View Full Version : hard edged shadow alomg terminator

I'm just starting to rendering my images with shadows (for the first time) and I've been mucking with the raytraced shadow settings and getting nowhere.

My problem is a hard edged shadow that follows the faces of my poly character along the terminator of the object (the transition from the light side to the shaded side). The shading is generally smoothly graduated from one side to the other except that there's this darker shadow super imposed over it. It doesn't show up until I turn on raytracing (I've got some reflections in the scene and I can't figure out how to get soft edged shadows with dmaps). The character has been smoothed and I've made sure the normals are smoothed as well. It isn't a reflection. I've played around with the global raytrace settings and the light's raytrace shadow settings without any success. I've also tried all the different kinds of lights. I also don't want to smooth it any more than it already is.

I'd be mighty grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Paul B
