View Full Version : Wired: Can the PS3 Save Sony

Quote:
"Never try to introduce the same product twice. That was the lesson from the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May. A year earlier, at E3 2005 in Los Angeles, Sony had wowed the videogame industry with demonstrations of the upcoming PlayStation 3's unprecedented graphical muscle. The machine wouldn't be available until months after Microsoft's next-gen console, the Xbox 360. Yet based on the spectacular preview, many gamers had no problem waiting for the PS3. Then, early this year, Sony dropped a bombshell: The PS3 release would be pushed back until November. So when E3 came around again this spring, everyone trooped out to the retro Hollywood lotusland of the Sony Pictures lot – only to view the same console they'd been promised the year before. Not great.'"

Where ever the Final Fantasy series goes I'll go! I think thats where Sony has the edge (In the exclusive titles that they have).

At least one game and a controller, plus tax. Easily over $700 out the box with only one game.

it'll depend on the games and the additional features above and beyond the gameplaying that the ps3 can do

currently i'm more interested in the Wii as they are having a stab at doing some thing DIFFERENT rather than just more polys on screen or higher erez tesxtures or even higher definition screen output...

but

if the games on the ps3 alos have better and more engeging GAMEPLAY then they'll do well
..simply being faster/bigger doesn't get my cash card out....and loading times need to be short too...no good having 32gig on a disc if i can bake a cake whilst waiting for a game to loadup...as i'd fill in the time by playing a game on the DS...instant loading!

Well, for me Sony has nothing to offer. An expensive console, and no game I'm interested in at launch... So, where's the wii!?!?! :scream:

Funny, I had the same feeling. Personally I think they're all going to fail miserably and the Phantom console will win the next-gen war.

ROFL. oh god. the phantom. i remember a few years ago when that thing was first starting to be mentioned. seemed so promising. aren't the people behind that (i can't remember the name of the company at the moment) gonna get into the software side of things? lol....the phantom. hahaha

Whatever the case, it'll be interesting to see them try. Meanwhile, we'll probably be up to our ears in CG work while they try to make this piano fly. All is good in my opinion.

peace,

FFXI is available for the 360.

i too am squares bitch. Wherever they go they've got me by the balls. Note: I don't consider FFXI to be a canonical Final Fantasy but only because its an online game. Besides its supposed to be a port not a Final Fantasy proper.

HamsaPaksham

And Wii will have FF Christal Chronicles and Dragon Quest!

True, and the GC version.... but those are 'different'. I wouldn't consider those part of the typical FF 'series'.

I do not see how this can be considered "CG News". Beyond it being genrally off topic of what this section is meant for, it is speculation, and in no way news. Maybe editorials like these are better suited for the general discussion area, or perhaps left for people to find on their own time.

I think topics like this carry weight. If an article posted said, "Can George Lucas' 3D save film?" it wouldn't be met with collision.

Although I think there's definitely place for a video game forum within cgtalk, I think it would get a lot of play.

I think the article's title should be re-written :

Can Sony Save the PS3.

Lotsa ppl here have CG jobs in video gaming. Even an editorial about the future of Sony has value as news, considering Sony's success can mean a boom in employment.

TheLostVertex

I must disagree, there is a line between an editorial and news. It can be the differance between "a merger might happen in the future" and "a merger has happened". Since this section is called "CG News" I come here looking for news, not "CG Speculation".

I really want one butI can't justify $600 USD for a game console. Heck I could just poor that much money into my PC and it would be better then the PS3 plus it would help me with CG.

Now back on topic. The ps3 will probably sell out on the first day, I wont be getting one on launch day for two reasons, one reason being that Im quite broke, another reason being first generation sony projects always seem to end up being faulty.

agreed. its gonna be going for crazy amounts on ebay just like the 360. id love to get my hands on one for release purely for investment. im sure i saw xbox premium packs going for $2000 on ebay at release. and at the lowest around 700-$800.

if you think u can get ur hands on any for release im thinking it wont hurt to snap up as many as poss from as many different sources. youll at least double your money guranteed. unless it totally bombs but thats never gonna happen.

of course u need that money to begin with so that counts me out. unless my luck changes rather swiftly.:)

EDIT: i hope what iv said isnt illegal. but if it is leme know:surprised

I think the article makes many valid points, and also some missleading points as well.
BlueRay is a serious gamble. and as a sony fanboy, I'll admit that BlueRay sounds as bad as BetaMax or UMD. It's deffinately better, but better doesnt alwayse mean it will sell.

Another issue with BlueRay is how its being held hostage by Hollywood lawyers. This is something that makes me sick. Essentialy, you cant produce something new, without someone else saying you cant produce it unless theyre allowed to have controll over it and what it does in order to 'protect' themselves. Lets say you produce the most amazing video recording device ever, it zooms 10000X with crystal clear picture, records at 100X the most defined size you can get with a professional camera to date, even does night vision and thermal and encodes in its own propriotary format for storage uses, or even an open format for usability with other machines, well, you cant sell it without everyone else you can, because they need DRM to protect something that realy isnt being attacked in the first place. Hollywood let the world record movies with VHS off of TV a long time ago, now theyre trying to restrict any sort of recording as much as possible using digital flagging systems and DRM because they suddenly decided " wait.. we can SELL TV SHOWS" "We can RE-SELL movies 10 times with different screen sizes/specials/etc" And thats why they keep attacking things like BlueRay and HD-DVD. Its the same reason people are whining about Microsoft 'crippling' Vista's HD capability, its not something they can get around, because Hollywood would easily get away with suing Microsoft if they didnt.

Unfortunately, people probably dont know this information. The general consumer realy isnt going to know much about anything behind the scenes other than " Does it work?" and " will it make my neighbor jealous?"

As far as the cost goes. I can only assume if you tried to upgrade an Xbox 360 to the stats of a PS3 later on by buying an additional HD-DVD player component, and HD, then it costs just about the same, no? But that innitial price of $600 is quite a deturrent to people who dont think about the overall math. In reality, it sounds like Xbox360 and PS3 realy cost the same in the end. And the Wii is the only one that realy cuts them both down with its cheap pricing.

But yes, Sony does seem to have production issues. and the ending statement does seem to say it best

"That shareholder in Tokyo had the right idea: Bring back mighty Sony. Please. That doesn't mean gargantuan Sony or megalomaniac Sony or rule-the-universe Sony; it means a Sony that's fun again. And for God's sake, no more wars in the living room – not unless they're the kind we can play with our friends."

Sony realy needs to focus on something other than how "hardcore" their specialised hardware is, and get something a bit more usefull for everyone out there.
