Hello
I think you could buy rhino 3 and negociate with your retailer to have rhino 4 at the release for free , because the release come soon.
If you can't, I think you're better to wait for rhino4 , that's more interesting for modeling and rendering.
sorry for my english :p

what u can prolly do is to ask ur local retailer if they could give you Rhino 3 at a academic price and give you a Rhino 4 demo or a full trial version ??
i dun think they will give you a free Rhino 4 if u were to buy Rhino 3 thou...
in singapore, academic pricing for Rhino 3 is around $550 singapore dollars, its around $330 - $350 USD.

If your a student many of the improvements may not be as usefull as you think if your just trying to learn the software. Also you do not hafto upgrade every year if you dont want to -Ive had rhino 3 for almost 2 years.
as quoted from their website http://www.rhino3d.com/nr.htm
Goals for Rhino 4.0
Improved modeling tools, including better variable-radius blend tools and improved Booleans.
New editing tools, including direct polysurface (solids) editing tools and command history.
Interface enhancements, including new SmartTrack™ technology and more advanced display options.
Improved 2-D drawing tools, including line types, line weights, hidden lines, hatching, dimensions, leaders, page layouts, and printing/plotting.
Better mesh support. All editing tools should work on mesh objects as well as on NURBS objects.
More robust third-party software developer tools.
Hundreds of enhancements to existing tools. We are tracking more than 2,000 wish list items.
It is said to be released later 2006 so its not a very long wait if you want them. The copy of rhino where your school\course is should last you till then shouldnt it?

Rhino 4.0 Final - Release projected to be later in 2006..heck could be december 30/2006
i guess it's just wait and see.
info:
From Mcneel Rhino site:"You can continue to use the educational license after you are out of school. Only when you upgrade to the next version of Rhino, would you buy the commercial upgrade and pay the commercial upgrade price."
Mcneel-rhino is one of those products that the changes you will see in V4 will actually be for the better....as usual.:)!-they have a long history of actually listening to thier users and rapidly.
Also even with the student version the V4 beta is available.
I "suppose? you could run the beta on the laptop...it is a beta though and risk of crashing are possible.
