are you looking to make cartoon style (2d) renders? or learn how to model cartoony characters?
if it's modelling cartoony characters, then maybe you should first check out the loomis books on www.fineart.sk for learning how to draw what you want first, and then maybe do a couple of tutorials like the joan of ark one http://www.sumea.com.au/snews.asp?news=118&related=Modeller
should give you the links you need (the original was in french so be prepeared for some strange translations, also it was for 3dmax, but the same rules apply for modeling).
if you want to render in a 2d handdrawn style then there are several tutorials, Naam's excellent celshading trick, or there's even a tutorial in teh tips section in the renderzone area on my site
http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/
there are several others, also while you're there go o teh library and download kais Shades of Cel toon shader presets.
good luck :)
