View Full Version : Yet another beetlebot update.
KlooM 01-27-2003, 09:01 AM I've added detail to the head and started modeling the shell. I'll post test renders of him in his all-four-pose, his regular bipedal pose, and also with his shell open. The opened shell looks kind of empty right now, but I've yet to model an interior complete with rocket boosters and the mechanism for extending them. I I must also try to make the hinges and the shell connect better so that the opened hatches won't look that fragile. It's hard making massive full length hinges for curved doors and I don't want to make the edges straight cause the would give his shell a very flat look. So what do you think?

Fantastic, I love the detail. You know a models gonna be good when it looks great without any texturing. Nice work.:applause:

love the second pic with the open shell, maybe have some pistons or hydrolics for the flaps to open with, just a suggestion:bounce:

I only have one comment and thats that when he is on all fours, he looks slightly off balance; he looks like he may well tip forward.
Also, the way his back legs bend when crouching seems at odds with the way his legs are bent when standing.
But hey, I'm just being devils advocate here; it's great man! :D
awe$ome :applause:
I would really like to see it textured and animated.

Thanks for the comments guys!
Yeah he does seem a bit unbalanced when on all fours, but I haven't rigged him yet with a proxy mesh so it's slowslowslow to pose him if that's a valid excuse. :)
I will balance him better when he's done, about the hind legs they will probably stay that way cause he turns them 180 degrees when getting down on all four. I might decide to let the heels point the same direction as when standing though.

man.... you must develop a series of this machines-type..
insects based... a giant locust!
You have a concern about the hinges on the back and I have a random idea. Take a look at the hinges on the trunk of a car. It might give you a way to make them look a bit more sturdy while maintaining the curved surfaces. If you're like me and don't have a car, don't run off and steal one. I know we sacrifice a lot for our craft, but I'm not sure if jail time is quite worth it.

thats looking better and better!!! wow.....Have you thought about adding some type of Insect...(Lady Bug) type wing system to come out from under the shell when it's opend up?
Keep it up..and keep us posted like you have been!!

I've begun the work on the rocketboosters now. I've removed the frame around the shell since it would look a bit out of place with the way I want the rockets to work. The rockets themselves are just standins to help me figure out just how big I can make them before they clip through the shell. There is not much space in there so I'm planning to have several parts fold out on the rockets, for now It's just a 4 way split of the main body. I'd like the boosters to extend from the rear and also the tailfins to flip out. Since I'm working on a lot of moving parts I have to do test animations of them to make sure they all work in the grander scheme. And here's the first tiny test. :)

keeps better and better:thumbsup:
I have a little suggestion for animation: when these panels on rockets open, I think they should rotate, or at least something should rotate there...with everything moving along arcs, (that's how it looks) actual movements of these panels don't fit, something is lacking...
Great model, I love it, I just love it!
But as you said, the opened shell looks a little weird, tho. Maybe you could vertically divide the 6 (or are it 8?) parts of the shell by three and only connect the middle part of them, the other's flapping from a hinge that connects the three parts? :D

yeah i did but he didn't mention how he was going to open them, was just a suggestion i was making:shrug:
Instead of the rockets flipping out, maybe put them on telescopic wings, or use a harrier jump jet type engine, unless you were set on using a rocket shape.
