Here's a goblin model I've been working on and decided to enter. Luckily, I started modelling him on the 11th, so it's all above-board!! My original thread for this character is here:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3671

He's very much a lesser demon, meschevious and petulent. Eats children. You know the sort.

All Modeling is done in Cinema 4D XL 7.3 and texturing, given time, will be done in Bodypaint.

Would be very grateful for any suggestions / comments!

Here's the work so far, starting with my concept sketch:

Hehehehe! I like the look of this guy. Have you used radiosity in the render? Its got a kewl look to the serface :)

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I'm using 4D's radiosity (version 7+). Its set to a fairly low quality 'cause it's a bit too processor intensive for my poor little iMac (400Mhz G3:annoyed: )

Will have more posts up later today.

Ps. How do you get people to rate your thread, or is it just left to their own initiative?

WOW! Very cool. I love the teeth. The ears turned out nice too. Keep it up.

Here's a small update. Working on the hands next (not my strongest point!!).
The forearm is this render needs to be elongated.
Let me know what you think!

Terrific puddlefish! He looks super evil, with lots of personality. How about making his pecs more sparse, with the ribs really showing through.

Here's an update. Decided to chicken out and leave the hands until tomorrow (maybe he can just be wearing oven gloves), so I started the legs instead.
They're not finished, the boots are too small, and they're generally just not how I want them. Shouldn't take too much work to knock them into shape though. (BTW the fact that his body couldn't possibly support his head is intentional, and liberties are being taken with the anatomy). This will be my last update today. MGS2 is calling to me...

Here's a little update on the legs. They're looking little better now. Still needs work though.
Any suggestions as to what kind of situation / pose I could put him into?

Hey Puddlefish - cool to see your groovy goblin here!!!! It's looking great so far :):)

Finally got a start on those hands (damn I hate modelling hands!)
Only the fingers done so far, but the rest shouldn't take too long. Then it's just down to final details. (still have to put his shirt on)

A little bit more tweaking and I'm done for the night. (he has a belly button now!)

Hi there!

I love your character but I'd increase his tigh size just a little bit. It would give him a little muscular shape enough to let him look miserable yet powerful! ;)

very cool

Hands are almost done. Here are some different views. Please forgive the poor image quality. My computer's having a bit of a hard time with the renders, so these are simply screen grabs of the editor :(

A few more changes need to be made before rigging. The hands still need more work, the boots need more detail and Nazgul, I think you might be right about the thighs, so I'll try that too.

Let me know if you think any other area needs particular work.

PS: The tshirt will be put on last as I'm going to try to do it with dynamics (more of a test to see if 4D dynamics will handle it, it would actually be easier just to model it!) so the details in the torso aren't really finalised.

Here's a proper render as he now stands.
I'm trying to decide whether to start texturing him or to get him rigged and posed untextured. What do you think?

parallax

great stuff :)
It fits the character well, but IMO the head is a itsy-weee-little-bit to big.

Looking pretty good so far! Love the head, but maybe a test with it smaller to compare?

About the hands have you tried lupin's tut, in the modleing folder, not half bad :) I think it a matter of separating the fingers and adding those nice curves you've got all over the head to the palm and knuckles :D

Wow dynamics for the shirt I think it might be a nightmare, maybe just for some loose parts ?
Nice to see a C4d m8 ! I'll give you a mmmm . . . .
well I'll be watching my thread like a hungry dog :drool:

see you,

Thanks for the comments!!

l_farley13_l: yeah, hands are definitely not my strong point!! These still need work, and until they're rigged and posed they're going to look wrong anyway. Not too sure how the tshirt will work out. I may just end up modelling it.

parallax: With this character the head was always intended to be impossibly big, and the body relatively small. I may (given time) do a quick test with a smaller head, but for the moment this closer to what I was going for.

Here's a little bit of messing in photoshop to get an idea of what the textured character might look like. I'm not going to be able to get him textured for the end of this challenge, so I'm just going to rig him and pose him next.

cool looking character here.
one of the most original resign so far.
It looks like it's going to bite me anytime.
haha......
don't let the dog out.

no crits no the model. u followed the sketch nicely.

Finally got around to rigging this guy. If there's one area Cinema 4D really blows in it's IK. What a nightmare. It still isn't even close to finished, but this is as good as I could get it so far. This is just a quick pose test before I collapse... Colours are again applied in Photoshop.

EEK!! not long to go now. Better get my skates on!! Just took a look around the other threads. Some fantastic work going on here!! How about we all join forces a là Captain Planet and conquer the world, I mean make a kickin' movie. :)

Hey Puddlefish,

Nice transition from 2d -> 3d. Wonderful sketch by the way. Your end pose there reminds me of Beavis and Butthead! (plus, I've always wanted to use this particular smiley - now it's appropriate) :buttrock:

heh, let's see that t-shirt next!

Here's another bit of messing. My head's just full of messing today.
He seems to be laughing at the horrible fate he has in store for the city's unknowing inhabitants...probably.

Have to start working on the final image soon. I've decided to leave the tshirt out, as it was getting to be a bit of a pain. I'm going to give him some sort of jet pack I think, complete with apendages for catching children...probably.

No replies? aww nuts...
Only kiddin'!!

Will have to finish this guy tomorrow as I have to work Wednesday & Thursday (dammit). I'll try to get a rough pose and model for his jet pack thingy up early tomorrow to get your comments.

I think the quality and variety of work in this month's challenge has surpassed any so far. Amazing collection of talent here.

Here's the basic jist of the jet pack. Goblins have an complete and unparralleled mastery of anti gravity, by the way.

It's going to have a few arms coming out of it with bits and pieces for catching children, a tranq gun, maybe a net and a big bat?

Let me know what you think, also suggestions are greatly appreciated.

puddlefish
04-02-2002, 10:53 PM
Here's a bit more work on the jet pack.
An ice cream to lure 'em and a big wooden mallet to bag 'em.
Practical, no?

Hey nice pose there! That face is just brewing with trouble :) The head definitely steals the show! And about the IK thing- screw it! FK is easier for just about everything except legs anyway! Unless animation is required, FK is definitely the way to go, and even if it is :D :D Nice pack there too!

see you,

Thanks for the replies.
l_farley13_l, when I said IK I actually meant Cinema 4D's entire bone deformation system (which blows). Terminology was never really my strong point! Zombie films, now there's my strong point.

HAHAHA:D

the whole "catching children" thing is great man!! yea, he definitely needs some kind of bag or net for the kiddies

Here's some shots of the goblin and jet pack together. I lost the ice cream in favour of a great big circular saw.

I'm not going to have time to do much to this guy before the Friday deadline, so let me know what you think and where improvements need to be made.

Thanks

Well, the hour is getting late, and I've a new computer game to play (ico!!), which never has a good effect on my productivity. I've got the final(ish) model set up and ready to render, but I have to wait until tomorrow to do a decent render on the computers in work. My poor little iMac won't handle it.:(
'till then!
Any last minute comments or crits?

I don't really have the time to do much more to this guy, so this propably gonna be my final image. Hop you all like it. I do plan to animate him at some later stage. Thanks for all the comments ad good luck to everyone!!
