I thought you guys might know :)

I'd stick with something that has clean lines, preferably an aircraft with a tubelike profile & simple shape.

Examples might be a Mig15, Mig21, an F104, a Sabre, or something similar.

You can find a good selection of simple 3-view drawings at suurland.com & in most aviation modelling magazines.

I have a fairly lengthy (if a bit old) tute for Lightwave you could take a look at (if only for the drawings). Look here:-

Ron... Ermmm SkyRaider3D has a Max tute too which I assume you can get to via the link in his sig line.

Hi Erik,

Yes, I know one :)

I've recommended this one to a number of people, actually, and in fact it was one of my first models too for just the reasons you mention. I've made itonce with nurbs, once with splines/patches (unfinished), but I'd recommend you to use polymodelling/meshsmooth as it's fastest and easiest (see here for a great MAX tutorial (http://www.wide3d.no/tutorials/Car_nurms_01.htm)). I can provide you with cropped-to-fit blueprints for this plane too or even a MAX setup with them, saving you the tedious bits of setting up blueprints.

The type I am talking about is the Messerschmitt Me 263 rocket interceptor:

http://luftarchiv.de/flugzeuge/messerschmitt/me263.jpg

It's a very basic shape - circular cross-section except for the tail bit. Only two wings and a vertical tail. The bubble canopy is quite simplistic too.

The only tricky bit is the landing gear, but for a first airplane model I wouldn't bother with that. Neither would I cut out ailerons, flaps, and so on. Just texture all these items.

Let me know if you're interested or drop me an e-mail (skyraider3d@hotmail.com).

PS. Alternatively if you prefer modern aircraft better, try a MiG-21. Also circular cross-section and very simple wings. This in fact was my very first 3D model.
If you don't like this one either, I might know another few hundred good ones to start with perhaps! ;)

Andreas, that is LOVELY! :)
Great model and great detail too. Looks very promising! It will look stunning in aluminium dope with polished engine plating.
I love your choice of subject as well. It's original and inspiring. Much better than say a Hurricane!

I took a few pictures of a Hind (it's a Hind right, not a Hart?) on an airshow here in England last summer. Some are digital at fairly high resolution, so they might show some handy details and colours. Let me know if you're interested or drop me an e-mail.

Really nice Andreas!

Sweden had a few harts as well during WWII if i remember correctly.

Now you'll just have to make sure the materials and textures will be up to the same quality as that excellent model :)

I'm tweaking my materials for my Draken now, although they looked good and like a real object it was not like the metal on the real thing...

For Erik and others that wish to make their first aircraft model in 3DSMAX, I have created a little setup that will help you through the first tedious steps of setting up drawings in your viewports, to act as templates. You can download it here:

MAX5 blueprint setup for Messerschmitt Me 263 A-1 (http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/temp/Me263_Max5_setup.zip)

This file should work in MAX6 too and likely in MAX4 as well.

Good luck with your creation! :)

Lots of great modeled airplanes here.
My humble contribution:
it is the IAR 88, designed late in the war by the romanian engineers to use the DB engine of the bf109, modified with a large diameter two stage mechanical compressor, obtaining 1600HP at 9000m.
It was supposed to estalish air dominance over the 1944 romanian skies at the altitudes that saw the bulk of the fights with the american air forces.

Hehehe, I was half-expecting already that it was made up, as I had never heard of this project. But you made such a nice little story around it that I started to believe it was real. :)

The plane looks nice, by the way, though the low-poly-ness of the tail is very evident.

Coincidentally I am working on a Romanian plane as well, which never existed (though it was a real project). I will show it here soon, once it's presentable :)

Skyraider3D
04-14-2004, 07:01 PM
Fuertes, nice models! Just be sure not to use pure white or fully saturated red. These colours look too bright on a monitor (and could even damage a TV). Also some of the other colours could do with a little desaturation to increase realism.
The green on the Chaika is spot-on though, don't change that! :)

Enedan, is that a Ju 188 in the background?

Dirit, Gracias, lo de tus pilas me ha recordado a las latas que hacía yo cuando aprendía a modelar. :)

Skyraider, Thanks for your comment and for the warning. I was aware of the problem, indeed all the white that you could see in the images are actually light grey and the red color are also darkened. The lights that I use to lit the scene make the textures look a bit more brighter than they really are, but it's true that the republican flag in the rudder still need some work. I did some test in the flight simulator engine and in Shockwave format which you could see here: CR32 (http://perso.wanadoo.es/jlgf/trastero/gce/cr32_ts.dcr) and here chato (http://perso.wanadoo.es/jlgf/trastero/gce/chato.dcr), I`m quite pleased with the current results. In any case both planes are WIP and I'm still working on them.:wip:

Fuertes, splendid! I love shockwave models, as you can probably tell from my website ;)

One comment though... the font on the I-15 seems too modern too me. I think it needs to be straighter with the corners squared-off a little. Some links that may be helpful:

(notice the serial is black on this one... I don't have a photo to verify, but I believe the font is accurate)

Hi Marius!

I like your model. How you create the texture. With Photoshop our something?

fuertes
04-17-2004, 05:30 PM
Answering about the lettering of the I-15, you are fully right, I used this font because it was the more suitable I has. I found the same problem with the Fiat and I end up painting the numbers in Photosop, I suppose I'll do the same for the Chato in the near future.
But the color of serial number of that decal sheet is wrong. This plane was flown by the leader of the 2nd. escuadrilla of the 26 fighter group (whose name I cannot remember now, shame for me :( ) and hence while the rest of the planes of the escuadrilla have black numbers this one have white serial number.
This is a rather unusual way to paint the leader plane because re-paint the serial number in white was the method used in the I-16 units. Normally most of the I-15 units accustomed to use geometrical signs to distinguish the leader while others re-paint in the rudder the number in white and in bigger size. The "Escuadrilla Lacalle", in which Tinker fought, used to paint big white numbers without the "CA" letters in all its planes.
I'm far from be an expert in paint schemes and I couldn't found any photo of this particular plane but I knew about this scheme from three different sources and was confirmed by veterans so I'm fairly sure that are correct.

Heres my first serious attempt at a model, a Cessna 152 Aerobat.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~nos/wip.jpg

Im just having a bit of a problem with warping of my texture after applying a meshsmooth. The texture is warping along the seams of the different pieces that flatten is making in uvw unwrap (max 6). Help would be very much appreciated!

Skyraider3D
04-30-2004, 06:45 PM
MAX is really bad with this. As far as I know, the only way you can get proper mapping is to map your model after meshsmooth (when it's a collapsed mesh). It's a shame really, as it would make life a lot easier...
PS. Don't use automatic unwrapping. It can never be as good as when unwrapping manually.

Crox
04-30-2004, 06:54 PM
Thanks Skyraider3d, Im starting to apreciate the amount of work you guys put into your models, unwrapping after a meshsmooth is going to be a killer! :)

Skyraider3D
04-30-2004, 09:21 PM
You can do it two ways. One way is described in the tutorial on my website (click link below). This way is rather simplistic but fast. It can also be combined with using MAX's mix-maps for more complex shapes.

The second method is more time-consuming: proper UV Unwrapping. This can be much simplified too, by breaking up your low-poly mesh into numerous different material IDs. After this add Meshsmooth and then collapse the model. The high-poly mesh can now easily be broken down by selecting the individual bits by material ID, and map each section seperately. This way the high-poly mesh unwraps like it were still low-poly. With this technique I've managed to easily and cleanly unwrap models that were well over 100,000 faces. It saves a lot of time, especially on the wings. These would otherwise be a nightmare to handle when splitting up top and bottom halves.

I hope this all makes sense :)

Crox
05-01-2004, 11:20 AM
Yep, it makes perfect sense. Breaking up the mesh by material id sounds like the way to go. I was concerned I was going to have to physically drag around poly's in a high poly mesh.

Thanks for you help, much appreciated!

I don't know if you were talking baout mine, but there's no current animation I want to put up. 0] The only one I do have is before the sphere is welded to the cylinder of the fuselage, and looks like crap, so I'm waiting to texture it before I animate it again. I've been using Maya (not just screwing around animating spheres) for like three weeks now, so you'll have to give me time. 0] I'm learning as much as I can as fast as I can.

Hi
I have been in contact with people at Eduard (a palstic model company)recently and they sent me this 3D model of their new Fokker DVII 1/48th scale kit in IGES format.
They are using Unigraphics CAD software to create their models.
Which much to my surprise imports just about perfectly into Microstation (the software I'm using)
You can see a couple of places where surfaces dropped out or got a little corrupted.
But overall - I'm extremly happy about the succsess of the translation.

The renderings represents the Eduard file without any mods on my part.
All i did was to define a material - set up some lights and view parameters
and there it is
from the moment I opened the CD - until I I finished rendering these these images was about 3 hours.
and a VERY enjoyable 3 hours it was

for my purposes - I'll have to do quite a bit of re-modeling so that I can depict a 1:1 DVII
and also so that I can get the surfaces to respond to the maps the way i need them to.
But, a lot of the hard work has already been done
which is figuring out where everything goes in the first place.

Pretty cool

the jeff haneman sig is a strat shape, and they discontinued it due to controversial inlays.

and to answer your questions, yes to both. its a real model, not available in the states though, i just flipped the head stock. (its basically the same body as the alex liaho sig (children of bodom)).

What game is it from? and is that the acctual poly model from ingame or from cutscenes?

I want to fly it ;)

Thanks, MonkeyMeat. The images I posted are ingame screens of an old sim called Jane's WWII FIGHTERS. A few of us are trying to keep the old sim alive. All the mods are free downloads. Just head over to http://www.ww2fighters.org/ (WWII FIGHTER HQ)

These days the only place to find a copy of the sim is ebay.

LOL,

Hey Rammjager

I have that game I havent played it in years. .
Yah it did have some impressive graphics, , , to bad it lacked a bit in ... being an intersting game. . . good sim, , but got boring,,,

I been playing Aces High for the last 2 years, and that is not a graphics oriented game, , , not yet they still working on AH2
But its a damn great game,,,, I recomend any one who like WW2 sims and wants to play with up to 700 people at the same time
check out. . . www.hitechcreations.com
(yes that was a shameless plug  )

anyways great work on that Model, , , , I used to play WW2 Fighters all night long against AI , great detail in that game.

hmmmm I should go fly my Typhoon.......

textures are still mirrored while I figure out surface settings.

haha and skyraider, this is no specific junkers... I've stolen details from all different models, no such unit existed. Its more of a" lets get it done quick so I can use it in my animation "than trying to get an accurate model (I know I know, the shame)

I've followed this thread from beginning to end (unfortunately it has kept me up insanely late) and the 3d work is absolutely stunning.

I am in the process of choosing a 3d package. It seems that the majority of the work is in 3D Studio Max. I don't believe this says anything other than it has a wide audience but the work produced by many of the artists is amazing. Lightwave, the other package I'm researching, seems to be used in some of the posts as well (with incredible results) but only a fraction of the 3D Max posts.

I don't want to start a flame war. I don't want to detract from the purpose of this thread. If it should be moved elsewhere that is fine, please tell me.

But, is there something to be said about one package is easier for 3d modeling of aircraft than another? Or is it simply reduced to "whatever you are comfortable with?"

Thanks

05-30-2004, 12:15 PM
Hi,

I have used Lightwave, Max and Maya, you could say, the big 3 for this kind of thing. To be honest, it doesn't matter much at all which one you use (or for that matter any other modeller). I think they all have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Go for whichever one you prefer to work with. Because there IS a definate difference in the interface and workflow.

Good luck with your choice,

Wiek

I deceided to change the model into the turret equipped variant which took some time to finish.Textures on the fuselage are complete the wings will receive an overwork.

Well, I’ve been lurking here for ever. You know, drooling and wondering if I could ever get the guts up to post some of my work......Well, this project does not match most of what I see here but I't is the best I've done so far and at least I'm learning and getting better. I'm getting better to a big extent due to this forums great posts.

Among the first to impress me were Skyriader3D, mmiller, Arai, and the list is too long…. Anyway, here is Lockheed L049A Constellation C/N 1970, the “Star of Switzerland” TWA N90831. In real life she was one of the first airliners to fly tanscontinental and Intercontinental flights non-stop. She currently sits, restored, in the desert at the Pima Air and Space Meuseum, in Tucson, Arizona. I hope you will enjoy her “dance” through the Flight Simulator 9 skies……

Nice image - has a great overall look.

a couple of observations if you don't mind
I think it might look better if the left side was not cropped such that it touches the circle of the engine nacell. maybe if you included some of the starboard wing it would flow a little better. Also might want to get rid of some of the background top and bottom.
I just think this might better accentuate the nice dynamic comp you have already.

also - there are a couple of places where you are getting some thin pixelated highlights.
The left sides of the engine intakes is a good example.
might look better if you just did a little snmoothing in Pshop.
I like to use the smudge tool in cases like this.
do you have some kind of anti-aliasing function you could turn on?

ALL:
Man, am I humbled, you guys are too nice! This particular model is purely a GMAX creation and the image is purely a Century of Flight screen capture. Nothing more, nothing less, no touch up in PhotoShop just the FS9 render engine with time set about 15 minutes before sun down and Heavy thunderstorm clouds with no percipatation.
I am working on a MAX version with more "up close" detail and textures for high resolution renders. If I get anywhere close to some of the stuff I see on this forum, then I will be happy!

If you also enjoy the flight Sim world, this airplane will be available, free, sometime next month with a flight dynamics package done by the "fabled" and great FSAviator. We are currently in the first part of Beta testing.

mmiller:
I agree with your suggestions about composition. Unfortunately I will probably never get that exact shot again in FS so I will have to strive to do better with a final Render image. I'm working on it and hopefully after I get the model out to the FS community I can concentrate on doing something nice outside of FS9.

Here is another shot taken on a flight and approach to Santa Barbara last evening about 5 minutes before sun down.....

Yep, I swear that is just a simple screen capture. The word is that FS10 is on its way and will take it up even another couple of notches.....Still way crude to what you guys do with independent renders but not bad for a real time simulator....

For those of you that are Mesh junkies, as I am, here is a shot of the wire mesh from the Perspective window.... She is a little high on Poly count to be a game model but works quite nicely on medium range computers in MSFS.

Was doing some houscleaning recently and I found some old work.
The Camel image is dated on the back April 9, 1985.
vax based integraph CAD software with dedicated workstations.
I believe it cost about 30k a seat way back when.

as you can see the rendering capabilities were extremly limited.
No shadows
No maps
No material/spectral properties.
and no ability to export an image - we had to actualy shoot a photo of the monitor.

The stealth fighter image isn't dated, but I figure it was done around 87
Based on the old testers kit which came out before the F117 was declassified.

i figured you guys woud find this amusing :-)

I like the star trek shuttle very much. nice illustration style.

LemHi Lem
Thanks
I can see how you might think that image is depicting a star trek vehicle.
But, it was supposed to be a stealth fighter.
I based it on a kit that testers put out prior to the declassification of the F117.
As you can see there guess was a little off.

the background was two big cylinders and I got the panel lines by turning on line elements after rendering.
at the time - I was pretty proud of that image ;-)

I was testing her Saturday night and came across an image and just barely captured it from the screen before it dissappeared. Check out the atmospherics in Flight Simulator 9, they continue to amaze me......This image is cropped as I didnt have time to zoom into a tighter shot before the vapor trail began to dissappear.

Star of Switzerland Dancing in the Mist:

http://fsdzigns.com/images/Mist%20Dancing_00a.jpg

This shot was taken at Fl 250 with an OAT of -25 degrees Cent. so she was putting out contrails at altitude. I had the weather set up for 5/8 borken clouds to 32,000 feet. She was just begining to fly into a large bank of clouds While I was rolling here over hard onto her right side to try and get better lighting conditions when this scene appeared. I havent been able to repeat it yet as I'm busy getting her ready for public release next week but I certainly will be trying this again, as soon as I have some time......

hope you enjoy,

cheers,

The Constellation looks absolutely great, congrats

Ronnie, as usual very nice aircraft. Where the canopy really that rounded in nose? I always thought it was much like in do17.

Thanks guys :D

Lem, this is the later high-speed light-weight T model (recce version of the S), which was more streamlined than the A/D models that you are referring to. The C/G models didn't even have a glass nose. If you compare the Ju 88 T to the Ju 88 A, you will also notice that the gondola under the cockpit was removed, as were the dive brakes.

Hi
Can you say what the poly limits and mesh format warbirds use for the planes?

Just wondering.. Do they use player made models in game. Or is that a offline thing .

Lem

Hi dmac,
currently the poly limit for single engine aircrafts is 5000 and for multi engine aircrafts it is 9000. I try to stay 500 faces below that limit since usually 1 or 2 pilot figures will be added later.
The models can use up to 40 sub materials (the less the better, since every sub material will be loaded into memory.
No alpha channel allowed in skin to prevent online cheating.
models use 2x 512 or 2x1024 pixel uncompressed tga bitmaps as textures.

No need to produce different LoD variants, 1 LoD mesh will be produced inhouse which then will be used for 1manual LoD switch and also used for the shadow model.

Models will be then included in online and offline game.

There are a few player made models in game already. Most are remakes of the original artwork, either because the models were very inaccurate or the company didnt planed to introduce the aircraft model because of their limited resources.

Players who contribute to the game are organized in a so called PDC (player development corps)

Looks good Lem! My only comment is the nose... it looks a little blunt. Perhaps it's the Warbirds viewer which often make planes look a bit chubby. O yes, and the star&bar on the wing looks over-bright. Is it a decal placed in-game?

Lem
08-30-2004, 09:00 AM
yeah ronnie,
ya right about the nose. rounded it a bit more now.
the blue of the decals is same rgb number i used for earlier us aircrafts too
thx for the comments :)

will start now to paint it like a 50ies airliner for personal carrier ops, maybe i can get them finally to accept masks for reflections in game ....would make things much easier than the ineffective usage of sub materials.

Nice one! I like the original angle. The style very much remind me of heavily retouched wartime photos as seen in newspapers and propaganda leaflets and such.

how random.. i find such an old active thread the day after i finish (sorta) modelling my first airplane :)

http://www.certaindoompossibly.com/pics/plane.jpg

its based on the kawasaki ki 102a blueprints i found at the onno van braam site, though i cut a few corners here and there and went for a toy-like appearance instead.

For those of you that have trouble texture mapping their aircraft, I've just written a "little" story on texture mapping aircraft in a more sophisticated way that my old texture mapping tutorial.

Please have a look. I hope it will be useful to some of you! :D

PS. This "tutorial" was originally written for Military-Meshes.com (http://www.military-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3249).

Hi there ... I have looked all the 63 pages you guys posted and, obviously I am impressed. Congratulations to all.

Now, kid business:

I'm trying to do a boeing 747, but I have some issues. One of them is to close (or blend) the hole of the boeing butt.

Take a look:

http://www.imaginara.com.br/xpress/making/maya/modelando_boeing3.jpg

Another thing is: a looked for all google stuff (almost all... hehehe) to modeling an airplane or aircraft tutorial but nothing found. Anyone knows where to find it?

I got started in maya 4 days ago.

Thanks for helping.

Great work posted here guys!

-( Definition of newbie: me (first post in CGtalk, new to 3D and using Blender 2.34) )-

Anyway here goes my fantasy Schneider-Style racing floatplane.
A couple of days working on model and a simple scene to test it. Still very much a WIP, needs textures, spec maps and such, and a proper scene. Be back soon...:)
