View Full Version : Cartoon Bear

Hi ya'll. This is a new project that I started today. I'm going to take this project from start to finish....model, texture, rig, animate, and render. And I'll keep this thread updated with my progress as much as possible.
The character is a cartoon bear that I've had in mind to animate for quite some time....a design of my own but borrowing some flavor from Mike Kunkel's HeroBear.
So, here's the very first steps.
Created a box with dimensions roughly approximating the size of the bear's body.
No cutting or anything yet, just moving verts to indicate a very simple head
More pushing verts and an extrusion to block in the snout (kinda looks Barney at this point).
Cut lots of loops for the mouth
Cleaning up edge loops and indicated a brow-line
Adding some detail around the eye area
Edgeloop clean-up....getting rid of pesky tris (I have an unnatural fear of them)

I already like the face!
The face is apearing and it's looking cool indeed already!
Keep it up!

Some updates. I guess this is starting to resemble a tutorial of sorts.
Extruded and roughly shaped the ear
Cut some more loops around the mouth, to give better lip deformations later during animating
Some major reconstructive surgery on the nose. Now with nostrils
As a final touch to the face, I adjusted the position and orientation of the eyes using soft selection.

another update, added limbs.
A very humble beginning to the arms
Lots of extruding and moving points to build the rough overall shape of arms
Start the legs the same way as the arms
Building the legs
Arms and legs more or less blocked in

Some edge cleaning and adjustments to finalize the foot shape
Beginning of the claws on his feet
Mid-step of claw creation
Started the tail
A quick and rough tail

very simple but very effective ;P keep up the good work!

I like the head but the body could have some more personality. I suggest making the body bigger and fatter and the legs shorter and less human like. Do you know the kid's tv show 'bear in the big blue house'? That's kinda what I mean.

Took a long vacation this past weekend, so sorry for the delay in updates.
Here's the beginning of the claws on the arms
Started the mouth by carving out a "bubble"
Lots of extruding and sculpting later, and here are the final teeth and gums
I played with some proportions and basic coloring. Here's the overall character so far.
yeaah i like wide forearms
he seems nice, kind, or something like that

like watching your work...

hehe, he's great! nice bit of work done simply and efficiently : )
are you planning on animating him, just curious as to whether you're going to add loops to aid the rig deformations? (i was mainly looking at the elbow joint area here)

I do plan to rig and animate this fella, so I'll be illustrating that entire process as well. So, yes, that also means I need to work on edgeflow around some of the joints.

when you clean up the edge loops, could you show before and after pics? i always get stuck around the shoulders and hips.
