Hey all, I'm planning to buy a new computer that I will be using primarily for 3d work in MAYA. I'll also be using photoshop allot. I know very little about computer specifications and would appretiate suggestions for a computer that will be good for me, my budged is preferably around $1800-2200.

I wont be using this comp for gaming so if I can get a video card that's good for 3d but not that good for gaming its ok.

I'd also like to know how the new mac pro is compared to PCs of similar price. And if I will be able to connect my flatscreen apple display to a PC, its not the newest of apple displays, it's around 3 years.

Thanks in advance!

I would go for a Intel Core 2 procesor. They also have a new Xeon Processor but I'm not sure what it's called. Basically these came out in July and for the most part they are just becomeing available because everyone is snatching them up. They are DEFINATLLY the best processor and a huge leap. When they came out they were so powerful and cheap realitive to what they could do that just about all chips dropped in price by about half. I have heard that the newest mac's have Core 2's in them. Personally I am not a big mac fan and think that they are overprices and not as powerful. There's no doubt that they work for some people though.

I'm pretty sure you will be able to set up your monitor. I would go to mac.com and see if you can find a driver for the monitor. That's a peice of software that makes sure that you get all the features from a peice of hardware and tell it how to work.

As far as a graphics card if you don't want to get into gamming then I wouldn't buy a computer with a Nvidia Gforce or an ATI Radieon. The cards made for workstations work from what they say at least much better with 3D apps. They also cost much more. What your going to want to look for is an ATI fire card or better yet a Nvidia Quatro which seems to be the best bet for Open GL which is what the 3d Programs run best in.

Good luck in createing the best computer for your needs!
