Hi friends, I saw your great art in most of the CG artist 2D portifolios i liked the way you paint more than anywhere else i saw the 2D on the net, so i decided to have a little experience with this field at least it will make a big help with my other skills,I choosed a pretty girl from the internet I will try to trace her and make my own one with my own coloring skills and style.

i'm now working on more than a project but i will take a rest from the 3D and try this out:

here is my reference girl picture:

if you can actually finnish the painting of her without getting too distracted by her alluring eyes then it will be a complete sucess in my opinion:D

I really don't think you should trace. If you want to improve at all or to test your skills, then don't trace. Look at the picture and draw what you see, or perhaps use the grid method if you just can't get it at all, but tracing will get you nowhere.

I think the face looks great but it looks like you gave up on the hair, and that keeps atracting my attention. I think if you spend a little more time on the hair this will turn out to be a great piece. Also i'm not too keen on the heart on her chest- i'd suggest maybe keeping the chain as in the original photo and then putting a heart as the pendant.

Pherbis, your ideas are right the hair is a very fast work i still don't know exactly how artists creat realistic hairs, i'll see what i can do, i don't have much time actually and this what makes me do it fast.
Pherbis : i'd suggest maybe keeping the chain as in the original photo and then putting a heart as the pendant.

absolutely better. agreed. :)

The heart looks much better. The hair could still use some work.

Here's a tutorial you might find useful:

Flaming, the hair is a big improvement! However, the only reason it doesn't look spot on right now is because of the confusing light sources in your scene. How many are there? There's the lit sky, there's another on the left, casting shadows on the face, there's another on the right casting light on the hair and hand. An abundance of light sources in close up shots like this detach from the sense of the depth you'd have otherwise.

You might want to be careful with your whites as well, look how much space the white claims on your canvas, distracting the viewer from the attractiveness of all other colour.

You could consider picking one or two light sources, a primary and a secondary and sticking to them. If you choose to illuminate her face directly, you might want to tone down your background, so they don't compete. Leave the details to the foreground, where you want your viewer to spend more time.

I made a quick paintover to illustrate what I mean. I picked the backlight as the main light source, which may not be what you envisioned, but it's an example only. I also added some magenta from the background to her skintone and hair and I added blue to the shadows so the composition doesn't look so monochromatic. The blue also helps enhancing the warm tones used all over the place. I didn't mean to completely smudge your tree things on the back, but I think their details are a bit too distractive and thereby competes with your center of interest, your model.

Notice also that with the white gone, now the sky is far more dramatic.

I hope that helps somehow. =)

Hi your fixes where so great i like the way light comes from background and darken the model, it is sometimes better to get out of what we know, i like photorealistic things more than other thats what makes me follow photos more than trying to do my own, i think whatever we know nothing will go beyond the nature and even so it is from it somehow.

your image is better with the lighting.

I'm very fond of realism too Flaminglow. My favorite painters are dutch painters with great knowledge of light and shadow and the portrayal of realism. However, not always what works for a photograph will work for a painting, especially in the case of portraits. It's very difficult to attain the level of detail and variation you can get from a close up photo, it takes alot of practise. You need to also consider that like paintings, photographs can be dull and uninteresting if taken by an amateur photographer. They may not be the best sources for your composition (other than reference).

However, with some study of colour and light you can create very pleasant images based on photographs without the need to go nuts on the details or attempts of replication. Don't be hesitant to play around with them. :)
