View Full Version : Question: Shaders.
Nichod 08-27-2006, 06:44 PM Being as its an irritating hassle to get Messiah to run on my computer with my oh so wonderful ATI graphics card, I'm asking rather than installing and looking myself. (new computer soon) So I hope you all don't mind:)
While I like Thomas's new shaders I'm curious what by default Messiah comes with. IE. How far can I go with what is included? Procedurally.

I think to answer that. . . you'd just have to try it for yourself. I find it a joy to use. Especially since I can very easily integrate a vast library of shaders from Darksim's Darktree and the plugins you can get for that. I mean . . . have a look at the plugins this guy has made for it. . .

I'd love to see us be able to control the angle and curve of a displacement. . . I'd love fur etc. But what is there now is pretty damn amazing.

Included are good basics, some freaky specials (like the Doll Eyes Eye shader) and a bunch of not so useful things. But you really have to try them since nobody else knows what you need. It isn't as complete as f.i. Lightwave.
The Darktree shaders are very good, but you can only use and tweak some parameters of the (very good) presets. Otherwise you have to buy the standalone Darktree app to create your own presets.
I personally don't like to have an external shader tree in addition to the internal one, but it is known for being very good and easy to use.
Wegg uses Darktree for his commercials (see the cool cactus) and it works in many other apps too, so it is the only way of transferring procedurals between apps.
My AoN: Studio Procedurals and the TLHPro Helpers on the other hand are fully integrated into the rendertree of messiah and use all the things available there. People so far like them a lot and I made them as easy to use and logical as I could.
I am 100% need-driven when programing and so the shaders reflect what I need for working with a renderer: good and flexible procedurals and tools that enable you to really use the node based renderer like RayType, EasyGlass, EasyMath and the Merger with 26 Photoshop-Layermodes...
It really boils down to taste and what you want to do. You may want to have a look at Darktree and the docs of my shaders...
But you really should test messiah first to find if you need anything else at all.
