Keep working with Photoshop. Don't read tutorials, don't take advice. (Except the advice I give you here.)

Set a goal, and find out how to do it on your own.

The best way of learning is teaching yourself, and then when you think you're a master at it, compare your methods of doing something with how others do it. Chances are, you'll have better ways of doing everything.

I teach myself every application I own, and in the end, only 10% of the time do I find that someone else has a quicker or better way of doing it.

Honestly though skier1185 ... unless you want to be a hermit it wouldn't hurt to talk and listen to those who know how. Advice is like opinions, everyone has some. But, what you choose to use will make a difference in your art. Don't let others be over influential in your work.

Tutorials are good if you're really a newbie with the tools. Doesn't hurt to learn about the software and what it can do before you start experimenting on your own.

i dunno, i know im new here and all but im deff not new to learning new techniques and software and i always thought that if u need a start or a push in a direction (any direction, not just the right one) and there is a resource available, use it.....

i understand what matt was getting at but i think you should read up on some tutorials, but dont stick that the one way of doing it that they will show... work at the same piece and see how many ways you can create it...

if you didnt you may get a great understanding and experience but itll take a bloody long time :)
