.

just want to know..and have some advice here..
and i know a lot of the 3d people..are just guessing ..and grabbing ..some tuts..
but no it aint what gets the job done..caus there are ways of animation that allways get the job done..there mussent be a short that you make 4 exaple ..wher you use multiple sorts of animation..
well i know you have to combine.. but oke.. i just want to know..
where how and what..caus.. offcource i can find rigging tools.and set it up..and move the legs a little and than make a walk cycle, duh! every dumb ass can make that(i havent done it yet lol)
but thats why im asking it here.. caus ..its true you can make a walk cycle.. but its just..purely and simple step by step explanation ,and you dont ecually learn from it..
*what is the best*? -key framing etc..
and if you know what is the most relavant..allround best way..
how do you do it.. , that what i want to know..

Seems like your question is two-sided sword; you want to know the 'best' way to animate, but this can only be found out by trial and error on your part -- impossible to answer the question you're asking. There are some basic ideas in animation that any book on animation will cover. You should look into that.
But if I get you right, maybe the question you'd like to ask is: "Would some of you nice chaps explain a little about the way you animate?"
Can't remember if anyone pointed you to Keith Lango's site or not; but this is one method that I like -- Pose-to-Pose.

Enjoy.

I would say then, pose-to-pose. But that's just me......look, put it this way: Why don't you try pose to pose and see if you like it. It's certainly a time-honored method, and you'll learn a hell-u-va lot by doing it. If it doesn't suit your fancy, move on to straight-ahead animation. Then again, there aren't that many methods out there. I mean, in the end, you just kinda do it. Probably, too, you'll get a much better answer reading articles and books and watching movies. The technique will come when you are actually making that walk cycle --which you should do even though you think it's useless; what you learn from doing it is invaluable. It's one of the harder things to do. :)
goed geluk (no, I can't speak Nederlands, I just remember something like that)
