"HOW TO EAT FRIED WORMS is the feature adaptation from New Line and Walden Media of Thomas Rockwell’s popular young adult book from 1973. It opens nationwide today (Aug. 25, 2006). It’s about an 11-year old that inadvertently challenges the class bully on his first day at a new school — and must eat 10 worms in one day.
“We were asked to make the mood funnier,” Tartakovsky told AWN. “To say it’s OK to laugh, setting a wacky tone in the beginning with the boy throwing up.”
With a crew of five based in their Studio City, California, office (some of whom worked on SAMURAI JACK and DEXTER’S LABORATORY), Tartakovsky spent five weeks churning out five minutes of animation. About three minutes were used in the film. “This was a huge time restraint and we worked by the seat of our pants,” Tartakovsky continued. “There are no iconic illustrations in the book, so we did a ‘70s SCHOOL HOUSE ROCKish feel.” He particularly enjoyed playing off the rivalry between the two brothers."
