This here is my try in digital painting. I scanned my sketch and used it as base for lineart. I painted in Channels, the line art was in alfa channel for guide. The colors were put in by simply selecting inside black lines and filling with flat colors. Later added some lighting by aribrushing or dodging.
Tell me what you think.
Any c/c most welcome.

Second try. Any better?
This time I took the photograph as base for lineart. Filled the base flats the same way in Channels and later worked on Layers to add more tonal variety to the overall look.

I think you need to make the lines have more weight to them. Meaning more thick and thin variations.

I think it's very important to have line weight for the cartoon style because it helps define the form of the subject. Because you will be omitting shading to save time which is what that style is for.

You might find that illustrator or flash is a better program to use for cartoon style.

To frostblade: Thanks for your comment. I know what you mean by the cartoon style having more solid weight in lines. And here I tried one portrait with this in mind.

So here is another portrait I did. It was rather quick one.
I figured I keep exploring this style. I didn't really want it to be very clean cut look for this one as well, I like it to keep a little painterly. Hope you like it.

Hello again,
Another day another portrait.
Found a cool picture of Eugene Hutz from NYT magazine and made my version of it.
Any comments about my doodles-studies yet?

To aldog:
Thanks.
No it's not. I used Wacom tablet and pen and just selected areas with lasso tool and filled in, no layers. Worked in one layer, becasue i had the areas pre planned. I did pre planning on paper where i wanted the different shades to be.

Hello,
It's has been few weeks since I updated here with the portraits.
This last one is more towards the digital painting than lineart. I am still newbie in paining with Wacom. It is not as different as in traditional media but it takse some time to get used to brushes and opacity and all that stuff - blending!

About the picture - it' s a real person, real photo I found. It reminded me David Lachapelle style of photography, it was just a snapshot in toystore. I am always interested in real people more than fiction, although it's cool if fiction character looks like it could be a guy/girl from the street.
If you have ANY comments - don't be shy.
Hope you like it.
