So, no, not as original as Snakes on a Plane, but still.

Quicktime Video (4.5 Meg) (http://www.artofsullivan.com/videos/BatSequence04smallfile.mov)

This sequence is from the upcoming Indiana Jones fan film Treasure of the Templars. The footage was shot in a cave somewhere in Scotland and I'm adding the bats.

There are about 300 bats in each shot with 30 variations on wing flap speed, head size and ear size. Hopefully the swarm doesn't look too homogenious!

It takes nearly 20 minutes to load the scenes but working with the scene in LW9 is a joy, very nearly real time! http://www.spinquad.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Each frame renders in just about five minutes, so with my baby render farm (6 nodes) its not too painful.

Once I nail down the swarm I'm going to add a few hero bats to harass her more aggressively, getting in her hair and what not!

C&C welcome.

Not knowing the story, they look a little too big, and are flying too slow. If I know my bat info the big guys are fruit bats and roost in big trees. The smaller one are usually in the caves.

I do like the fire light sss thru the wings.

watched again > size does make them a little more menacing.

The shot where shes looking up, the bats direction seem not random enough and too slow (at 13 or 14 secs, then does get a little better at 17 /18 secs), but the next shot where they are swirling looks great.

anyway good job

I wish I could watch it, because I have an assignment where I need to make some bats, Are they modeled? How many polys are they? Since they move so fast and there are so many of them you would have to be strategic with their poly count wouldn't you?

Here's an image of the individual bat. They're only 586 polys each because like you said, with so many of them I had to keep the count low. I depend a lot on lighting and motion blur to make these shots work, so keeping the poly count low really lets me crank up those settings.
