View Full Version : Subtle Plastic Texture?

I have been trying to get a convicing plastic texture to work and am running into problems with it. I am trying to get that slightly bumpy surface found on most printers, scanners, computer cases and the like. Here is an example (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0302/pma2003/kodak/printerdock6000.jpg)

As you can see in the image the difference in the specular highlights is very slight but it is noticable. I can get a good surface up close but when I pull back from the product to render the shot I need I lose the detail.

I have tried variations of reflective dispertion (at very low quality to get the grain), noise set to .01 in the bump / diffusion / spec color channels and displacement.

Any ideas? I will take a look in the recent "car paint fleck" thread for some clues as well.

Thanks. SP.

i find white plastic is hard to do in cinema. colored plastic is no problem but white... darn, only get some gray every time. I dont know about bumpy surfaces though, sorry :shrug:

@jimstein:
Dont know if this is exactly what you want--but heres my white plastic recipe (from Rui Batista a while back on Post Forum--used it ever since)

Color channel: white 100%
Luminance channel: white 100%
Diffuson channel (with lum checked) 50% (adjust to your liking)
Works GREAT

Nice Adam--
I also put a touch of SSS set to 30% strength on your file--which I think enhances plastic look.

I just happen to revisit this thread, and the tips you have given are absolutely perfect… Plastic is fantastic.

Cheers!
