Hi Everyone. :wavey:

First time posting a WIP. After reading some posting in CgTalk, I got aquatinted with Feng Zhu's concept artwork. (http://www.artbyfeng.com/) :buttrock: As a lot of you know, Feng has graciously allowed modelers to use his ideas as starting blocks for personal projects. I am intending to improve my portfolio by modeling and texturing his sphere robot. (http://64.246.38.49/artbyfeng/vehicles/vehi_10.jpg)

I have started and have an image to show. The pewter and copper textures are placeholders and I am still working on the metal body texture but it is coming along. I am limited on ram and am using version 2.5 of 3D Studio Max (lack of funds means no upgrades for a while.)

I would like feedback if you could. I am trying to bevel edges and I think that helps quite a bit. I come from a low polygon background and am still using polygon-modeling techniques. I am looking for mostly quality improvement tips. (And job tips, if you have any.) Might have been a good project for nurbs. What are your thoughts?

great start there.

will you be putting this in a full environment, or it is just a modelling and texturing exercise?

I don't think Max's NURBs will be of much use here. It looks like poly modelling is working for you so far, so why change ;)

Blindleader,

I will try and do full environment with visual effects. I am not sure what Feng had in mind for this robot but the construction reminds me of a boiler in a steam locomotive, furnace doors included (see Feng's drawing in link above). Source of power is something glowing behind the doors and lots of steam. I am thinking a mid 1900's warehouse atmosphere (robot will look old, 60 plus years of weathering and such. Steam powered, it must have been made in the late 1800's, right?). I am thinking of changing the spring-loaded cylinders to steam nozzles as a means of propulsion. The side panel opens up to reveal more nozzles? Or guns? I’m not sure yet. Any thoughts? I will post more as I have time to work on it. Thanks for the response.

Don't be shy... Need feedback. Has anybody seen Feng's site? Am I doing his concept justice? I know it's still early. It needs details. Well enjoy. Here it is a little further along. I started playing with lighting ideas. Several of the textures are still placeholders. Glowing texture inside is from studio max. I will photoshop all textured surfaces when finished.

I see no comments since day one. Either I am not doing to well in developing details or I picked a boring subject to model. I will chose better next time. (My ego made me say that last line. Sorry Feng.):)

Anyway here is the latest installment.

I didn't think the last picture did this model justice. Here is 3/4 view. I am detailing one side of the model. I will reflect it to the other side when finished.

Comments! Please! (Oh my god, I am becoming a beggar of critiques. ... I was going to say "beggar of praise” but too one sided.) “Please sir, can I have another?”

Mike:)

ok well i checked out feng's concept and i gotta say you are on your way, it looks nice so far - i can crit when more details start coming out - but for now it looks fine, and are u going to model the inside tubes and such?

Yes. I am going to add more geometry... wires, tubes and such, inside. I've really got to finish modeling and texturing it. I am close to cutting it in half and reflecting the detailed portion. Thanks for the input. For those who need the url for the original sketch from Feng... it is http://64.246.38.49/artbyfeng/vehicles/vehi_10.jpg (http://64.246.38.49/artbyfeng/vehicles/vehi_10.jpg)

I won't beg any more about getting crits. I thought it was getting lost in the crowd, if you know what I mean.
