The Hulk trailer had a kind of cheesy vibe to it, accented by the John Carpenter-esque music, and the silly shot where he swings the tank in circles... The Matrix trailer had STYLE, it was so damn cool. I want a quicktime so I can watch it again!

That shot is a bit off but still, no movie is perfect. Look at the first LOTR and you can pick out similar shots. Focus on the positive.

I dont see anything wrong with the shot. That was one of the coolest scenes in the trailer , and i bet it'll get the "legolas horse jump" reaction from the crowd.

If anything its the animation that seems just a little strange. The comp is great, I just think it looks similar to some of the Spider Man scenes. But of course Im being waaaaaaaay too critical. I still think its w!cked.

Whew! yah, screw Hulk, screw DD, this looks friggin amazing, the car crushing scene looks beautiful to me, and yah, maybe the animation is reminiscient of Spiderman, but that was brilliant anyway, humans moving like that will Never look right to us, because it's not natural, that's the point! :) I cannot wait for this movie to come out, although i'm wondering if the trailer is showing us scenes from both movies or just Reloaded, guess we'll find out in May

ok now i chime in i love the matrix and the trailer cant wait to be entertained again but this time i will be expecting it last time i saw the matrix it was because i was bored and a friend worked at a theater....i ended up watching that 3 times that weekend......now about the hulk i am looking forward to that too....the 'cheezy feel to it' is fine cause if you were a fam of the comics expecially when John byrne was creating them the hulk was cheezy......it should be just as entertaining (2 different animals) with classic lines like' you won't like me when i am angry'tossed in for us geeks

After watching the car jump a couple more times ive narrowed it down to one thing. Its the way the character swings his arms when he lands and jumps off the vehicle. Thats the part I find a bit odd. Its not a matter of good or bad its just how i see it. Everyone sees something different, its no big deal. Bottom line is these two movies will be incredible and im REALLY looking forward to them. The Matrix, LOTR, The Hulk, DareDevil, XMen 2.....dam 2003 is going to be full of w!cked CG.

There are two things things that I just notice from this trailer (except from the fact that it is awesome):
1. The 'letter-falling' effect is now compositing of mostly Japanese characters! That wasn't the case in 'Matrix'--check the movie or the old trailers and notice the difference. Is the special FX firm a Japanese one?
2. The fighting scenes are great, but I somehow I feel that the style of fight has changed. Maybe that's just because of the limit amount of footage being released so far.

so on the scene in question, ( man jumps on hood of car, breaks windows)
I was wondering what that is that comes out of the windows, ( after the glass!!!)
it looks like money...
I guess now we know why they built that private highway for the movie.
oh yeah, and the japanese characters? well the code that neo originally broke, there for figuring out the matrix, was written in a language that he understood cartesian binary, by changing the code to a different language, japanese hex, he will have to really study hard to be able to break this one.

first of all, this is a public forum. any work posted here, including this trailer, is open for criticism. don't tell people to 'go **** themselves' for it.
i for one am pretty disappointed with the digital double shots.
to me the shift in weight i the car shot (just before he jumps off again) looks wrong.
i gotta say the digital double shots are a dead giveaway. the shot were neo is fighting the agent smiths isn't very convincing. and i think the whole stopping a sequence and spinning it is a bit redundant. i'm all for slowing down the fight so we can see the superhuman speed and agility of the characters, but just stopping it and spinning it is a bit old hat. (before you all go telling me that the matrix invented this technique, take a look at buffalo 66 for one example of pre matrix bullet time).
the actual physical choreography of the fights looks good though.
i'm not saying the film won't be great, in fact i'm looking forward to it, and i know that most of these shots probably aren't even finished, but after all the talk of how their digital doubles are going to be indistinguishable from the real thing, i still think they stand out a mile.
if you think these characters look real, you're mad.

I agree with you on this point, though the scene is still very entertaining and eye-catching.
I think posting a trailer so early is a good way to gather opinions on the special FX of the movie; after all, everyone always wants a better (and better) movie, right?

As far as T3 is concerned.... I think the franchise has lost it's steam unfortunately, and with a name like "Rise of the Machines" you know they're planning on a part 4...

Sigma: in your second post/image you can see the hand of the actor in a very faint blur. I am too lazy to throw it in PS and circle the area that I'm talking about. I cant see the hand in the second image only the other guys thumb. You would have to address Raaven about the circles. I work with him here and he just threw it together because we thought it was funny. Just funny they forgot to render that layer.

Ahhh does anyone else think that they may have done this intentionally. (Agents flickering, etc.) The story takes place in a computerized, electronic environment where an artificial inteligience have to process billions of thoughts while maintaining an illusion on a globl scale. Wouldn't you think there would be some sort of periodic slowdown, crash, etc. (Okay I got way too deep into this matter.):surprised :hmm:

I wanted to see the trailer, but not a big fan of football, so I missed it yesterday.
But I knew when I came into work today to check CG Talk that I would find the trailer posted and a healthy topic already going. I knew I could count on you guys!
I’m stoked to see the movies. The SB Matrix trailer is phenomenal.
I’m sure in the scheme of the entire movie some things that look “out of place” may make sense once in the context of the movie.
That being said, the agent jumping onto the car did look “out of place” to me. Yea, I haven’t tried to make my own “Jackass” tape of a friend being in a fast moving car and stomping on it :D ;) , but after viewing the downloaded trailer and slowing to the frames in question, I can see now what stood out to me as unnatural when the movie was played in real time once I slowed it down.
1. When the agent hits the car, the glass gets blown out, realistic. But then a frame or two after, there is this green/white stuff that gets thrown out the window. Weird, maybe side airbags are being blown out, and yes, it did kinda look like money
2. the speed of the car NEVER changes. When the agent jumps on the car, it continues moving at the same exact speed it relation to the surrounding vehicles. I would expect the crushed car to slow down considerably because the tires would blow out and cause additional friction with the road and then to be gained on by the surrounding vehicles, but it never happens. After the agent jumps off the vehicle then flips frontside, which then looked real.
But no doubt, I’m dying to see the both Matrix films this year! Can’t wait. :bounce:
But if we had to nitpick [and this is “CG Talk” and not “We Love All Movies .com”, so I guess we have a license to nitpick CG in movies and trailers :D] do those two points seem valid?

But that trailer is amazing ! A-mazing :)

Am I the only one disapointed by the matrix trailer? I mean, the old trailer was really freakin cool, but this new one really bothers me. Some parts of it were quite neat, but I got really bothered by neos 1-against-100 agent fight scene, and the agent-jumps-on-car scene. In those scenes it was so obviously cgi it bothered me greatly. The first one had this unbeleivable realism to it. But now just so that they could create theoretically good scenes they have to resort to complete cg. Thats not a problem for me...it only is when you can really tell. I may be nitpicking but the cloth dynamics of neos coat are sub par, and the movement seems fake, if not cheesey. That last movement complaint applies for the scene when the agent hit the car. The car looked great, but the agent looked quite fake.

p.s. Im not trying to pick a fight with matrix enthusiasts, because frankly I am one of them. I'm just stating that Some of the things I loved about the "creative vision" of the first one are bing lost in some cg wet dream.

Well it's probably too late to chime in, and I'm sure everyone has moved on from this already, but I just opened the Trailer up in Combustion and looked at the Agent Car Stomp frame by frame, and IMHO I think it looks great all the way through.
My "favorite" comp screwups are in SW Attack of the Clones. Most of those arena sequences have Anakin doing some REALLY fake jumping and creature riding. Makes me LMAO every time.

Me and vancee went out to I-4 last night, and he sacrificed his car so that i could jump on the hood of it going roughly 100 miles an hour, and realized something. The windsheild did bust out faster (probably 2-3 frames faster) and i did have to swing my arms faster than he did to jump over to the other car (i wouldnt have made it had i swung them at the speed in the trailer). Also, the car did tend to slow down faster than in the trailer, but this was hardly noticable. of course we forgot to put film in the camera, so we will just have to be DUMB ****S, like you critics and say its just what we saw when we did it.
Oh yeah, ,then we stopped in a wal mart parking lot, and i threw a tank like in the Hulk trailer. And you ****UPS were correct, it didnt look anything like the hulk trailer, i had to lean back further and spin a little slower, ,because that thing was freaking heavy.
This is how ****ing stupid you people sound when you attempt to butcher .5 second clips in previews, but at least i claimed to have ****ING REFFERENCE MATERIAL. UNTIL YOU CAN SHOW PROOF THAT THEY DID IT WRONG, THEN SHUT YOUR ****ING MOUTH.

Ok, I'll give in a bit....of course anyone's allowed to critique shots, given what kind of forum this is, it's kinda inevitable, ain't it? :D
So I'll chime in and say, what stuck out to me first off in the car-jumping clip wasn't the animation, but, yes, compositing, as first mentioned...the Agent's black levels are too dark/black for the rest of the scene, or just overall too much black on him. It would seem to blend in better toned down a bit to dark green, with all the diffuse lighting and atmospheric haze. IMHO of course. ;) pick pick pick...nit nit nit...watch it, don't be biting my head off now :scream: heheeee. Chill out, people, geez.
On a whole different topic...anyone here read the Philosophy and the Matrix section on the official site? Or the book out on the same topic? Interesting stuff....:surprised

For some of us this is our line of work, or the line of work we are busting ass to get into. All of you guys that get pissed cuz some of us choose to dissect the trailer need to mellow out. If you are interested in becoming a CG artist for a movie or a Compositor, then YES it IS important to be able to look at a peice of film and spot differences. And YES we WILL be looking for mistakes
There is no difference between us and football players watching "films" of previous efforts. How about the guys that wanna do games??? Can they comment on the animations and sprites used in games??
This is a CG forum , not a Warner Bro's fanboy site. You don't wanna hear people dissect trailers??? Then find a different thread, but don't sit here and shit all over those of us that are hoping to one day have OUR work critiqued by the next gen CGI'ers.
But of course, this is all IMHO...:D

actually, i think this is the kind of message that creates the problem here, not picking apart or analyzing a shot.
it's not a matter of what's real, but what is believable. you don't have to be a tennis pro to understand how a tennis ball moves through space. you only have to understand velocity, weight, torque, etc. and people do this subconciously all the time. that's why it's easy to pick up on something that doesn't look quite right, even if you don't know exactly how that something really behaves.
i think the problem here is that there are three kinds of people in this forum: those who like to say what's wrong, those how like to understand why something is wrong, and those who have nothing better to do than to make fun of the first two.

By the way, ...I wanted to add one more thing before I give up on this thread.
The dudes that say " Let's see you do better" are using the WORST possible reasoning for an argument.
So basically, unless you have a multiplatinum selling album, you have no right to say anything about a song on the radio?? I hate to think that untill I've written and produced, or HELL even been IN a TV show I can't say whether or not I think it's good.
You don't have to be a musician to know that a song sucks, and NO we DON'T have to be Pro's to know that a clip looks fake, or that we don't like something.
For the guys who wanted to know who did the FX, it was ESC FX. Also Sony Pictures Imageworks is working on some of the shots.
Esc is even looking for some poeple to work with them so go check it out. www.escfx.com
You might become one of them... then come here and share with us your opinion of what is being said here. BtW...any Esc artists around?
hehe..
Happy criticising!

The 50 - Agents - szene is weird... but in a cool way, looks like the Machines are getting close to what's possible in the Matrix... (or it's just the fact I've never seen 50 perfectly identical copys of Elrond leave a building... )
That Car-Jump looks really a little odd, but hey... it's still cool, and if that's the only problem in the movie... okaaay... :D

(For the 1-vs-50 scene), Neo's clothes are apparently (at least they look like) cg; also the depth of field effect--Somehow Neo's head seems sticking out of his body. So do you all think that this scene is full cg?
Ya, I think everything in the scene is CG... in fact, the characters in the shots look like untextured CG, and I think that is what threw me off... I don't think the shots are finished, they still have 3 months to work on them...

I suppose I may as well have a go at being nitpicky (keepin in mind that I absolutely love the trailer and am desperate to see the films). The only thing that I picked up on (and its what I believe is most responsible for the cg look) is the cloth simulation on the agents clothes.
If you look at the burly burl (Neo v. Smiths) you can see that the agents clothes don't really appear to be creasing they instead have that really bad cardboard tube look to them. Its worse at the shoulders where the padding just turns into a big bump instead of the really sharp diffence between the padded shoulder and the cloth sleeve (just look at the shot that luv2xlr8 posted to see how a jackets padding will keep the top of the jacket as flat as possible and then look at the three shots that Sigma posted of the fight to see the difference).
I think this is the reason why the car jump stands out so much, there's no sence of speed being kicked up by the agents jacket flapping in the wind and his arms end up thickening into this wierd sort of low-land gorilla pose.
Anyway, I'm sure this is all stuff that can be fixed and did I heppen to mention just how much I liked this trailer regardless?

Hey dont blame sigma for anything. I was the one who went through frame by frame and saw the agent disappear then come back. I was going to post the images myself but when i went to attach them I found that the button was missing so since I work with my buddy sigma he said he'll post them for me.
Oh and whats wrong with dissecting great work? Just because you can't do something doesn't mean you can't find flaws in it. The disappearing agent is obviously a mistake that they missed, or they saw it too late to change it before the commercial was to air.
Sometimes when you watch an animation you see that something is weird but cant put your finger on it, and its only by going through frame by frame that you can really see what is making the motion odd. The first time I saw the agent jump off the hood of the car it looked weird to me so I started going through frame by frame to see why. If you want to be a good CG artist then you have to learn to critique your own work as well as other's work. And besides...how do you know that someone in here who says something is wrong with a part in the trailer can't do better him/herself? There's some amazing people on these forums. So dont get your panties in a twist.

But remember this wasn't created to be seen one frame at a time, it's meant to be seen in motion. So just because something looks funny for 1/24th of a second doesn't mean it doesn't work at full speed. It's like when you do successive breaking of joints in 2d. That one frame where Screwy Squirrels elbow is facing the wrong direction looks odd on it's own, but when run at normal speed and in it's normal context, it all flows beautifully.
Not saying there is anything wrong with going through real life movement frame by frame, but that doesn't mean some of the oddities you might find are mistakes.

^^^^ What he said :)
I understand that some things that look completely wrong frame by frame look really good at full speed. I've seen some 2d animation where if you go through it frame by frame you see that sometimes a character has 5 feet, the arms dont match from one frame to the next, the motion is extremely erratic...but then you watch it full speed and you can see that it looks good in motion. It looks like the character is scampering around like crazy, his feet moving so fast you can barely see them. The problem is when it looks odd at normal speed. If you can't see the problem after playing it back a few times at full speed you go through frame by frame to try and break it down.
Despite all this arguing the movie still looks like it will be awesome and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to going through the cg portions of my dvd too. And you can be sure I'll be framing through it :) Sometimes there's no better way to see how something was done.

The thing is he's trying to find fault in something that isn't wrong in the first place. One of the things that makes the Matrix so interesting is that they don't try to be held to reality as a standard. So just because it loosk funky to him doesn't meant it's funky to anyone else.

During the 100 agent smith fight, the Matrix is pouring all it's system resources into controlling them against Neo, and like an old 286, the system chokes and locks up.
Every other area of the Matrix freezes (people, etc, frozen where they stand) while the system deals with the fight.

I'm trying to find fault in something that isn't wrong? When I look at that car jump it does not look right to me. And dont give me that crap about not being held up to reality as a standard. EVERYTHING is compared to reality. But only to some degree. Even if neo jumps 300 feet up into the air, when he goes to make that jump he should still wind up and push off HARD. And when that agent makes the jump from the hood of that car it should still look natural even if the jump itself is impossible in reality.
I dont understand why you guys get so angry when someone finds a fault in a movie. You don't have to defend the matrix to the death if someone finds a fault in it. It isn't perfect. But its so damn good who cares :) I'm so hyped about this movie.
I'm done arguing. But I'm sure there's one thing we can agree upon. This movie is going to kick ass.

What's wrong with the car? It's a real car, it got smashed just like that, and they even paid a stuntman to do it 4 times paying a fat chunk of cash. Maybe if you compared it to a REAL 1000lb man jumping on a car and could point out how it's not realistic...? And if you are talking physics, the car shouldn't slow down if the crushing force land on the front moving forward, but AFTER he jumps off, so it looks fine. Remember the force comes from ABOVE onto a PIVOTING end of the car hence the flip.
Ya I don't think it looks quite right either...
You could get into the whole question of why the hell the car gets crushed anyways???
I mean, when I jump on a car I don't crush it, and I am a bigger guy than he is...

Matrix is supposed to simulate the reality, isn't it? It is made to make humans at that time to believe that they are living in our time, that's why they are making the simulation as identical to our world as possible. All rules in the matrix applying on the environment, before being hacked or cracked, should be identical with our reality. Now we find that the car-crashing scene is unrealistic in our sense; that can only be attributed to the compositing/special FX, but not the matrix. If it's really the matrix's problem, then we'll run into problems like "why 'matrix chicken' have to taste like chicken". This will eventually lead to the complete break down of the idea behind the movie, with the matrix world possibly completely different from ours (e.g. having everyone flying (perhaps with wings!) instead of walking). No, we suppose the matrix does know how our world works. We already have the ability to simulate realistic physical interactions (e.g. car-crash) with cg; the matrix should have no problem doing even better in its time.
noisewar
01-28-2003, 09:58 AM
You forgot the fact that Agent Smith and Neo have powers that are beyond the normal simulation of the Matrix, and that is why their fight is worthwhile to their respective causes. Neo is able to manipulate the Matrix because he is the One, and Agent Smith can too because he's there to stop the One.
Ticonderoga
01-28-2003, 10:06 AM
Want I mean is mainly about the car, which doesn't have the ability to go beyond normal simulation; as for Neo-vs-Smith, the problem is more of the cg than the story. These two problems are both solvable through, thus they are not really that important at this stage.

on a slightly different note, anyone seen avalon? your talk of agents disappearing because the matrix was slowing down reminded me of it.
it's got some really nice bits involving time lags (because there's a lot of people using the server) and parts where ash reaches the borders of the playing area. she starts to break up as she moves towards it, and the backdrop is low res. really nice touches. great film.

Ok, this movie is going to rock my a**!!!
As for the car-crusher. Think of it this way. When the Matrix encounters a major disturbance it does something weird. When something radical is changed, a deja-vu happens. When a helicopter flies into a skyscraper, the collision creates a freaky wave, distorting the building, which then erupts in glass explosions. Wouldn't it seem true to the story, that maybe, just maybe, the car reacted differently due to the Matrix not handling the major weight of Agent on the car?
Just my two cents.

When they were showing me the inside of Tippet's office himself...I copped a feel on the Return of the Jedi oscar that was just laying right out out on his desk! I swear I think I was turned on.

Haha, that is frikkin hilarious!
I had heard that they dumped ESC and moved all their stuff over to Sony Digital. Anyone else hear anything about that?

I agree, the compositing is a little weird. The keying on the blue screening isn't feathered enough. But it doesn't really bother me... I like the the weird motion blurring they did, it's more like it's being smeared. Makes it all look sort of surreal in a way. Does anyone know if they used multiple cameras for the rotation shots like they did like the first movie? Or did they replace the actors with 3d characters this time?

Thats simply not true. Esc does the majority of the fx shots. Cfx got shut down and Imageworks took over their share.

I think a lot of people are agreeing that the hood-jumping action looks odd. What I want to know is why does the car get smashed? Do the agents weigh a ton? If so then when they walk around the world why don't they break floorboards and cause elevators to plummet to the basement? And don't say "because it's in the matrix!!" The matrix is a realistic simulation of realworld physics. Yes, Agent Smith is very strong and quick but he cannot fly. He cannot alter the laws of physics in the Matrix. Only Neo can do that.
On a side note, does the CG agent Smith's head look a little too big?

from a physics standpoint you're completely wrong about that. after jumping off the car, the car would speed UP, not slow down, due to a change in total mass (therefore momentum).

The agent can crush the rules because they are not bound by the physical limitations of the Matrix:)
btw, day-YUM, and HELLS YEAH and I CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER!!! I DEMAND INSTANT GRATIFICATION!!!:argh: :argh: :argh:

But if the agents are not bound by the physical limitations of the Matrix why do they have to jump from car to car? Why don't they just fly over to whomever they are chasing? And if they are really not bound by physical limitations why do they use guns?
Don't get me wrong, I am super stoked for the movie but I am concerned about the new CG stuff they are adding. Look at what happened to the Star Wars movies.

Morpheus: I've seen an agent punch through a concrete wall. Men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing
but air. Yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules. Because of that,
they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be.

There is alot of force there. He is jumping off the car, which is going at 60mph or whatever, so he is pushing himself over 60mph to jump to the next car. You factor in the forces of gravity, vertical and horizontal acceleration, wind resistance, that's alot of force then. I was in a car accident, ran into a pole, car was totalled at 30mph, crumpled up really really well. They are made to do it. The question therefore to ask, are there any bug splatterings on the agents face and are his shoes scratched up?
Where is the attention to detail?
When the Hulk swings around the tank, wouldn't it fall apart?

While I admit the the Ducati is mighty purty I would take the r6 over the ducati for 2 reasons:
Its lighter (from what I hear), and I'd feel like pure crap if i dropped the ducati which I'm more than likely to do ;)
Back on subject tho. The Cg with neo fighting the agents and the agents participating in traffic are very cheesy and kinda remind me of spiderman. I personally liked the cheesiness of the cg in spiderman I dunno why I just do. However the first thing my dad said after watching the trailer for the Hulk was and I quote "Its a f**king cartoon" I agree the cg in the Hulk is waaay to fake, looks a bit rushed. (I apologize if the person that did the cg for The Hulk reads this post but saidly its the truth)

Yeah, I know what you mean Revilo. We are all biased in the world of CG since we obviously have an interest above and beyond the average person. It is interesting to see how these commercials played with "regular" people. My roommates are teachers who drink beer and are pretty mainstream. They saw the Hulk commercials and the first thing they said was "Fake". So the average person definitely can see that something is not right.

Asbolutely untrue... ESC is handling the majority of the shots. BTW all the FX companies report to the mothership EON, which is the Wacky Bros.' own company I believe. That's also located in East Bay.
