I need some help on this light bulb material, I am going for photo realism. I am new to max and don't know how to get the right effect. I am using Max 5 and the light tracer with one omni light only effecting the specular light. I am going for whatever effect is the most lifelike.

Any advise?

You might model several layers... the actual matt bulb layer is translucent and is on the inside of the bulb (right?) then there is a glass layer on top.... The glass usually reflects the environment more so work on that (raytraced reflections)

Check out the free material library Sticky. get it, and see how materials were made. use them as a base.
Cheers!
