Very impressive work, and a nice WIP thread to boot. Well done indeed - Plugged.

My only crits would be of the mouth post that looks a little bit pinched in the corners, and the hair looks like it has maybe a few too few subdivisions in certain places at the top, however apart from that it's one of the best CG portraits I've seen on CGTalk. Excellent work.

I have a hard time comprehending that is CG it's so real, I was following your WIP, and I have to say it turned out even better then I thought it would. The only thing that breaks the realism for me is that some of the curly hair strands looks alpha maped. Other then that my brain feels like it's going to explode due to your awesomeness...

I think that the skin is very nice for the most part, if someone really wants to nitpick, they could say something about the ears being a bit waxy and hard looking. But the good thing is that your pragmatic usage of the hair to mask the ears takes away the need to care too much about that ehehe.

She looks so good! I think you should find some way to get your render to the actress herself :D I'm sure she'll think it's super! 10 Stars for you :D

I'm just wanna say thank you so much for the comments, and the frontpage too :), I'm really flattered now....

I don't remember how long it took to make it....but I think it's been 3 months already ? though I spent weeks just to wait for the rendering hehe (its 15 hours for 1800x1350 res)

also, I put couple of her reference pictures, and couple of direct comparison with the real actress during the WIP section, so check the WIP thread if you want to see it :)

Wow, this is simply stunning. This is by far the most realistic looking model I've ever seen. When I saw the thumbnail on the front page I honestly thought it was a picture of a real person. You could print this on a magazine and no one would be the wiser. It's actually scary when you think about it...I hope for all of Hollywood's sakes that the National Enquirer doesn't hire you to prop models of celebrities in questionable situations! lol

Not good flip on the corner of lip. Its a sharp shadow in the left hole of nose and I do not love the ear shape too.

But these were the bad part of work. the good part is: WOW!

Really wow. Its so realistic and a common look can not make different it with a real actress!

Oh dear GOD, that made my jaw drop. That is insanely good, definitely the most realistic render I have ever seen in my entire life.

first I could not believe that this should be a 3d rendering. :eek: I thought "Come on, this has to be a photo!"; and if nobody had told me that this really is cg (thanks to the wonderful WIP) then maybe I never would have found out. :thumbsup:

Once you know it, you see that the hair is not real and also some wrinkles seem to be strange. But let me say that this is really VERY close to reality for me.

I love it. Like many have others, I couldn't tell it's 3d at first. The only parts of the render that show to me it's not a photograph are the hair strands that go down the side of her face. Their positioning seems odd and it's visible they're opacity mapped. The other parts of her hair look excellent, though perhaps a little too nicely combed.

something about the hair and lips just seems a tiny bit off... The lips have a sort of painted on feeling that I can't describe, they kind of don't look to attached to the face. With that being said, this is still the most realistic human head I have ever seen. Amazing work.


*edit* another tiny thing wrong, is the area underneath the nostril. There seems to be a really hard shadow there, and that little area of skin kind of looks dead. When you look inside someone's nose, there is usually a slightly different color pattern than there is on the skin.

Of course I am being incredibly picky, It's still awesome.

*I will post a crit because just praise does not really help ya out =). Someone said right ear lobe, I agree just a tad off, also inside the right nostril, the shadow seems too sharp. This seems to be the biggest contrasting point in the image and it draws the eye, very sharp dark shadow and light skin of the right nostril. Its also smack dab in the middle of the image, tone this contrast down a bit (i.e blur) to make it easier for the viewer to be drawn to the eyes.*

One of the most realistic. One thing that detracts from the overall sense of realism is the gray shadows around the base of the nose. Light would be scattering in this area and would be more pinkish. Looks like ash. Other than that ... it's exceptional. :)

Astonishing work...it looks so real, and so much like her! Once again you prove yourself to be the king of realistic faces. There are aspects of this that don't look perfectly real, like a few strands of hair, the shirt, some of the ear...but overall, this is without a doubt the most realistifc CG face I've ever seen. And your hair has improved much since natalie.

Unfortunately, I do not know this actress but, sincerely, i believe that this is the most natural and realistic portrait i have ever seen. I see only the mouth, the contour of this and the ears a bit 3D.

It looks like an average to good studio taken photo shoot... if somebody told me computer manipulation was involved I would say.. "of course.. photoshop to improve the model's/ actress' look.. but the studio lighting was not the best of choices..."

To answer some questions:

The hair is using the standard Hair&Fur from 3dmax8, It's rendered using MR prim mode. For those who tried them, probably know that they're very very slow to render (14 hours just for the hair at 1800x1350) , but at least the result is good :).

I used couple of area photometric lights for the lightning, with GI and FG, no HDRI.

I used SSS fast skin shader for the skin. And the textures are actually very simple, and quite low res, so I can save memory for the renders. I didn't use any photo for texturing.

Also, someone mentioned about the lack of artistic value in this piece, and I'm completely agree with that. I tried adding little things like background, or maybe better pose and stuff, but in the end they all fall short :(, maybe I'm just not that good of an artists :D. Though I realized that my goal was just to create her face and nothing more.....so, at this point I'm very happy with the result :D.
