Title: Deep Sea Creature
Name: Diane Özdamar
Country: France
Software: Photoshop

Mermaids have been lots of times described as beautiful and kind creatures. But that's not the way they are described in mythology. They are said to be crual winged creatures that turned into a crual mix between human beings and fish. They were singing to attract sailors then they eat them.

This is my own version of a mermaid/siren, a deep sea creature using photophore to attract preys.

Photoshop CS and a wacom intuos 3A4

No reference used (only doing some google search to see how the photophore of the anglerfish looks like)

30 hours approx.

You can see details here (http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/1152/seacreaturedetailssk7.jpg) and the whole painting process there (http://www.gfxartist.com/community/forum/129720)

Crits and comments are most welcome! :)

I agree with the idea on mermaids. I draw/paint a lot of them and the mermaids in my world
( Relm) are cunning, curious pranksters. They also drown sailors and sink fishing boats. Nice painting. Nice to see another real mermaid fan like me! :applause: I just wish maybe in a year or so I will be painting mine as good as yours!

Amazing use of colours and a very engaging composition :)

Technically your work is beautiful and a good understanding of anatomy too!

I'm really pleased that this has more depth than a typical mermaid drawing (mythical history) and I commend you on that

Should be enough positive points for now... lets get its exposure up [plugged]

While this is very good in terms of mood and lighting, I can say it can be improved through some value changes, an enviroment for the mermaid to sit in (tell the story) and probably by seeing more anatomy, some sort of gesture made by her body or other hand.

Not the kind of mermaid I’d like to meet:D but it’s a beautiful painting nevertheless :applause:

Btw, I liked the air bubbles in one of the pre final images too

All the congratulations on how amazing your work is have already been made, howeverwhat I admired the most about it was the process, and the constant updates you made to a painting that was good from the begining, without resting on what you had, constantly looking for new ways to improve.
I often rest on what I think to be a good idea and you process of work was one more lesson I learned today.

Great work

I love that grin!
It's almost not a grin at all, doesn't feel like she's smiling.
She's just about to mess you up big time.

nice idea to combine anglerfish elements with a mermaid, great concept and atmospheric image ;)

Thank you very very much for all your comments artists! I've forgotten to post the alternative crop here but it's in the WIP thread for those who are interested in seeing it :)

AngryScientist : I wanted to keep it simple (some people already told me that there were too many elements in it) so the crop it kinda tight and there are no floating elements in water (since she lives in deepsea, there's not a lot of life around her ;) ). Thanks for your comment anyways, you're not the only one to tell me that (I guess that there are 2 different points of view : the ones who like details, large format showing the whole body and environment and the ones who like simplicity. I'll try to do something more "complicated" next time :) )
