View Full Version : How to get a painted look with compositing tricks

We're trying to achieve a painterly look in a 3d environment and I was wondering if there are any tricks you can pull off with compositing techniques. The programs we have to do such are motion- after effects- photoshop cs- and shake, and the look we're trying to get is here

haha, yeah, actually it does. I was trying to find some info about how they did that in what dreams may come, but figured it was something I wouldn't be able to pull off very well with 3d.
This helps. I was also looking at what they did with the short fairy berry. it's a tricky thing to try to pull off when you don't know anything about shaders :\

I don't think Fairy Berry has any kind of complex shading to be honest. The backgrounds are 2D, the characters have 2D painted textures (so no compositing FX) with rather large, rough painted features so they work pretty well from all angles, possibly combined with some cell shaded specularity. I like the play of shadows on the characters in the exterior shots, that adds to both the integration and the painterly feel.
It's good art, not nifty maths ;)

Haha, well, I'm hoping you're right and I'll be able to mimic it in a way that looks as good. :P
