You can create template files, that are simply rif files with the canvas size you want to work with, any layers you want as defaults, canvas color, textrure etc, anything you can have in a rif file.
You save the template file in the 'templates' folder in the application folder, and then whenver you start up Painter, from the Welcome Screen in the templates drop list select the file to start with, and it opens, but since it is a template, when you go to save it, you will be asked for the filename and location, as with a new canvas.
